Peripheral nerve stimulation synchronized with brain stimulation facilitates somatosensory function.

OBJECTIVES: We developed a peripherocentral synchronized stimulation (pcSS) system which enables peripheral nerve stimulation synchronized with transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). We investigated the neuromodulatory effects of pcSS to the median nerve and the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) on the somatosensory function and the excitability of the S1 in healthy humans by assessing the two point discrimination (TPD) test and somatosensory evoked potential (SEP). METHODS: Twenty adults participated in this study. tACS was delivered across the right S1. The frequency was indiv…

Attention-based modulation of tactile stimuli: a comparison between prefrontal lesion patients and healthy age-matched controls.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of the prefrontal cortex in attention-based modulation of cortical somatosensory processing. METHODS: Six prefrontal stroke patients were compared with eleven neurologically intact older adults during a vibrotactile discrimination task. All subjects attended to stimuli on one digit while ignoring distracter stimuli on a separate digit of the same hand. Subjects were required to report infrequent targets on the attended digit only. Throughout testing electroencephalography was used to measure event-related potentials for both task-relevant and irrelevant sti

[Tactile agnosia and dysfunction of the primary somatosensory area. Data of the study by somatosensory evoked potentials in patients with deficits of tactile object recognition].

The question as to whether a failure of recognition unrelated to impaired sensory processing or to disorder of naming can occur in the somat … otentials (SEPs) now offers the possibility of assessing non invasively the function of the primary somatosensory cortex (in particular area 3b). We have recorded SEPs to median nerve or finger stimulation in 309 subjects with a focal hemispheric lesion presenting with a somatosensory deficit of any type. We could confirm that asterognosis referable to impaired discri …

Safe surgery of lesions near the motor cortex using intra-operative mapping techniques: a report on 50 patients.

In 50 patients lesions located in or adjacent to the motor strip were microsurgically removed with the help of intra-operative electrophysiological mapping of the sensorimotor cortex. Mapping consisted of cortical stimulation and/or recording of somatosensory evoked potentials. Depending on the patient's pre-operative neurological status, surprisingly good results could be achieved: The surgery resulted in increased permanent sensorimotor deficit in only 4% of cases and in improved neurological status in 30% of cases. It is concluded that surgical removal of centrally located lesions using a m

Functional Connectivity of the Anterior Cingulate Cortex and the Right Anterior Insula Differentiates between Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder and Healthy Controls.

Background: This study aimed to explore possible differences of the whole-brain functional connectivity of the anterior cingulate cortex (AC … al superior frontal cortex. Conclusions: Considering the observed hyperconnectivity between the ACC/somatosensory cortex in the patient group, we suggest depression may be related to an impairment of the sensory-discriminative function of the SSC, which results in the phenomenological signature of mental pain in both MDD and BD. These findings suggest that future rese …

Somatosensory system in two types of motor reorganization in congenital hemiparesis: topography and function.

This study investigates the (re-)organization of somatosensory functions following early brain lesions. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), passive hand movement was studied. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) were used as complementary methods. fMRI data was analyzed on the first level with regard to topographical variability; second-level group effects as well as the overall integrity of the somatosensory circuitry were also assessed. Subjects with unilateral brain lesions occurring in the third trimester of pregnancy or perinatally with

Diversity among Purkinje cells in the monkey cerebellum.

A monoclonal antibody (B1) produced against rat embryonic forebrain membranes shows specific and striking immunohistochemical staining of Purkinje cells in the monkey cerebellum in a pattern of broad parasagittal alternating bands of cells either possessing or lacking the B1 antigen. In addition, the neurons of the deep cerebellar nuclei and some neurons of the motor cortex and of the spinal cord also contain the B1 antigen. Neurons with the B1 antigen were also seen in the somatosensory cortex, the vestibular and cochlear nuclei, and the retina.

The illusion is pr … the proprioceptive drift and an increased causal relationship from the parietal cortex to the right somatosensory cortex during a relatively late period (550-750 ms post-stimulus). These findings suggest a two-stage process in which (1) reduced influence from the medial frontal regions over the parietal areas unlocks the mechanisms that preserve body integrity, allowi …

Auditory thalamic reticular nucleus of the rat: anatomical nodes for modulation of auditory and cross-modal sensory processing in the loop connectivity between the cortex and thalamus.

The auditory sector of the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) plays a pivotal role in gain and/or gate control of auditory input relayed from the thalamus to cortex. The TRN is also likely involved in cross-modal sensory processing for attentional gating function. In the present study, we anatomically examined how cortical and thalamic afferents intersect in the auditory TRN with regard to these two functional pathways. Iontophoretic injections of biocytin into subregions of the auditory TRN, which were made with the guidance of electrophysiological recording of auditory response, resulted in re

Shared and divergent alteration of whole-brain connectivity and sensory deficits in multiple autism mouse models.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous developmental disconnection syndrome. Identifying circuit deficits is crucial for understanding ASD etiology, yet the involvement of multiple brain regions and genetic variations complicates this analysis. Here, using an AI-powered mapping platform, BM-auto (Brain Mapping with Auto-ROI correction), to analyze a Thy1-YFP reporter, we show that different ASD-associated mutations cause distinct circuit abnormalities but share common deficits in the piriform cortex, a region regulating olfactory discrimination and social behavior patterns. We analy

Modified areal cartography in auditory cortex following early- and late-onset deafness.

Cross-modal plasticity following peripheral sensory loss enables deprived cortex to provide enhanced abilities in remaining sensory systems. These functional adaptations have been demonstrated in cat auditory cortex following early-onset deafness in electrophysiological and psychophysical studies. However, little information is available concerning any accompanying structural compensations. To examine the influence of sound experience on areal cartography, auditory cytoarchitecture was examined in hearing cats, early-deaf cats, and cats with late-onset deafness. Cats were deafened shortly afte

Metabolic barrel representations with various patterns of neonatal whisker deafferentation in rats.

With various patterns of whisker deafferentation, C3 whisker stimulation produced divergently shaped metabolic barrel representations in layer IV of the primary somatosensory cortex. Whisker deafferentation results in functional and structural reorganization of the barrels in the primary somatosensory cortex. The present study examines the alteration of the metabolic barrel representations in layer IV with various configurations of selective whisker deafferentation in neonates, using [14C]2-deoxyglucose autoradiography. The deafferentation was produced by unilateral ablation of whiskers, leavi…
