Subsoil tillage boosts sorghum yield in saline-alkali soils by alleviating constraints on root growth through integrated soil improvement.

To enhance crop productivity in saline-alkali soils, it is essential to overcome soil constraints that limit root growth. This study used sorghum as the test crop and conducted a field experiment in the Hetao Irrigation District of Inner Mongolia to compare subsoiling tillage (ST) with conventional tillage (CT). We evaluated soil physical structure, salt transport, microbial activity, and root morphology, and applied multivariate statistics and structural equation modeling to elucidate the mechanisms through which ST promotes crop growth. ST significantly improved the root-zone soil environmen…

Optimizing soil conditioner selection based on acidification severity for fertility and yield enhancement in southern China's acid soils: A meta-analysis.

Soil acidification is one of the main limiting factors affecting agricultural development in southern China. The application of soil conditioners, including lime, biochar, and organic fertilizer, has proven effective in ameliorating acidic soils. However, comprehensive evaluation of the effects of these conditioners on soil acidity, fertility, and crop yield across southern China remains scarce. In this study, we collated 477 observations from 110 publications to explore the effects of conditioners on soil acidity and crop yields, considering the influence of various regulating factors. The re…

Biochar and Bioorganic Fertilizer Amendment Improved Soil Qualities and Altered Bacterial Communities in Quinoa Rhizosphere Soils of the Yellow River Delta.

The application of biochar and bioorganic fertilizer (BOF) in agricultural systems has garnered increasing attention in recent years. Nevertheless, research remains scarce on the impacts of biochar and BOF on the rhizosphere microecological characteristics of saline-alkali soils. This research involved the execution and analysis of 16S rRNA sequencing using Illumina technology to explore how biochar, whether used alone or in conjunction with BOF, along with varying application rates, impacts the microbial community in the saline-alkali rhizosphere soil during quinoa cultivation. In the conduct…

Spatial distribution and source identification of metal contaminants in soil and rice grain samples: a study on exploration of soil quality and risk assessment.

The present study aims to assess soil quality and potential health risks associated with soil pollution of the Batala region of Punjab, India. Physico-chemical parameters such as pH (6.69-7.43), electrical conductivity (0.17-0.33 mS/cm), and total organic carbon (1.01-5.94%) were observed to be within permissible limits. The maximum mean content (mg/kg) of heavy metals in soil was found as Fe (4060.93), Zn (444.33), Mn (278.5), Pb (23.16), Cu (21.78), Ni (20.16), Co (7.14), and Cd (1.85) which were below the prescribed limits but beyond the geochemical background limits of world soil. For rice…

Soil organic matter carbon chemistry signatures, hydrophobicity and humification index following land use change in temperate peat soils.

Peatlands play a critical role in the global carbon cycle, storing large amounts of carbon because of a net imbalance between primary production and the microbial decomposition of the organic matter. Nevertheless, peatlands have historically been drained for energy sources (e.g. peat briquettes), forestry, or agriculture - practices that could affect the quality of the soil organic matter (SOM) composition, hydrophobicity and humification index. This study compared the effect of land use change on the quality and composition of peatland organic material in Co-Offaly, Ireland. Specifically, dra…

Legume germination is delayed in dry soils and in sterile soils devoid of microbial mutualists: Species-specific implications for upward range expansions.

Climate change is affecting species and their mutualists and can lead to the weakening or loss of important interspecific interactions. Through independent shifts in partner phenology and distribution, climatic stress can separate mutualists temporally or spatially, leading to alterations in partner functional traits and fitness. Here, we explored the effects of the loss of microbial mutualists on legume germination success and phenology. In particular, we assessed the effects of mutualism loss via soil sterilization, increased drought, and introduction to novel soils found beyond the current …

Effects of ZnSO4 and Zn-EDTA broadcast or banded to soil on Zn bioavailability in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and Zn fractions in soil.

Human Zn deficiency is prevalent in developing countries, and staple grains are commonly bio-fortified to increase their Zn contents. We measured Zn content, distribution, and bioavailability in calcareous soil and in wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.) in Shaanxi Province, China, when either an organic Zn-ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Zn-EDTA) or an inorganic zinc sulfate heptahydrate (ZnSO4·7H2O) Zn source was banded below the seedbed or broadcasted into soil. Compared with ZnSO4·7H2O, Zn-EDTA fertilization produced higher Zn concentration and uptake in wheat plants. However, Zn bioavailabili…

Petroleum hydrocarbon biodegradation under seasonal freeze-thaw soil temperature regimes in contaminated soils from a sub-Arctic site.

