Wavefront sensing and the dynamics of tear film.

PURPOSE: To summarize our previous studies regarding the influence of tear-film dynamics on optical quality after blinking. METHODS: Sequential higher-order aberration (HOA) measurements were performed by using a wavefront sensor. During the measurements, subjects were asked to blink every 10 seconds. The obtained aberration data were analyzed in the central 4-mm diameter for coma-like, spherical-like, and total HOAs up to the sixth-order Zernike polynomials. RESULTS: Serial measurements of HOAs in healthy eyes showed variations even in clinically normal subjects and were classified into 4 g

Effects of graft densities and chain lengths on separation of bioactive compounds by nanolayered thermoresponsive polymer brush surfaces.

We have prepared various poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PIPAAm)-grafted silica bead surfaces through surface-initiated atom transfer radical p … by simply changing the ATRP reaction time at constant catalyst concentration. The thermoresponsive surface properties of the PIPAAm-grafted silica beads were investigated by temperature-dependent elution behavior of hydrophobic steroids from the surfaces using Milli-Q water as a mobile phase. On the surfaces grafted with shorter PIPAAm chains, longer retention time …

Particle transport in unsaturated fractured chalk under arid conditions.

A series of field and laboratory experiments were conducted to study the mechanisms of particle detachment and transport from fractures in vadose chalk. Experiments of intermittent flow events along fracture surfaces were carried out in the laboratory. In the field, water was percolated from land surface via a discrete fracture into a compartmental sampler installed inside a horizontal corehole located I m below the surface. The mass, size distribution, and composition of the particles drained from the fracture voids were examined along with flow rates and salt dissolution. Two boreholes penet

Ketoimino groups as silica surface modifiers.

The presented work is devoted to Porasil C silica, with organic compounds bonded to its surface and capable of electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interactions. These packings are a good base for studying interactions among stationary phases and the adsorbate molecules showing electron-donor properties. The presented work concentrates on the phases containing ketoimino groups at their surface. Copper and chromium chlorides were bonded through these to the surface. Physicochemical characteristics of the obtained packings were determined by the use of elemental analysis, differential scanning calorime

Characterisation by drop tensiometry and by ellipsometry of the adsorption layer formed at the air/champagne wine interface.

A foam ring composed of small bubbles on the surface of a champagne glass is one of its hallmarks. The equilibrium state of that ring is lin … ously observed, we have chosen to evaluate the effect of this fraction of the wine molecules on its surface properties. Thus, wines were ultrafiltrated on a membrane with a 10000 molecular mass cut-off. The ultrafiltrate (UF) does not show any decrease of its surface tension over a 20-min period while the ultraconcentrate (UC) has a kinetics similar to that of unfil …

Graft-then-Shrink Polymer Coatings for Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Active Interfaces.

Increasing the polymer content on biosensors is important to improve sensor function by altering surface properties and increasing the number of capture sites for analytes. Grafting-to methods are often employed but may be limited by insufficient polymer immobilization. Herein, we have utilized Graft-then-Shrink (GtS) to simultaneously increase polymer content on grafting-to surfaces and produce low-cost, local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) Au biosensors. The biosensors were incorporated within microwell plates, where the translocation of materials across biological barriers can be tracked …

Trichinella antigens: a review.

This paper presents a review of the Trichinella antigens within the context of species variation. As with other parasites, Trichinella antigens can be classified according to their localisation as surface, excretory/secretory (ES) and somatic components. Surface antigens are mainly constituents of the outer cuticle although secretions from inner parts of the body wall as well as from the oesophagus can temporarily accumulate in the surface. ES antigens come mainly from the excretory granules of the stichosome, whereas somatic constitutive antigens come from the internal parts of the worms. ES

Ultrasound-Regulated Molecular Reorganization and Property Enhancement in Gelatin-Glycerol Films.

The replacement of petroleum-based plastics with sustainable and biodegradable materials remains a critical challenge for food packaging and biomedical applications. Gelatin is an attractive natural biopolymer for film fabrication; however, its inherent brittleness, moisture sensitivity, and limited structural stability restrict practical use. In this work, for the first time, low-power direct-probe ultrasonication is introduced as a green and additive-free strategy to regulate molecular organization and enhance the performance of gelatin-glycerol composite films. Systematic variation in ultra

Roughness-dependent exploration strategies regulate barnacle cyprid settlement on titanium surfaces.

The widespread use of titanium in marine structures is hindered by its susceptibility to biofouling. As a promising antifouling approach, the rational design of direct surface modification relies on a fundamental understanding of how surface properties regulate the settlement of fouling organisms. Herein, this study investigated the effect of TA2 titanium surface roughness on the settlement process of barnacle cyprids. Increased roughness enhanced the temporary attachment of cyprids through sacrificial bonds and mechanical interlocking of deposited footprint proteins. A moderate roughness incr…

Ultrasensitive Visual Detection of Chitin Degradation via Surface Pitting on a Nanofibrous N-Acetylchitosan Hydrogel.

