Long-term results of low dose intramuscular streptomycin for Menière's disease.

The initial results of partial ablation of vestibular function are evident to control vertigo attacks and stabilize hearing as well as to reduce the severity of ataxia. The purpose of this study is to observe the long-term results of low dose intramuscular streptomycin in the treatment of bilateral Menière's disease. Eleven patients with disabling bilateral Menière's disease were treated with low doses of intramuscular streptomycin (20-40 g, mean = 25 g). Follow-up was 5-12 years (mean = 8 yr). All 11 patients achieved relief of their disabling vertigo. One patient had recurrent vertigo 1 year…

Resistance to penicillin-streptomycin synergy among clinical isolates of viridans streptococci.

Viridans streptococci are thought to be highly susceptible to penicillin and streptomycin. We recently encountered a unique group of 15 isolates from South Africa epidemiologically related to the isolation of penicillin-resistant pneumococci. These organisms were highly resistant to penicillin (PCN) (minimal inhibitory concentration, 1 to 32 micrograms/ml) and streptomycin (SM) (minimal inhibitory concentration, greater than or equal to 2,000 micrograms/ml). Two additional organisms with high-level streptomycin resistance were identified when 168 clinical isolates from Boston were screened. Ti…

Deficiency in ribosome biogenesis causes streptomycin resistance and impairs motility in Salmonella.

The ribosome is the central hub for protein synthesis and the target of many antibiotics. Whereas the majority of ribosome-targeting antibio … idelity. In this work, we analyzed Salmonella mutants evolved in the presence of the aminoglycoside streptomycin (Str) and identified a novel gene rimP to be involved in Str resistance. RimP is a ribosome assembly factor critical for the maturation of the 30S small subunit that binds Str. Deficiency in RimP increases resistance against Str and facilitates the …

A novel mechanism of streptomycin resistance in Yersinia pestis: Mutation in the rpsL gene.

Streptomycin is considered to be one of the effective antibiotics for the treatment of plague. In order to investigate the streptomycin resistance of Y. pestis in China, we evaluated streptomycin susceptibility of 536 Y. pestis strains in China in vitro using the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and screened streptomycin resistance-associated genes (strA and strB) by PCR method. A clinical Y. pestis isolate (S19960127) exhibited high-level resistance to streptomycin (the MIC was 4,096 mg/L). The strain (biovar antiqua) was isolated from a pneumonic plague outbreak in 1996 in Tibet Autono…

Role of local streptomycin in prevention of surgical site infection in TB spine.

PURPOSE: Surgical site infection (SSI) continues to be one of the most common post-operative complications in most spine surgeries. Patients with tuberculosis (TB) of spine are more at risk of developing this complication due to a number of reasons. This adds to significant morbidity and economic burden on patients adversely affecting the mental status and quality of life of patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of local streptomycin in preventing SSI in patients undergoing surgical management of spinal TB. METHODS: In total, 56 patients who underwent surgical management…

Transferable plasmid-mediated resistance to streptomycin in a clinical isolate of Yersinia pestis.

Plasmid-mediated high-level resistance to multiple antibiotics was reported in a clinical isolate of Yersinia pestis in Madagascar in 1997. We describe a second Y. pestis strain with high-level resistance to streptomycin, isolated from a human case of bubonic plague in Madagascar. The resistance determinants were carried by a self-transferable plasmid that could conjugate at high frequencies to other Y. pestis isolates. The plasmid and the host bacterium were different from those previously associated with multiple-drug resistance, indicating that acquisition of resistance plasmids is occurrin…

Effect of streptomycin administration on association of enteric pathogens with cecal tissue of mice.

The effect of streptomycin on the ability of Shigella sonnei 3SR and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli 2SR to associate with cecal tissue of mice in vivo and in vitro was examined. After orogastric challenge, both pathogens associated in significantly greater numbers (P less than or equal to 0.05) with the cecal tissue of streptomycin-treated mice than with the tissue of untreated mice. The population levels of the pathogens were also significantly greater (P less than or equal to 0.05) in the cecal contents of streptomycin-treated mice than in untreated mice. When excised cecal tissues from th…

The classic. Streptomycin in tuberculous bone and joint lesions with mixed infection and sinuses.

At the present time, streptomycin represents a tremendous advance in the treatment of patients with these lesions. Streptomycin undoubtedly will be improved upon and superseded by some other agent in the future, giving us better control of this disease and possibly enabling us to eradicate it. In closed lesions streptomycin, in dosages of 90 grams in a period of 90 days, has failed to arrest the tuberculous process permanently. Failure of treatment with streptomycin suggests strongly the presence of a sequestrum, a thick-walled abscess, or inadequate surgery. Healing seems to be related to the…

In vitro activity of ampicillin or vancomycin combined with gentamicin or streptomycin against enterococci.

Minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations of four antibiotics and their combinations were determined for 38 strains of enterococci by a microtitration tube dilution technique. The drugs were ampicillin, vancomycin, gentamicin, and streptomycin; the combinations were ampicillin-gentamicin, ampicillin-streptomycin, vancomycin-gentamicin, and vancomycin-streptomycin. At achievable serum concentrations, ampicillin alone killed 60% of strains, whereas combination with streptomycin increased this to 90% and with gentamicin to 100%. Vancomycin alone showed striking inhibitory activity, but v…