Several studies have shown that biostimulation in ex situ systems such as landfarms and biopiles can facilitate remediation of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soils at sub-Arctic sites during summers when temperatures are above freezing. In this study, we examine the biodegradation of semivolatile (F2: C10-C16) and nonvolatile (F3: C16-C34) petroleum hydrocarbons and microbial respiration and population dynamics at post- and presummer temperatures ranging from -5 to 14 °C. The studies were conducted in pilot-scale tanks with soils obtained from a historically contaminated sub-Arctic site in…

Improved methodology for tracing a pulse of 13C-labelled tree photosynthate carbon to ectomycorrhizal roots, other soil biota and soil processes in the field.

Isotopic pulse-labelling of photosynthate allows tracing of carbon (C) from tree canopies to below-ground biota and calculations of its turnover in roots and recipient soil microorganisms. A high concentration of label is desirable but is difficult to achieve in field studies of intact ecosystem patches with trees. Moreover, root systems of trees overlap considerably in most forests, which requires a large labelled area to minimize the impact of C allocated below-ground by un-labelled trees. We describe a method which combines a high level of labelling at ambient concentrations of CO2, [CO2], …

Phyto- and bio-management of metal(loid)-contaminated soil by inoculating resistant bacteria: evaluating tolerance of treated rice plant and soil with its efficiency.

Anthropogenic activities are increasing the amount of heavy metals and metalloids in the environment on a global scale, harming all living things and necessitating the employment of bioremediation procedures. Metal-resistant bacteria were used to clean polluted soil and promote plant growth; this approach has gained attention in recent years for bioremediation of heavy metal-contaminated systems. We studied the effects of chromium and lithium in Oryza sativa under controlled conditions. In the present study, lithium concentration was applied 50 ppm to 200 ppm according to the dose tolerance le…

Combined apatite, biochar, and organic fertilizer application for heavy metal co-contaminated soil remediation reduces heavy metal transport and alters soil microbial community structure.

Soil amendments are used extensively to remediate soils contaminated with heavy metals. However, the effects of soil amendments on heavy metal bioavailability, plant yield, and bacterial community structure in tropical farmland soils remain largely unknown. In the present study, seaweed organic fertilizer (S), apatite (A), biochar (B), and seaweed organic fertilizer-apatite-biochar mixtures (SAB) were applied at different rates to assess their influence on cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and chromium (Cr) bioavailability in contaminated farmland soils, using different component ratios and doses in ma…

Developing global goals for soil health research and action: report on the "Soil Stars Heligan Summit," The Lost Gardens of Heligan, UK, March 2026.

Soil underpins food production, freshwater, carbon storage and biodiversity, yet over 40% of the world's soils are now degraded, eroding at rates up to 1000 times their formation rate. Microbial technologies have matured and can now aid soil recovery, but deployment has lagged due to absent shared targets, harmonized metrics, and coherent reward structures to mobilize solvers across academia, industry, philanthropy, and government. Building on major initiatives (e.g. A Soil Deal for Europe, the FAO Global Soil Partnership, etc.) a consensus has emerged on the need for actionable, transformativ…

Preparation and performance evaluation of a novel Tween 80-based microemulsion system for the remediation of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil using soil washing test.

Soil contamination by petroleum hydrocarbons represents a significant threat to environmental and ecological security. Due to their superior solubilization and emulsification capabilities, microemulsion systems have emerged as a highly promising remediation agent for petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soils. In this study, a microemulsion system was formulated with Tween 80 (surfactant), n-butanol (cosurfactant), and olive oil (oil phase). The phase behavior, key physicochemical properties, and soil remediation performance of the system were systematically investigated. The Shah titration meth…

Mercapto-based palygorskite modified soil micro-biology and reduced the uptake of heavy metals by Salvia miltiorrhiza in cadmium and lead co-contaminated soil.

Salvia miltiorrhiza is an important traditional Chinese medicinal and edible plant that can easily accumulate excessive cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) from contaminated soils. The soil contaminated with heavy metals severely threatened the quality of S. miltiorrhiza products. In this study, we investigated the effects of mercapto-based palygorskite (MPAL), a new passivation amendment, on restraining the uptake of Cd and Pb by S. miltiorrhiza, and the impact on soil micro-ecology. Results showed that the application of MPAL prominently enhanced the biomass and antioxidant enzyme activities of S. mi…

Nonlinear Responses and Decoupling Between Soil Organic Carbon Fractions and Extracellular Enzyme Activity Across Salt-Affected Soils of the Qiangtang Plateau.

Cold alpine salt-affected soils may retain carbon through mineral protection or suppressed microbial decomposition, but these processes remain difficult to distinguish. We measured soil physicochemical properties, four extracellular enzyme activities, soil organic carbon (SOC), and its dissolved (DOC), particulate (POC), and mineral-associated (MAOC) fractions across five soil types on the Qiangtang Plateau. Multivariate analyses and five XGBoost models interpreted using Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) characterized carbon-enzyme associations and identified leading predictors and nonlinea…