Microbial enzymes play a central role in biomass valorization, and their discovery and characterization are increasingly driven by data-driven molecular approaches. However, for enzymes acting on water-insoluble polymeric substrates, enzymatic reactions are inherently confined to solid-liquid interfaces, and interfacial properties critically govern reaction efficiency and detectability. Here, we report an interfacial sensing strategy that enables ultrasensitive visual detection of microbial chitinolytic activity by exploiting a nanofibrous N-acetylchitosan hydrogel. The hydrogel consists of an

Study on electrochemical corrosion behavior of gray cast iron processed via laser cavitation peening.

Laser cavitation peening (LCP) is a novel material surface treatment method. In this study, we investigated the electrochemical corrosion performance of LCP-treated HT250 gray cast iron, with and without a coverage layer, under various laser energies, defocusing amounts, and immersion times. In the LCP process, a 0.04 mm aluminum coverage layer was employed. The influence of the coverage layer on LCP processing was analyzed. The results show that the presence of a coverage layer during the LCP treatment improves the specimen's anti-corrosion ability, with this alignment corresponding with an i

Redefining Fibrinogen Self-Assembly at the Air-Water Interface: An Intriguing Story with Multiple Layers.

Layer-by-layer self-assembled structures of the blood-clotting glycoprotein fibrinogen have been resolved at a fluid interface using neutron reflectometry and complementary techniques to reveal an unexpected mechanism that contradicts a long-established adsorption model. The widely accepted monolayer tilt model, inferred over two decades ago from ellipsometry data, involves progressive tilting of a monolayer of fibrinogen molecules from parallel with the interface with increasing interfacial coverage until, at saturation, the molecules adopt a more vertical conformation. Our new structural fra

Plastic movement in variably saturated porous media: The role of ionic strength and surface roughness.

We investigated colloid deposition mechanisms in saturated and unsaturated porous medias, focusing on roles of ionic strength (IS, 1-100 mM) and collector surface roughness. Through a customized column setup, experiments were conducted with smooth and rough (HF-etched) glass beads. Rough collectors featured fractal, multi-scale surface craters. Following colloid application, we evaluated released colloid via flushing with 0.4 mM NaHCO₃ solutions. Finally, column dissection was performed to quantify moderately and tightly attached colloids within the primary minimum. Increasing IS reduced mobil

Morphology-Engineered Pd-SnO2 Porous Networks for Enhanced Hydrogen Detection.

Hydrogen (H2) is a critical clean energy carrier, yet its flammability demands sensors that are both highly sensitive and selective. SnO2-based semiconductors show promise but typically suffer from poor selectivity, high operating temperatures, and complex fabrication methods. We report a simplified and reproducible two-step integration of flame spray pyrolysis (FSP)-derived SnO2 films with capillary-force-assisted drop-casting of 1 wt % Pd. This yields porous films with well-dispersed Pd that enhance catalytic activity and gas diffusion, while toluene-induced capillary forces promote nanopart

Preparation and characterization of cellulose nanofibrils via surface xanthation.

The growing demand for sustainable materials has driven the development of efficient, energy-saving methods for scalable nanocellulose production. This study presents the synthesis of xanthate-modified cellulose nanofibrils (XCNF) through a xanthate esterification process. Key parameters such as alkali concentration, carbon disulfide (CS2) dosage, and reaction time were optimized to evaluate their effect on the degree of substitution (DS). After xanthate groups were introduced under mild condition, low-energy mechanical fibrillation produced XCNF with high aspect ratios (up to 500) and stable

Bacterial Swimming and Accumulation on Endothelial Cell Surfaces.

Flagellar-driven locomotion plays a critical role in the bacterial attachment and colonization of surfaces, contributing to the risks of contamination and infection. Extensive efforts to uncover the underlying principles governing bacterial motility near surfaces have relied on idealized assumptions about surrounding artificial surfaces. However, in the context of living systems, the role of cells from tissues and organs becomes increasingly critical, particularly in bacterial swimming and adhesion, yet it remains poorly understood. Here, we propose using biological surfaces composed of vascul

Selective Modulation of Lipid Langmuir Monolayers by Methyl Dehydrodieugenol: Insights into Its Interaction with Compressibility-Modulating Lipid Interfaces for Antiprotozoal Applications.

This study investigates the interaction of methyl dehydrodieugenol (MDHDE) with model lipid monolayers to elucidate its potential as a membrane-targeting therapeutic agent. Langmuir monolayer experiments were conducted using dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC), dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE), and cholesterol to mimic the compressible and condensed states of protozoal and mammalian membranes. Surface pressure-area isotherms revealed that MDHDE reduced the molecular packing density of the lipids at biologically relevant surface pressures, suggesting attractive interactions at the molecul
