Reprogrammable soft actuation and shape-shifting via tensile jamming.

The emerging generation of robots composed of soft materials strives to match biological motor adaptation skills via shape-shifting. Soft robots often harness volumetric expansion directed by strain limiters to deform in complex ways. Traditionally, strain limiters have been inert materials embedded within a system to prescribe a single deformation. Under changing task demands, a fixed deformation mode limits adaptability. Recent technologies for on-demand reprogrammable deformation of soft bodies, including thermally activated variable stiffness materials and jamming systems, presently suffer

How task-sharing in abortion care became the norm in Sweden: A case study of historic and current determinants and events.

We performed a country case study using thematic analysis of interviews and existing grey and published literature to identify facilitators and barriers to the implementation of midwife-provided abortion care in Sweden. Identified facilitating factors were: (1) the historical role and high status of Swedish midwives; (2) Swedish research and development of medical abortion that enabled an enlarged clinical role for midwives; (3) collaborations between individual clinicians and researchers within the professional associations, and the autonomy of clinical units to implement changes in clinical

Preliminary evidence of biased attentional mechanisms and reward processing in adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Individuals with obsessive-compulsive-disorder (OCD) may have difficulties in using feedback from rewarding and punishing experiences to optimally guide future decisions. The current aim was to examine how adults with OCD use associative learning feedback to direct attention toward learned stimuli when the action-outcome contingency for those stimuli has changed. Participants first learned to select high-probability (over low-probability) rewarding stimuli and low-probability (over high-probability) loss stimuli. Participants then saw these stimuli as the second of two targets in a task where

Language MEG predicts postoperative verbal memory change in left mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify whether preoperative language magnetoencephalography (MEG) predicts postoperative verbal memory (VM) changes in left mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (LMTLE). METHODS: We reviewed 18 right-handed patients with LMTLE who underwent anterior temporal lobectomy or selective amygdala hippocampectomy, 12 with (HS+) and 6 without hippocampal sclerosis (HS-). Patients underwent neuropsychological assessment before and after surgery. MEG was measured with an auditory verbal learning task in patients preoperatively and in 15 right-handed controls. Dynamic statistical parametric mappi

Neural correlates of altered feedback learning in women recovered from anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with exaggerated self-control and altered reward-based decision making, but the underlying neural mechanisms are poorly understood. Consistent with the notion of excessive cognitive control, we recently found increased dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) activation in acutely ill patients (acAN) on lose-shift trials in a probabilistic reversal learning (PRL) task. However, undernutrition may modulate brain function. In attempt to disentangle trait from state factors, the current fMRI study investigated cognitive control in recovered patients (recAN). Thi

First-Order Cross-Domain Meta Learning for Few-Shot Remote Sensing Object Classification.

Remote sensing images exhibit intrinsic domain complexity arising from multi-source sensor variances, which heterogeneity fundamentally challenges conventional cross-domain few-shot methods that assume simple distribution shifts. Addressing this, we propose a first-order Cross-Domain Meta Learning (CDML) for few-shot remote sensing object classification. CDML implements a dual-stage domain adaptation task as the fundamental meta-learning unit, and includes a cross-domain meta-train phase (CDMTrain) and a cross-domain meta-test phase (CDMTest). In CDMTrain, we propose an inner-loop multi-domain

Aging-related changes in cognitive flexibility: fMRI meta-analysis.

Cognitive flexibility-the ability to adaptively shift between different mental processes-is essential for human functioning. This meta-analysis examines age-related changes in neural correlates of cognitive flexibility using two common assessments: the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (rule-discovery) and Task-Switching Paradigm (rule-retrieval). We synthesized findings from 85 articles comprising 118 experiments with 2246 participants across young, middle-age, and older adult groups. Activation Likelihood Estimation analyses revealed an age-related decrease in neural involvement, particularly in p

A new angle on mental rotation ability in transgender men: Modulation by ovarian milieu.

Organizational/activational theory posits that transgender individuals should perform in the direction of their gender, not their sex, on cognitive tasks that show sex differences-the largest of which are observed on visuospatial tasks. Yet, tests of this hypothesis have been mixed for transgender men (TM). One possible reason is that performance shifts associated with the hormonal milieu at testing have not been fully considered in TM. Although "activating" influences, like gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT), are well-characterized in this population, endogenous ones, like ovarian cyclin

Exploring prism exposure after hemispheric damage: Reduced aftereffects following left-sided lesions.

Prism adaptation is a well-known method used to investigate brain plasticity, and a promising technique for the rehabilitation of unilateral spatial neglect (USN). Only little evidence about the mechanisms of prism adaptation (PA) in patients with left-brain damage is on record, and about putative differences of PA, and the aftereffects (AEs), between patients with left and right brain damage. In the present study, PA and the AEs were assessed in 30 brain-damaged patients, 20 with right-sided lesions (10 with and 10 without USN), and 10 with left-sided lesions without USN, as well as in a cont

Impairment in shifting attention in autistic and cerebellar patients.

MRI and autopsy evidence of early maldevelopment of cerebellar vermis and hemispheres in autism raise the question of how cerebellar maldevelopment contributes to the cognitive and social deficits characteristic of autism. Compared with normal controls, autistic patients and patients with acquired cerebellar lesions were similarly impaired in a task requiring rapid and accurate shifts of attention between auditory and visual stimuli. Neurophysiologic and behavioral evidence rules out motor dysfunction as the cause of this deficit. These findings are consistent with the proposal that in autism

Dissociation between implicit and explicit gaze perception and their metacognitive representations scales with the degree of autistic traits.

