Feeding and Nutritional Key Features of Crisponi/Cold-Induced Sweating Syndrome.

Feeding difficulties are constantly present in patients with Crisponi/cold-induced sweating syndrome type 1 (CS/CISS1). The aim of our study was to describe their prevalence and evolution from birth to adult age. We performed an observational study at the Department of Life Sciences and Public Health, Rome. Fourteen patients were included in this study (six M; mean age: 18 years; SD: 10.62 years; median age: 15 years; age range: 6-44 years); six were adults (43%). Data on oral motor abilities from birth were collected. Meal duration, presence of swallowing reflex, dysphagia symptoms, difficult…

In vivo assessments of microneedle arrays and iontophoresis of pilocarpine in human palmar sweating.

Emotional stress-induced sweating in glabrous skin of the palm and sole, which can be excessive in some individuals (hyperhidrosis), can negatively impact quality of life. Understanding the mechanisms underlying this response can lead to potential treatments. Transdermal iontophoresis is a method to administer ionized sudorific agents to sweat glands within the dermis. However, due to the reduced permeability of pharmacological agents in thicker skin such as the palms, this technique has been shown to be less effective when applied in thicker skin. Thus, we assessed the effectiveness of pre-tr…

Robotic sympathetic trunk reconstruction for compensatory sweating after thoracic sympathectomy.

OBJECTIVES: Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy may be complicated by the onset of disabling compensatory sweating (CS). The objective of this case series is to report the 2-year outcomes after robotic sympathetic trunk reconstruction (STR) for the reversal of CS in patients who had undergone endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy. METHODS: We prospectively followed-up a total of 23 patients who had undergone robotic STR because of intolerable CS between October 2017 and January 2021. A visual analog scale ranging from 0 to 10 (with 10 indicating the highest degree) was used to assess the severity o…

Are Antiperspirants Safe? Shedding Light on the Distribution of Aluminum Compounds in Sweat Glands.

The safety of antiperspirants has been a subject of intense debate, with conflicting perspectives and research findings. This study aimed to contribute to the discussion by investigating the distribution of aluminum chloride (AlCl 3 ), a common ingredient in antiperspirants, within the sweat glands. We enrolled a total of 10 patients seeking surgery for bromhidrosis in our study. Before surgery, we instructed the study participants to apply a specially formulated AlCl 3 staining antiperspirant to their underarms using a surgical pen with ink that resists easy removal. We excised the apocrine g…

Clinical and histological characterization of transient dermal pain triggered by sweating stimuli.

BACKGROUND: Tingling dermal pain triggered by sweating impairs the lives of patients with cholinergic urticaria and generalized anhidrosis. However, dermal pain evoked by sweating stimuli has been under investigated. METHODS: To clarify characteristics of tingling dermal pain on sweating, we retrospectively evaluated clinical and histopathological manifestations in 30 patients having the main problem of dermal pain on sweating, and the efficacy of treatments. RESULTS: Dermal pain upon sweating affected mostly young males. It accompanied eruptions upon sweating and/or hypohidrosis in 24 patie…

Long-Term Outcomes and Course of Compensatory Sweating after Endoscopic Sympathicotomy.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic thoracic sympathicotomy is an effective approach to the treatment of idiopathic localized hyperhidrosis, and compensatory sweating is the main reason for patient dissatisfaction. Our study discusses both the long-term outcomes of sympathicotomy and the course of compensatory sweating. METHODS: Patients with palmar and/or axillary hyperhidrosis who were operated by the same surgical team between January 2008 and December 2014 were included in the study. After at least 5 years (60 months) from operation, patients were questioned about their treatment outcomes by using an …

A 45-Year-Old Woman With 3 Weeks of Cough and Night Sweats.

A 45-year-old woman who received a renal transplant 7 years prior presented with a 3-week history of low-grade fever, night sweats, and a dry cough with scant sputum production. Additionally, she reported generalized weakness and increased fatigability. She denied hemoptysis or weight loss, and there had been no change in medication or foreign travel. She had no history of latent tuberculosis or sick contacts. She had recently relocated to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was sexually active with her boyfriend who worked as a prison guard. She also reported that she was briefly incarcerated 7 years…

Case report of excessive hand sweating that alters blood sugar measurements.

