Investigation of the Effects of Speech Signal Length on Vocal Disorder Sorting Done Via Dynamic Pattern Modeling.

OBJECTIVES: Development of a noninvasive method for separating different vocal fold diseases is an important issue concerning vocal analysis. Due to the time variations along a pathologic vocal signal, application of dynamic pattern modeling tools is expected to help in the detection of defects that occur in the speech production mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, the hidden Markov model, which is a state space model, is employed to sort some of the vocal diseases. Moreover, this research mainly investigates the effects of the processed vocal signal lengths on the mention

[The efficacy of tenoten for children in the treatment of motor and speech disorders in children with perinatal damage of the central nervous system].

AIM: To assess the therapeutic efficacy of tenoten for children in perinatal hypoxic CNS damage in children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 80 children (56 boys and 24 girls) between the ages of 3 and 3 years and 11 months with different variants (dysontogenetic or encephalopathic) of the effects on the perinatal nervous system. All children were divided into primary (n=50) and control (n=30) groups. Children of the primary group received a combination of conventional speech therapy methods with tenoten for children (1 tablet 3 times a day for 12 weeks). In the control group, childr

Atypical speech lateralization in adults with developmental coordination disorder demonstrated using functional transcranial Doppler ultrasound.

Research using clinical populations to explore the relationship between hemispheric speech lateralization and handedness has focused on individuals with speech and language disorders, such as dyslexia or specific language impairment (SLI). Such work reveals atypical patterns of cerebral lateralization and handedness in these groups compared to controls. There are few studies that examine this relationship in people with motor coordination impairments but without speech or reading deficits, which is a surprising omission given the prevalence of theories suggesting a common neural network underl

High risk of reading disability and speech sound disorder in rolandic epilepsy families: case-control study.

PURPOSE: Associations between rolandic epilepsy (RE) with reading disability (RD) and speech sound disorder (SSD) have not been tested in a controlled study. We conducted a case-control study to determine whether (1) RD and SSD odds are higher in RE probands than controls and (2) an RE proband predicts a family member with RD or SSD, hence suggesting a shared genetic etiology for RE, RD, and SSD. METHODS: Unmatched case-control study with 55 stringently defined RE cases, 150 controls in the same age range lacking a primary brain disorder diagnosis, and their siblings and parents. Odds ratios

Changes in function of the masticatory system from 7 to 10 years of age in relation to articulatory speech disorders.

The aim of the present study was to determine changes in function of the masticatory system in children with articulatory speech disorders and in the controls by re-examining a sample of 287 previously studied children from 7 to 10 years of age. Articulatory speech disorders were diagnosed by the same speech therapist during spontaneous speech and test words using the Remes Articulation Test. Mandibular movement capacity, occlusal interferences, slide between retruded and intercuspal positions, and signs and symptoms of the craniomandibular disorders (CMD) were recorded by a dentist. The follo…

Neural speech encoding in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: an exploratory study using frequency-following responses.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is associated with neurodevelopmental impairments, including listening difficulties not always explained by peripheral hearing loss, suggesting alterations at the level of neural auditory processing. The frequency-following response (FFR) provides an objective measure of neural speech encoding and may offer insight into auditory function in this population. METHODS: Twenty-five normal-hearing participants were included: 11 individuals with FASD and 14 controls. Speech-evoked FFRs were recorded using a 160 ms /da/ stimulus at 80 dB SPL with a

Deciphering the genetic basis of developmental language disorder in children without intellectual disability, autism or apraxia of speech.

BACKGROUND: Developmental language disorder (DLD) refers to children who present with language difficulties that are not due to a known biomedical condition or associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or intellectual disability (ID). The clinical heterogeneity of language disorders, the frequent presence of comorbidities, and the inconsistent terminology used over the years have impeded both research and clinical practice. Identifying sub-groups of children (i.e. DLD cases without childhood apraxia of speech (CAS)) with language difficulties is essential for elucidating the underlying ge

The Progression of Developmental Language Disorder Terminology: A Scoping Review of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Journals.

