Repurposing of yunnan baiyao as an alternative therapy for minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

The study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of an herbal extract of Yunnan Baiyao formulated in toothpaste as an alternative therapy for minor RAS. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial (from March 2010 to March 2011) was conducted on a cohort of 227 minor RAS patients. The toothpaste containing Yunnan Baiyao was used twice daily as part of the patient's routine oral hygiene for 5 days. An assessment of ulcerative size and pain was recorded on day 0 (baseline), day 3, and day 5. Any noted adverse reactions were recorded. All data were analyzed using the S

Homocysteine levels in patients with Behçet's disease and patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

The mechanism for vascular involvement of Behçet disease (BD) includes arterial and venous thrombosis. Although the exact etiology of systemic vasculitis and thrombosis is still unknown, many hypotheses have been suggested. One of these hypotheses is that hyperhomocysteinemia causes vascular disease and thrombosis. The aim of this study was to compare the levels of homocysteine, vitamin B(12), and folic acid of BD patients with those of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) patients and healthy controls. Forty-five BD patients, 47 RAS patients, and 69 healty control subjects were included in thi…

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor of the maxilla with ulcerative stomatitis: a case report.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare benign odontogenic tumor, known as Pindborg tumor. Although ulcer formation was reported in one previously involving the peripheral maxilla, such change of the overlying mucosa has been reported in intraosseous CEOT. We report maxillary CEOT in a patient who complained of spontaneous pain due to extensive ulcer formation of the oral mucosa.

Experimental vesicular stomatitis in swine: effects of route of inoculation and steroid treatment.

An enzootic focus of vesicular stomatitis virus New Jersey serotype (VSV-NJ) exists on Ossabaw Island, Georgia. Many questions regarding the epizootiology of this virus at this focus still exist, but evidence suggests that the vector for this virus is a phlebotomine sand fly (Lutzomyia shannoni), with feral swine serving as a potential source of virus for the sand fly and for other swine via contact transmission. We conducted 2 experimental trials in domestic swine using VSV-NJ isolated from a sand fly from Ossabaw Island to determine if route of inoculation or immunosuppression via steroid ad…

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis. A study of the clinical characteristics of lesions in 93 cases.

We studied the clinical characteristics of 93 patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS); 66 corresponded to minor aphthae (MiRAS), 20 to major aphthae (MaRAS), and 7 to herpes-like ulcerations (HU). MiRAS was seen to present the lowest rate of recurrences, as well as the shortest duration and the fewest lesions per episode. In turn, MaRAS presented the longest duration per recurrence, along with a number of lesions and recurrences that was lower than in HU but greater than in cases of MiRAS. Finally, HU developed the greatest number of lesions and recurrences. When we classified RAS ac…

The effects of relaxation/imagery training on recurrent aphthous stomatitis: a preliminary study.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common diseases of the oral mucosa. Although etiology remains unknown, immunological and emotional disturbances have been implicated in the pathogenesis of RAS. No consistently effective therapeutic regimen has been found. The present study investigates the voluntary modulation of RAS employing hypnosis-like relaxation/imagery training procedures. A multiple baseline design was used to evaluate change in frequency of ulcer recurrence. The role of psychological distress, ratings of perceived pain, and hypnotizability in the treatment of RAS…

Coinfection with a rhabdovirus: vesicular stomatitis virus of Indiana and New-Jersey serotypes.

Coinfection of cells with vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) of Indiana and New-Jersey serotypes were performed. Thermosensitive mutants (ts) of VSV Indiana and the wild type strain (+) of New-Jersey were used. Harvests and titrations were made at permissive(PT) and nonpermissive (NPT) temperatures. It was shown that the harvest was mainly composed of one parental-like infectious particles. The dominance of one serotype over the other was shown to be a function of the relative multiplicity of the two viruses; the presence of a thermosensitive lesion imparts a disadvantage to the corresponding se…

[Appearance of entodermal antigen in the mouth mucosa of dogs in recurrent spontaneous stomatitis].

An additional component absent in the same areas of the mouth under normal conditions appeared in dogs with spontaneous stomatitis in the ectodermal derivatives (mucosa of the cheeks, tongue and the hard palate). This component proved to be fully identical to the antigens of the mucosa of the soft palate, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, which were entodermal derivatives. No entodermal antigen was revealed in the other organs and tissues under study.

Salivary Protein Profile in Patients with Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis: A Pilot Proteomic Study.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common ulcerative disorder of the oral cavity, although its etiology is still unknown. The present study aimed to identify the proteomic profile associated with the RAS inflammatory process, thereby enhancing our understanding of its etiopathogenesis. We compared salivary protein profiles of RAS patients during an active episode of oral ulceration (30 patients, mean age 36.9) to those from healthy donors without a history of RAS (30 healthy subjects, mean age 37.9). Using 2D-electrophoresis and mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) analysis, we identifie…

Acute-onset stomatitis in a young European woman visiting Brazil: a case report.

We report a case of acute, severe stomatitis in a 20-year-old European woman shortly after her arrival in Brazil following participation in a multi-day carnival. The clinical picture was consistent with either primary herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection or herpangina caused by enteroviruses. Due to the absence of virological testing, a definitive diagnosis was not established. Empirical treatment with corticosteroids and antibiotics was initiated, while antiviral therapy was omitted. The patient's symptoms progressed significantly before resolving with supportive care within ten days…

Systemic and local effect of oxidative stress on recurrent aphthous stomatitis: systematic review.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory disease of the mouth. It is characterised by the appearance of painful ulcers in the oral mucosa. RAS is believed to be a multifactorial disease with genetic predisposition, environmental factors and alterations in the immune system. Oxidative stress, caused by an imbalance between free radicals and the antioxidant system, also appears to be involved in the pathogenesis of RAS. Several risk factors, such as smoking, iron and vitamin deficiency and anxiety, may contribute to the development of the disease. Understanding…

Aphthous stomatitis - computational biology suggests external biotic stimulus and immunogenic cell death involved.

BACKGROUND: The exact cause of recurrent aphthous stomatitis is still unknown, making it a challenge to develop effective treatments. This study employs computational biology to investigate the molecular basis of recurrent aphthous stomatitis, aiming to identify the nature of the stimuli triggering these ulcers and the type of cell death involved. METHODS: To understand the molecular underpinnings of recurrent aphthous stomatitis, we used the Génie tool for gene identification, targeting those associated with cell death in recurrent aphthous stomatitis. The ToppGene Suite was employed for fun…

SIRT1 Modulates the Sensitivity of Prostate Cancer Cells to Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Oncolysis.

Oncolytic virotherapy represents a promising experimental anticancer strategy, based on the use of genetically modified viruses to selectively infect and kill cancer cells. Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) is a prototypic oncolytic virus (OV) that induces cancer cell death through activation of the apoptotic pathway, although intrinsic resistance to oncolysis is found in some cell lines and many primary tumors, as a consequence of residual innate immunity to the virus. In the effort to improve OV therapeutic efficacy, we previously demonstrated that different agents, including histone deacetyl…
