Pregnancy swimming causes short- and long-term neuroprotection against hypoxia-ischemia in very immature rats.

BackgroundHypoxia-ischemia (HI) is a major cause of neurological damage in preterm newborn. Swimming during pregnancy alters the offspring's brain development. We tested the effects of swimming during pregnancy in the very immature rat brain.MethodsFemale Wistar rats (n=12) were assigned to the sedentary (SE, n=6) or the swimming (SW, n=6) group. From gestational day 0 (GD0) to GD21 the rats in the SW group were made to swim for 20 min/day. HI on postnatal day (PND) 3 rats caused sensorimotor and cognitive impairments. Animals were distributed into SE sham (SESH), sedentary HIP3 (SEHI), swimmi…

Ethanol induced antidepressant-like effect in the mouse forced swimming test: modulation by serotonergic system.

AIM: The present investigation explored the modulatory role of serotonergic transmission in the acute ethanol-induced effects on immobility time in the mouse forced swim test (FST). METHODS AND RESULTS: Acute i.p. administration of ethanol (20% w/v, 2 or 2.5 g/kg, i.p.) decreased the immobility time in FST of mice, indicating its antidepressant-like effect while lower doses of ethanol (1, 1.5 g/kg, i.p.) were devoid of any effect in the FST. The mice pre-treated with a sub-effective dose of 5-HT2A agonist, DOI (10 μg/mouse, i.c.v.) or 5-HT1A receptor antagonist, WAY 100635 (0.1 μg/mouse, i.c.

Automated swimming activity monitor for examining temporal patterns of toxicant effects on individual Daphnia magna.

Aquatic pollutants are often biologically active at low concentrations and impact on biota in combination with other abiotic stressors. Traditional toxicity tests may not detect these effects, and there is a need for sensitive high-throughput methods for detecting sublethal effects. We have evaluated an automated infra-red (IR) light-based monitor for recording the swimming activity of Daphnia magna to establish temporal patterns of toxicant effects on an individual level. Activity was recorded for 48 h and the sensitivity of the monitor was evaluated by exposing D. magna to the reference chem…

Measuring gill paracellular permeability with polyethylene glycol-4000 in freely swimming trout: proof of principle.

The influence of swimming activity on gill paracellular permeability has not been measured previously in fishes. We critically assessed the use of tritium-labeled polyethylene glycol ([(3)H]PEG-4000) for this purpose, a substance that is also a classic marker for extracellular fluid volume, glomerular filtration rate and drinking rate. Tests (8 h) on resting freshwater trout showed that when measuring [(3)H]PEG-4000 clearance from the plasma in the efflux direction, correction for a large excretion via glomerular filtration was essential, necessitating urinary catheterization. When measuring […

Oxidative stress status and placental implications in diabetic rats undergoing swimming exercise after embryonic implantation.

The potential benefits and risks of physical exercise on fetal development during pregnancy remain unclear. The aim was to analyze maternal oxidative stress status and the placental morphometry to relate to intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) from diabetic female rats submitted to swimming program after embryonic implantation. Pregnant Wistar rats were distributed into 4 groups (11 animals/group): control-nondiabetic sedentary rats, control exercised-nondiabetic exercised rats, diabetic-diabetic sedentary rats, and diabetic exercised-diabetic exercised rats. A swimming program was used as a…

Gene deletion of P2Y4 receptor lowers exercise capacity and reduces myocardial hypertrophy with swimming exercise.

Nucleotides released within the heart under pathological conditions can be involved in cardioprotection or cardiac fibrosis through the activation purinergic P2Y(2) and P2Y(6) receptors, respectively. We previously demonstrated that adult P2Y(4)-null mice display a microcardia phenotype related to a cardiac angiogenic defect. To evaluate the functional consequences of this defect, we performed here a combination of cardiac monitoring and exercise tests. We investigated the exercise capacity of P2Y(4) wild-type and P2Y(4)-null mice in forced swimming and running tests. Analysis of their stress,…

Changes in in vivo [(3)H]-Ro15-4513 binding induced by forced swimming in mice.

Mice were forced to swim for 5 min in water at a temperature of 12 degrees C (cold water swim stress) or 32 degrees C (warm water swim stress), and stress-induced analgesia (SIA) was measured using the tail-flick test. The cold water swim stress induced non-opioid SIA as well as hypothermia, whereas the warm water swim stress caused opioid SIA. The in vivo binding of [(3)H]-Ro15-4513 was measured in the stressed mice and compared with that in control mice. The specific binding of [(3)H]-Ro15-4513 in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum was significantly altered by forced swimming i…

Swimming-induced suppression of rat pineal melatonin is prevented by pretreatment with calcium channel blockers.

Young adult male rats were treated with isoproterenol during the day to induce high levels of pineal N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity and melatonin. Roughly 2 hr later when pineal NAT activity and melatonin levels were elevated, animals were given either an injection of a calcium channel blocker, i.e., either nifedipine or verapamil, or diluent. The rats were then forced to swim for 10 min in room temperature (22 degrees C) water. Fifteen minutes after swimming onset, pineal glands were collected for measurement of NAT activity and melatonin. Swimming caused a dramatic reduction in pineal me…

Preparation and Hypoglycemic Activity of Enzymatically Hydrolyzed Peptides From the Swim Bladder of Pangasius bocourti.

The swim bladder of Pangasius bocourti is an underutilized fishery byproduct with high protein content, yet its potential as a source of hypoglycemic peptides has not been systematically investigated. This study aimed to prepare and characterize bioactive peptides from P. bocourti swim bladder (PBSB) through integrated enzymatic hydrolysis optimization, peptidomic analysis, and in vivo evaluation. Five proteases were comparatively assessed, and alkaline protease was identified as the optimal enzyme based on degree of hydrolysis and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Under the optimized conditi

Lightweight SwiM-UNet with multi-dimensional adaptor for efficient on-device medical image segmentation.

For medical image segmentation, transformer-based models have demonstrated superior performance. However, their high computational complexity remains a significant challenge. In contrast, Mamba provides a more computationally efficient alternative, though its segmentation performance is generally inferior to that of transformers. This study proposes a novel lightweight hybrid model based on U-Net, named SwiM-UNet, which represents the first Mamba–transformer hybrid model specifically designed for processing three-dimensional data. Specifically, efficient TSMamba (eTSMamba) blocks are incorpora