PURPOSE: A 2017 CATALISE project resulted in consensus on using the term "developmental language disorder" (DLD) to describe children with unexplained language impairment. Since then, it is unclear how researchers have identified DLD and implemented DLD terminology. The current study is a scoping review to better understand the implementation of DLD terminology. METHOD: We identified studies (N = 265) published in American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) journals between 2017 and 2024 that included individuals with communication difficulties in the area of language not secondary to

Preparedness of Speech Language Pathologists and Occupational Therapists to Treat Pediatric Feeding Disorder: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) is increasingly common and is often treated by speech language pathologists (SLPs) and occupational therapists (OTs) in the community setting. However, the preparedness of these disciplines to effectively address PFD is relatively unknown. METHODS: A national (US), online survey was disseminated to providers who assess and treat PFD. For the present analysis, the responses of SLPs (N = 418) and OTs (N = 195) related to their clinical background, educational background, post-graduate training, and self-rated clinical effectiveness were statistically

Occupational and speech therapists' perceptions of their role in dental care for children with autism spectrum disorder: A qualitative exploration.

BACKGROUND: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have challenges in home oral care, accessing a dentist and accepting dental treatment. Occupational therapists (OTs) and speech therapists (STs) are likely to be involved earlier in managing communication, behavioural and sensory processing issues. AIM: To determine perceived issues, barriers and potential solutions to dental care for children with ASD in Singapore from the perspective of OTs and STs. DESIGN: Semi-structured interviews and a focus group discussion involving OTs and STs who treat children with ASD were conducted. Audio

Speech disorder and vocal tremor in postural instability/gait difficulty and tremor dominant subtypes of Parkinson's disease.

Hypokinetic dysarthria is a multidimensional impairment affecting all main speech subsystems with variable patterns and severity across individual Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. We can thus assume that inter-individual abnormal speech patterns are related to the various clinical subtypes of PD with different prominent motor symptoms. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare speech disorder between patients with the postural instability/gait difficulty (PIGD) and tremor-dominant (TD) motor phenotypes of PD. Speech samples were acquired from a total of 63 participants, including

Other-initiations of repair by children with developmental language disorder in speech-language therapy and non-institutional play.

This study explores the use of other-initiations of repair by children with developmental language disorder (DLD). The data are children's video-recorded language assessment sessions, speech-language therapy sessions and two kinds of non-institutional play sessions, parent-child and peer play. The videotapes were transcribed following CA conventions focusing on speech and relevant embodied actions. Other-initiations of repair were identified, collected and analyzed. The analysis focuses on open requests and candidate understandings which were the two most common types of other-initiation of re

A false sense of security: safety behaviors erode objective speech performance in individuals with social anxiety disorder.

In the current study, 55 participants with a diagnosis of generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD), 23 participants with a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder other than SAD with no comorbid SAD, and 50 healthy controls completed a speech task as well as self-reported measures of safety behavior use. Speeches were videotaped and coded for global and specific indicators of performance by two raters who were blind to participants' diagnostic status. Results suggested that the objective performance of people with SAD was poorer than that of both control groups, who did not differ from each other. M

Speech disturbs face scanning in 6-month-old infants who develop autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: From birth, infants show a preference for the faces, gaze, and voices of others. In individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) these biases seem to be disturbed. The source of these disturbances is not well-understood, but recent efforts have shown that the spontaneous deployment of attention to social targets might be atypical as early as 6 months of age. The nature of this atypical behavior and the conditions under which it arises are currently unknown. METHODS: We used eye-tracking to examine the gaze patterns of 6-month-old infants (n = 99) at high risk (n = 57) and low

Motor sequencing deficit as an endophenotype of speech sound disorder: a genome-wide linkage analysis in a multigenerational family.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this pilot study was to investigate a measure of motor sequencing deficit as a potential endophenotype of speech sound disorder (SSD) in a multigenerational family with evidence of familial SSD. METHODS: In a multigenerational family with evidence of a familial motor-based SSD, affectation status and a measure of motor sequencing during oral motor testing were obtained. To further investigate the role of motor sequencing as an endophenotype for genetic studies, parametric and nonparametric linkage analyses were carried out using a genome-wide panel of 404 microsatellite

Becoming the center of attention in social anxiety disorder: startle reactivity to a virtual audience during speech anticipation.

OBJECTIVE: A detailed understanding of how individuals diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD) respond physiologically under social-evaluative threat is lacking. Our aim was to isolate the specific components of public speaking that trigger fear in vulnerable individuals and best discriminate between SAD and healthy individuals. METHOD: Sixteen individuals diagnosed with SAD (DSM-IV-TR criteria) and 16 healthy individuals were enrolled in the study from December 2005 to March 2008. Subjects were asked to prepare and deliver a short speech in a virtual reality (VR) environment. The VR env
