A novel surgical approach for feline stenotic nares: Bilateral wedge resection of the dorsal lateral nasal cartilage in seven cases.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical correction of stenotic nares, one component of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), is not referenced as often in cats as it is in dogs. Similar to dogs, stenotic nares emerge as a significant contributor in the development of BOAS in cats. In this study, we propose that stenotic nares in brachycephalic cats arise from an elongated dorsal lateral nasal cartilage. The aim of this paper is to illustrate a novel surgical technique to alleviate stenosis-associated clinical signs by performing full-thickness bilateral wedge resection of the excessive cartilage. Limited dorsal myeloschisis in three cats: a distinctive form of neural tube defect.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: The aim of this case series was to describe the clinical presentation, imaging findings and histopathology of three cats with limited dorsal myeloschisis (LDM). The history, examination and MRI sequences were reviewed in three cases presented to a single referral hospital. The surgery report and histopathology were described in two cases. All cats were young (10 weeks old, 5 months old, 4 years old), presenting with varying degrees of progressive paraparesis. All had a midline skin defect overlying the spinal column that was either sunken or saccular, containing fluid thou

Suspected Bartholin gland cystic-like structure and associated Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis in a 1-year-old Nigerian dwarf doe.

A 1-year-old intact Nigerian dwarf nulliparous doe was presented to the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, Large Animal Teaching Hospital in March 2024 for evaluation of recurrent perivulvar masses of 3 mo duration. Transcutaneous ultrasonographic examination of the labia and ventrolateral peri-vulvar area was carried out. This examination revealed a horizontally oriented, bilobed mass on the dorsal left labia majora, and a separate mass located directly below the ventral vulvar commissure. The dorsal mass was separated by a vertical septum, with the medial aspect of this mass e

Successful management of persistent tachycardia using esmolol in 2 dogs with septic shock.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the successful management of 2 dogs with septic shock and persistent tachycardia using norepinephrine and esmolol, a short-acting beta receptor antagonist. SERIES SUMMARY: Two cases are reviewed. In the first case, septic shock with ventricular tachycardia was diagnosed in a 4-year-old neutered female Great Dane that underwent jejunoileal resection and anastomosis for a partial mesenteric torsion. The patient's tachyarrhythmias failed to respond to lidocaine, and an esmolol infusion was used for heart rate control. The condition of the dog improved and she was discharge

Common feline problem behaviors: Destructive scratching.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: While scratching is a normal, beneficial behavior for cats, it can create problems when cats scratch objects owners deem as inappropriate. However, if veterinarians make suitable recommendations from the first veterinary visit, owners will be able to implement effective preventive strategies to develop good scratching patterns for life. Educating owners as to why cats scratch, how to guide cats to scratch only on desirable surfaces (ie, a scratching post), which types of scratching posts are preferred by most cats, the benefits of pheromone products, as well as other strat

Single stage urethroplasty for perineal hypospadias in a horse: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Within the veterinary world, data regarding the surgical management of hypospadias is lacking. Reports within equines have documented resective phallectomy procedures rather than urethral reconstruction. This case report documents the first ever urethroplasty for an equine hypospadias, performed by a consultant paediatric surgeon. The urethroplasty was achieved by applying the same surgical principles mastered from paediatric urology to a horse. The indication for surgery was contact dermatitis of the hind-leg, which impaired the thoroughbred foal's racing potential. OPERATION:

Biphasic pulses enhance bleomycin efficacy in a spontaneous canine perianal tumors model.

Perianal tumors (adenoma and carcinoma of the hepatoid glands) are frequently reported in veterinary literature. They are locally aggressive tumors with a low tendency to metastatic spread. An hormonal ethiology has been identified for the development of perianal adenomas in male dogs, while the carcinomas are free from hormonal influence. Standard treatments include surgery, cryotherapy or, in selected cases, radiation therapy. In this article we describe the outcome of a small cohort of canine patients with perianal tumors treated with bleomycin selectively driven by trains of biphasic pulse

Gastroduodenal ulceration in dogs. Retrospective study of 43 cases and literature review.

Forty three dogs with non-neoplastic canine gastric and/or duodenal ulcers were diagnosed at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Teaching Hospital (UTVTH) and reviewed in conjunction with dogs reported in the literature. No age, sex, or breed predilection was found. Most of the 43 UTVTH dogs presented with clinical signs referable to gastrointestinal disease, but evidence of hemorrhage was not always present. Nonregenerative anemia was a common (33/43 dogs) finding. Diagnosis of ulcer disease was made by contrast radiography, with clinical evidence of gastrointestinal hemorrhage, or surgery

Surgical Management of a Canine Encephalocele Communicating with the Nasal Cavity.

