Splenic rupture and intracranial haemorrhage are life-threatening conditions infrequently encountered in neonates without history of birth trauma. External manifestations of birth trauma; namely, capput succadeneum and cephalhematoma, when present raise suspicions for more serious intracranial or visceral damage. Rupture of normal spleen without an obvious source of trauma in haemophilic neonate is a rare event. The concurrence of both conditions and the unusual presentation make this case a rare one that is seldom encountered in the literature. Additionally, when splenic rupture occurs, the c…

Spontaneous splenic rupture is a life-threatening disease and an important differential diagnosis of acute abdomen. Early clinical diagnosis and rapid intervention is required to ensure patient survival. Spontaneous splenic rupture may be induced by hematological, inflammatory or infiltrative diseases affecting the spleen. Splenomegaly may also significantly increase the risk of rupture. Other contributory factors include male, adulthood, rapid growth of the spleen and splenic abscess. Here, we present the case of a 69-year-old man who was undergoing chemotherapy for B-cell chronic lymphoid le…

In many parts of the world malaria still is a major medical problem. Heavy international and transcontinental traveling carries malaria to non-endemic areas. Practicing physicians must be aware of the common, but also the rare and severe complications of malaria. During malaria changes in splenic structure can result in asymptomatic enlargement or complications such as hematoma formation, rupture, hypersplenism, ectopic spleen, torsion, or cyst formation. An abnormal immunological response may result in massive splenic enlargement. Spontaneous rupture of the spleen is an important and life thr

Spontaneous rupture of the spleen is a rare complication of hematological malignancies, occurring most commonly in patients with acute leukemia, but it has been documented in chronic leukemias and also in lymphomas. We report two patients with histologically and immunohistochemically confirmed mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) who experienced a spontaneous splenic rupture. An 80-year-old woman and a 51-year-old man had a blastoid variant of MCL and responded poorly to conventional treatment. Both patients recovered after splenectomy. The woman died of progressive lymphoma 2 months later. An allogenei…

Background: Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is a technique aimed at temporarily interrupting or limiting blood flow through the aorta, which may be used as a bridge until definitive bleeding control by endovascular procedures or surgery. Despite the main current indication for its use is traumatic massive noncompressible torso hemorrhage, its application in end-stage nontraumatic abdominal and pelvic hemorrhage is progressively increasing. Case Presentation: A 42 year-old male patient was brought to our hospital Emergency Department with acute onset of abdomin

INTRODUCTION: Splenic abscess is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition that can rupture, leading to pneumoperitoneum and symptoms that mimic gastrointestinal perforation in rare cases. This can significantly complicate accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment. A splenic abscess can become life-threatening by rupturing, which may cause diffuse peritonitis or sepsis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old man with uncontrolled diabetes presented with fever, chills, and abdominal pain. Initial evaluation at a previous hospital, including computed tomography (CT), suggested a lower gastroint

Atraumatic splenic rupture (ASR) is a rare condition mostly associated with neoplastic, infectious, and inflammatory diseases. ASR associated with drug treatment is even rarer. In this case report, we highlight an unusual complication of the direct oral anticoagulant rivaroxaban. A 64-year-old male patient was admitted to the emergency department with complaints of faintness and diffuse abdominal cramps. The patient had no history of recent trauma. Clinical examination revealed hemodynamic instability with a moderate response to filling and mild abdominal discomfort on palpation. His medical h…

Splenic injury is usually caused by blunt trauma to the abdomen. Very rarely, spontaneous rupture can occur in patients with splenomegaly due to various underlying pathological conditions such as hematological, neoplastic, inflammatory, and infectious diseases. Here, we report the case of a 48-year-old gentleman who presented to the emergency department with sudden-onset pain in the abdomen and hypotension. Blood investigation revealed anemia and leukocytosis with blast cells on peripheral smear, suggestive of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in the chronic phase. Contrast-enhanced computed tomo

Hemosuccus pancreatitis is a rare and potentially fatal cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding characterized by hemorrhage from the ampulla of Vater via the pancreatic duct. In this case, a patient with chronic pancreatitis on a background of chronic alcoholism is found to have a splenic artery pseudoaneurysm that was bleeding into the pancreatic duct. This was identified on contrast-enhanced computed tomography imaging and successfully managed via microcoil embolization.

INTRODUCTION: The reported prevalence of a SAA varies between 0.01 and 10.4% [1], and since SAAs often remain asymptomatic, the true prevalence is uncertain. The reported SAAs occur more frequently in younger patients, with 58% diagnosed in women of childbearing age; 95% of these are diagnosed during pregnancy.

A pathologic splenic rupture refers to a rupture without trauma. A splenic rupture as the initial manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia is extremely rare. In this study, we described a rare case of acute myeloid leukemia presenting principally as an acute abdomen due to a pathologic splenic rupture in a 35-year old male patient. We can assert that a pathologic splenic rupture in hematologic diseases is a potentially life-threatening complication, which necessitates immediate operative intervention. Any such patient complaining about left upper abdominal tenderness should be closely observed,…

Niemann-Pick disease (NPD) is an inherited metabolic disorder, which has been classified into types A, B, C, and D. Niemann-Pick disease rarely causes spontaneous splenic rupture: to our knowledge, only four such cases have ever been reported. We report the case of a 53-year-old man with NPD manifesting as spontaneous splenic rupture. Ultrasound showed a ruptured large spleen with hemoperitoneum, and he underwent emergency splenectomy. Histopathological examination confirmed that there were numerous accumulated "Pick cells," defined as foamy histiocytes, in the spleen.

A 39-year-old woman presented with a ruptured aneurysm of the splenic artery. The postoperative course was complicated by poor wound healing. This, in combination with a history of easy bruising and joint hypermobility, made us consider a connective tissue disease as underlying cause. The vascular type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome was diagnosed by identifying collagen III deficiency and the corresponding gene mutation in cultured fibroblasts from a skin biopsy.

We report a patient, 33 weeks pregnant with twins, who sustained a ruptured splenic artery aneurysm. This presented with left sided chest pain, breathlessness, low oxygen saturations and electrocardiogram (ECG) changes supportive of a diagnosis of massive pulmonary embolus. The diagnosis of splenic artery rupture was made at emergency Caesarean section performed for fetal distress.

Peritonitis can result from many causes. We report a case caused by a renal abscess which contaminated the abdominal cavity. A 30-year-old patient was referred with suspected ruptured ectopic pregnancy with signs of peritoneal flooding. The culdocentesis was positive and returned frank pus. Endoscopic exploration with an open laparoscope revealed that the infection did not originate from a gynecological infection but did not identify the exact origin. Laparotomy was performed and revealed a splenic abscess and a subphrenic peritoneal breach releasing a purulent liquid. Splenectomy and abdomina