We present a clinical case that we did not find described in literature and yet is quite common in primary care. The patient described is female with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus treated with insulin and poor clinical response according to glycated haemoglobin measurements. In addition to the main diagnosis, she also shows excessive sweating in palms and feet, which explains why her blood sugar levels were wrong. This also led to treatment adjustments that were carried out with disregard to her true plasma glucose concentration. To conclude, this case report highlights the importance of tr…

Child who presented with hematohidrosis (sweating blood) with oppositional defiant disorder.

Hematohidrosis is a very rare condition of sweating blood. A child's case who presented to us with hematohidrosis is reported. There are only few reports in the literature. A 10-year-old boy presented to our hospital with a history of repeated episodes of oozing of blood from navel, eyes, ear lobules, and nose. During the examination, it disappeared as soon as it was mopped leaving behind no sign of trauma only to reappear within a few seconds. Bleeding time, clotting time, and prothrombin time were normal. Patient was diagnosed with hematohidrosis and oppositional defiant disorder clinically.…

Sweating ability and genotype in individuals with X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XLHED), the most common type of ectodermal dysplasia, is caused by EDA gene mutations. Reduced sweating contributes substantially to XLHED associated morbidity and mortality. To characterise the genotype-phenotype relationship, sweat gland function was assessed non-invasively in XLHED patients and healthy controls. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In 36 genotyped XLHED patients and 29 control subjects aged 0-57 years, pilocarpine-induced sweat volume, palmar sweat pore density, and palmar skin conductance before and after stimulation were determine…

The effect of spironolactone on sweat and urinary sodium excretion during exercise in humans.

This study examined the effect of spironolactone on urinary ([Na(+)](urine)) and sweat sodium concentration ([Na(+)](sweat)) when controlling for sweat rate. Fifteen healthy subjects were required to complete two 90-min exercise bouts (three 30-min ordered exercise bouts at 60%, 70%, and 80% of the subjects' age-predicted maximum heart rate) in a 35 degrees C and 40% relative humidity environmental chamber, once after administration of 300 mg spironolactone, and once after administration of 300 mg placebo. Both the drug and placebo were taken over an 18 h period, with the second 100 mg dose ta…

[The English Sweating Sickness' of 1529 in Augsburg: a challenge to body and soul and the printer].

In 1529, Sudor anglicus, the 'English Sweating Sickness', spread from England to Germany reaching the city of Augsburg. Its exact nature is unclear: the symptoms were profuse sweating, uncontrollable thirst, and headaches, with death occurring within hours of infection. Those who survived the first twenty-four hours returned to health. According to one source the fever arrived in Autumn 1529 and in September there were 800 deaths; another source gives November as the onset with 600 deaths. While these death rates were in fact relatively low compared with the plague, for instance, people were p…

Gustatory sweating recurring on peritoneal dialysis but resolving during periods of hemodialysis.

Gustatory sweating is a rare disorder characterized by profuse sweating on the forehead, face, scalp, and neck occurring soon after ingesting food, which has been reported in diabetic patients. The mechanism is thought to be triggered by taste buds and not gastric stimulation. We report a case where gustatory sweating repeatedly developed on peritoneal dialysis that resolved on periods of hemodialysis. A 32-year-old woman with diabetic end-stage renal disease developed gustatory sweating shortly after beginning continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis despite excellent clearances. After 5 mon…

T3/T4 thoracic sympathictomy and compensatory sweating in treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Compensatory sweating (CS) is one of the most common postoperative complications after thoracic sympathectomy, sympathicotomy or endoscopic sympathetic block (ESB) for palmar hyperhidrosis. This study was conducted to examine the relevance between CS and the sympathetic segment being transected in the surgical treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis, and thus to detect the potential mechanism of the occurrence of CS. METHODS: Between October 2004 and June 2006, 163 patients with primary hyperhidrosis were randomly divided into two groups, T(3) sympathicotomy (78 patients) and T(4) sympa…
