Pure motor stroke is the commonest lacunar syndrome, but it may be associated with nonlacunar mechanisms of infarction. Stroke is a common but under recognized complication of neurocysticercosis (NCC). We report six patients having NCC who presented with stroke. All patients were young with no vascular risk factors. The arteritis which resulted in ischaemic infarct in these patients was related to the presence and severity of arachnoiditis. All patients responded well to steroids and albendazole therapy with minimal residual deficit.

We review the mitochondrial diseases in which cerebrovascular changes are seen, such as the MERRF syndrome (myoclonic epilepsy and ragged red fibers) or the Kearns-Sayre syndrome (progressive external ophthalmoplegia, retinitis pigmentaria, cerebellar disorders and disorders of cardiac conduction), focusing on the syndrome involving mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS). We consider the different clinical aspects, diagnostic methods, pathophysiological mechanisms of the cerebrovascular involvement as well as therapeutic approaches.

OBJECTIVE: Ischemic stroke in children and infants is a rare condition. We present a series of 23 pediatric patients of ischemic stroke.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective series of 23 patients, aged between 1 month and 13 years, diagnosed by anamnesis, clinical examination and neuroimaging. The clinical picture, neuroimaging findings, etiology, evolution and sequelae are evaluated.

Rehabilitation is an educational problem-solving process that focuses on disability and aims to minimize the patient's disability and distress and the stress on family members. There is established evidence that rehabilitation helps individual patients, and now there is good evidence that applying rehabilitation policies generally improves outcome in groups of patients. Moreover, well-organized specialist rehabilitation is efficient because total resources are reduced.

The limited effectiveness of any therapy for acute stroke dictates that emphasis be placed on strategies for preventing stroke. The identification and management of risk factors is paramount.
