The iron content in different parts of eight plants traditionally used to treat anaemia in Eastern Africa was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Extracts were made of plant samples using both wet and dry oxidation procedures. Results obtained from both procedures agree significantly and the average of both methods was taken as the iron content in each plant part. A technique for the noninvasive monitoring of cerebral oxygen status was evaluated on volunteer subjects on the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine centrifuge. The reaction of Fe(II) . bleomycin with O2 to yield Fe(III) . bleomycin has been resolved into two kinetic events by stopped-flow spectrophotometry. The first event is first order with respect to both bleomycin and O2 and may be regarded as a second order reaction (k = 6.1 x 10(3) M-1s-1 at 2 degrees C). The first product has no EPR spectrum. Water-sol core/shell CdSe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized in aqueous solution by using mercapto-acetate acid as stabilizer. The UV-Vis absorption and emission spectra were studied. The size of the SdSe-core was about 2 nm estimated by absorption edge and X-ray powder diffraction(XRD). The structure was also characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The intensity of luminescence of the quantum dots was greatly enhanced after the surface was modified with CdS shell. Red shift of the peak was shown in both the emission and absorption spectra.

The influence of aluminum ions introduced either directly or with sorbitol, in collagen and skin, has been investigated by Thermally Stimulated Current/TSC spectroscopy. The intramolecular mobility of collagen has been found to be significantly reduced by aluminum ions. The substitution of water molecules by aluminum ions on intramolecular hydrophilic sites is suggested to be responsible for this evolution. The presence of sorbitol minimizes this effect.