Gaze perception is crucial for inferring others' attentional state. However, it remains understudied whether implicit (automatic) and explicit (deliberate) gaze perception rely on distinct underlying mechanisms and whether these are affected by autistic traits. We used the same real-life images with an actor being surrounded by objects for two separate tasks: Participants either identified the object the actor was gazing at (explicit task) or were instructed to detect a cued object, with the actor's gaze being task-irrelevant (implicit task). Our findings demonstrate that implicit and explicit

Using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment to examine the effect of the new Hotel Housekeeping California Standard.

A housekeeper's job includes a variety of repetitive and strenuous tasks, which can put workers at high risk for musculoskeletal disorders. In 2018, a new standard was implemented in California aiming to prevent work-related injuries of hospitality industry workers. This paper assesses California housekeepers performing regular work tasks during their shifts from 2018 to 2020. Rapid Upper Limb Assessments (RULA) after the standard was implemented found average right-arm scores for scrubbing tasks (M = 6.93, SD = 0.00), vacuuming (M = 6.27, SD = 0.45), and trash-collecting (M = 4.48, SD = 0.50)

Patterns of task-related slow brain potentials in dyslexia.

Six dyslexic youths who met the Hughes and Denckla criteria of "dyslexia pure" and 10 normal control subjects were investigated with DC recordings of task-related cortical negativity using 10 leads over the right and left hemispheres. Potentials were recorded during the following tasks: reading, orthographic error detection, letter series, word assembly, word fluency, finding of antonyms, and viewing of Necker cubes. Both groups exhibited greater right hemisphere negativity during the Necker cube task. Whereas controls revealed greater left hemisphere negativity during linguistic tasks, the re

The Ocular Parameter Changes Caused by Reading With Remote Image Optical Screen.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze the differences in ocular parameter changes induced by reading with traditional electronic screens (TESs) compared with those associated with the remote image optical screen (RIOS), further evaluating the effects of RIOS on ocular parameters. METHODS: Thirty-five healthy participants (70 eyes) were enrolled in the prospective self-controlled study, completing two distinct reading tasks. Task A: near reading using TESs for 20 minutes; and task B: near reading with RIOS for an equivalent duration. The spherical equivalent (SE), anterior segment parameters, c

The role of the right temporoparietal junction in attention and social interaction as revealed by ALE meta-analysis.

The right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) is frequently associated with different capacities that to shift attention to unexpected stimuli (reorienting of attention) and to understand others' (false) mental state [theory of mind (ToM), typically represented by false belief tasks]. Competing hypotheses either suggest the rTPJ representing a unitary region involved in separate cognitive functions or consisting of subregions subserving distinct processes. We conducted activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analyses to test these hypotheses. A conjunction analysis across ALE meta-analyses del

A domain adaptation benchmark for T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance image segmentation.

Accurate brain segmentation is critical for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis pipelines. Machine-learning-based brain MR image segmentation methods are among the state-of-the-art techniques for this task. Nevertheless, the segmentations produced by machine learning models often degrade in the presence of expected domain shifts between the test and train sets data distributions. These domain shifts are expected due to several factors, such as scanner hardware and software differences, technology updates, and differences in MRI acquisition parameters. Domain adaptation (DA) methods can m

Cybernic robot hand-arm that realizes cooperative work as a new hand-arm for people with a single upper-limb dysfunction.

A robot hand-arm that can perform various tasks with the unaffected arm could ease the daily lives of patients with a single upper-limb dysfunction. A smooth interaction between robot and patient is desirable since their other arm functions normally. If the robot can move in response to the user's intentions and cooperate with the unaffected arm, even without detailed operation, it can effectively assist with daily tasks. This study aims to propose and develop a cybernic robot hand-arm with the following features: 1) input of user intention via bioelectrical signals from the paralyzed arm, the

Neural dynamics of constraint relaxation and problem representation changes in single-trial insight problem solving: An fNIRS study.

Insight problem solving involves overcoming an impasse when a solution seems unreachable, often experienced as an 'Aha!' moment. In such solving, shifting from an incorrect representation imposed by constraints to a correct representation through constraint relaxation is critical. Prior research compared brain activity when constraint relaxation and representation change occurred versus when they did not occur, but neural activity before and after such changes within trials has remained underexplored. This study examines neural correlates of problem solving progress, focusing on transitions fr

Impulsivity and compulsivity in binge eating disorder: A systematic review of behavioral studies.

BACKGROUND: Binge eating disorder (BED) often includes impulsive and compulsive behaviors related to eating behavior and food. Impulsivity and compulsivity generally may contribute to the etiology and maintenance of multiple psychiatric disorders including BED. This review aimed to identify and synthesize available behavioral studies of impulsivity and compulsivity among individuals with BED. METHOD: A systematic search was performed focusing on BED and specific facets of impulsivity (rapid response and choice) and compulsivity (set-shifting, cognitive flexibility, and/or habit learning). Short-Term Fasting Selectively Influences Impulsivity in Healthy Individuals.

Previous research has shown that short-term fasting in healthy individuals is associated with changes in risky decision-making. The current experiment was designed to examine the influence of short-term fasting in healthy individuals on four types of impulsivity: reflection impulsivity, risky decision-making, delay aversion, and action inhibition. Participants were tested twice, once when fasted for 20 h, and once when satiated. Participants demonstrated impaired action inhibition when fasted; committing significantly more errors of commission during a food-related Affective Shifting Task. Par
