The effect of the sex of the intermediate host on the growth and development of the metacestodes of Taenia crassiceps has been investigated. Three different strains of mice were used, the C R S, L A C A and C F L P strains and two strains of metacestode, the Toi and the E R S strains. The results show that matacestodes of T. crassiceps grow and multiply more rapidly in female than in male mice, although both sexes are equally susceptible to the infection. The origin of the parasite, i.e., from a rat or mouse host, affects the parasite growth.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common single cause of seizures/epilepsy in India and several other endemic countries throughout the world. It is also the most common parasitic disease of the brain caused by the cestode Taenia solium or pork tapeworm. The diagnosis of NCC and the tapeworm carrier (taeniasis) can be relatively inaccessible and expensive for most of the patients. In spite of the introduction of several new immunological tests, neuroimaging remains the main diagnostic test for NCC. The treatment of NCC is also mired in controversy although, there is emerging evidence that al…

Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis is a major public health problem in developing countries. This study reports genotypic analysis of T. solium cysticerci collected from two different endemic areas of North (Chandigarh) and North East India (Dibrugarh) by the sequencing of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene. The variation in cox1 sequences of samples collected from these two different geographical regions located at a distance of 2585 km was minimal. Alignment of the nucleotide sequences with different species of Taenia showed the similarity with Asian genotype of T. s…

A population-based case-control study to determine social and behavioural risk factors for Taenia solium cysticercosis in humans was carried … eworm proglottides. The results indicate that health education in combination with chemotherapy for taeniasis is required for the control of cysticercosis in humans.

The pork infected with cysticerci was sent to our laboratory in June 1971. Microscopic examination revealed the infection of Cysticercus cellulosae. Subsequently, the source of the pork was traced, and the survey of intestinal parasitism was carried out among inhabitants at Tan-nan village, Hsin-I District, Nantou County, Taiwan, in August 1973. Results obtained only indicated the presence rather than endemic of taeniasis solium in this village. The parasites and infection rates found in the present study from 417 individuals by means of direct smear and formalin-ether sedimentation technic of…

An adult hymenolepidid tapeworm was recovered from a 52-year-old Tibetan woman during a routine epidemiological survey for human taeniasis/cysticercosis in Sichuan, China. Phylogenetic analyses based on sequences of nuclear 28S ribosomal DNA and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 showed that the human isolate is distinct from Hymenolepis diminuta and Hymenolepis nana, the common parasites causing human hymenolepiasis. Proglottids of the human isolate were unfortunately unsuitable for morphological identification. However, the resultant phylogeny demonstrated the human isolate to be a…

Since the end of the 1990s, we have witnessed a slow evolution in France leading to the disappearance of disciplines related to tropical dis … the virtual disappearance, in our country, of autochthonous parasitic diseases such as fasciolosis, taeniasis, or amoebiasis. Priority is therefore given to mycology, especially respiratory infections, which are predominant in protected and aging populations. However, should this be done at the expense of diagnostic and treatment skills for diseases affecti …

Parasitic infections are a public health problem that affects all population levels in developing countries including Palestine. The current study describes the epidemiology of parasitic infections in Palestine from 2008 to 2017. Twelve prominent parasitic infections were reported: leishmaniasis (both cutaneous and visceral), malaria, hydatid disease caused by hydatid cysts, toxoplasmosis, ascariasis, oxyuriasis, strongyloidiasis, taeniasis caused by Taenia saginata, amebiasis, giardiasis, and scabies. A total of 137,106 cases were reported; among them, 92,494 (67%) in the Gaza Strip and 44,61…

There is an increasing interest in reducing the incidence of human neurocysticercosis, caused by infection with the larval stage of Taenia solium. Several intervention trials are currently assessing various options for control of T. solium transmission. A critical aspect of these trials will be the evaluation of whether the interventions have been successful. However, there is no consensus about the most appropriate or valuable methods that should be used. Here, we undertake a critical assessment of the diagnostic tests which are currently available for human T. solium taeniasis and human and …

The helminthic fauna of vertebrates in the Yamal peninsula consists of 61 species: of them 2 species are monogenic, 6 are trematodes, 29 are cestodes, and 24 are nematodes. Twelve species of the 4 are antroponoses and 8 are zoonoses which may parasite on human beings. Human infection with some zoonoses is due to local habits of eating raw or undercooked meat of wild animals, domestic deers, and fish. These helminthic diseases include trichinosis, taeniasis, opisthorchiasis, diphyllobothriasis. On contacting with dogs and Arctic foxes, the population is infected with echinococciasis, alveococci…