An encephalocele is a rare congenital or acquired cranial defect characterized by herniation of intracranial tissue through a defect in the skull base. In human and veterinary medicine, these lesions are frequently associated with abnormalities in neural tube development or structural weakness of the cranial bones, resulting in the protrusion of brain tissue and meninges through anatomical openings such as the cribriform plate. Although this condition has been extensively described in human neurosurgical research, reports on dogs remain limited, and the clinical significance of surgical interv

Ovariectomy induces regression of hyperplastic uterus in female dogs.

Cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH) is a common physiological affection in adult female dogs in diestrus, which can make the uterine environment susceptible to bacterial infections. It is known that hormonal interactions, mainly between progesterone and estrogen, are key players for development of the CEH-pyometra complex, but many questions remain regarding its etiopathogenesis. The present study proposes a new approach, to the authors' knowledge not yet described in literature, to add new information for better understanding of this affection and possibly establish new guidelines for obstet

Comparison of Different Pneumorrhaphy Methods after Partial Pulmonary Lobectomy in Dogs.

Pulmonary loborraphy can be performed using manual sutures and staples, although other methods, such as tissue adhesives, are also cited in the veterinary literature. Although the surgery is well tolerated in the canine species, failure in pulmonary aerostasis is still a reality since all the methods described so far eventually lead to air leakage after the use of the partial lobectomy technique in the lungs. Within this context, the aim of this research was to compare the effectiveness of different hermetic sealing methods after partial lobectomy of the right caudal lung lobe (RCLL) in dogs.

Polyorchidism in a cat.

A 9-mo-old, male domestic shorthair cat was presented for castration because of mounting behavior observed by the owner. On physical examination, the cat was bilaterally cryptorchid, but had penile spines. Abdominal exploration through a midline laparotomy revealed 2 pairs of masses. All 4 masses had gross features of testes, and ranged from 7 × 5 × 5 mm to 12 × 6 × 7 mm, with associated epididymal tissue. Histologically, each mass contained seminiferous tubules consistent with testicular tissue, and epididymal tubules, confirming a diagnosis of polyorchidism; deferent ducts were not found. Th

Maxillomandibulocardiac reflex in a dog.

BACKGROUND: The trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) is a brainstem reflex that may be observed in anaesthesia during surgical procedures stimulating the intracranial or peripheral portion of the trigeminal nerve. The peripheral TCR is divided into the oculocardiac reflex and the maxillomandibulocardiac reflex based on the affected sensory branches of the trigeminal nerve. In veterinary medicine the oculocardiac reflex has been described, however the maxillomandibulocardiac reflex has never been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old male Epagneul Breton was presented for surgical management of a

Puerperal development of ewes following dystocia: a retrospective analysis of two approaches to caesarean section.

The objective of this study was to retrospectively analyse the puerperal development of ewes referred to a veterinary teaching hospital following caesarean section in comparison with assisted parturition. Laparotomy was performed either via left flank incision (group 1, n=86) or ventral mid-line approach (group 2, n=33). Both groups were compared with ewes following non-surgical intervention (group 3, n=73). The overall fetal death rate was 41 per cent. There was no significant difference in fetal deaths between groups 1 and 2, but assisted delivery led to a higher number of liveborn lambs com

Successful treatment of a radioulnar synostosis in a Mississippi kite (Ictinia mississippiensis).

A Mississippi kite (Ictinia mississippiensis) was presented to the Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana, School of Veterinary Medicine, Louisiana State University, for an inability to fly and was subsequently diagnosed with a minimally displaced, closed, simple, short oblique, diaphyseal fracture of the distal third of the right ulna. A figure-8 bandage was initially applied to the wing to stabilize the fracture. Over a 5-week period, the kite developed progressive reduction in wing extension, and serial radiographs revealed a bridging callus at the ulnar fracture site, as well as development of a r

The effect of low-energy laser on skin-flap survival in the rat and porcine animal models.

Low-energy lasers are currently being used in the therapy of rheumatoid arthritis, chronic pain, muscle strain, and the promotion of wound healing in human and veterinary medicine. This study examined the effects of low-energy laser on skin-flap survival in a controlled interspecies study using the rat and porcine models. Twenty dorsal skin flaps based caudally were performed in 20 rats (10 laser-treated and 10 control flaps). The wounds were closed, and the flaps were sutured over the skin. Forty dorsal pig skin flaps based medially were raised in five pigs. The flaps were treated once per da

Thymoma in the dog: two case reports and review of 20 additional cases.

A 7-year-old German Shepherd Dog had a large cranial mediastinal mass that had resulted in chronic weight loss. A diagnosis of benign thymoma was made by transthoracic needle biopsy. The thymoma was removed surgically and the dog recovered without complications. At 4 months after surgery, the dog's activity was improved and it had gained weight. A 12-year-old mixed-breed dog was admitted for evaluation of dependent edema of the neck. Thoracic radiography revealed pleural effusion and lesions in the right lung and left scapula. Neoplastic epithelial cells were found in a needle aspiration speci
