Tattoos and transfusion-transmitted disease risk: implications for the screening of blood donors in Brazil.

Having a tattoo has been associated with serological evidence of hepatitis B and C viruses, as well as human immunodeficiency virus infections and syphilis; all of these are known to be transmissible by blood transfusion. These associations are of higher magnitude for individuals with nonprofessionally-applied tattoos and with two or more tattoos. Tattoos are common among drug addicts and prisoners, conditions that are also associated with transfusion-transmitted diseases. We examined the implications of these associations for the screening of blood donors in Brazil. Numbers of individuals who

[Amalgam tattoo--an important differential diagnosis from malignant melanoma of the mouth mucosa].

Amalgam tattoos develop as an amalgam deposit often as a result of continuous contact between an amalgam filling and the gingiva or amalgam fragments embedded in the oral tissue during dental filling or surgical operations. Sometimes fragments of amalgam restorations are broken off during extraction and embed in the adjacent soft tissue. In our case a small piece of amalgam had broken off during an extraction after retrograde filling up this tooth some years before following a resection of the dental root. Embedded in the depth of the bony resection cavity the piece of amalgam had produced the

Axillary Lymph Node Calcifications due to Tattoo Pigment: A Radiologic-Pathologic Correlation.

Tattoo pigment may migrate to regional lymph nodes and appear as dense deposits and/or calcifications, mimicking malignant axillary findings on breast imaging. We report a breast imaging case with apparent axillary lymph node calcifications detected on mammography and ultrasound, in which image-guided sampling and histopathology demonstrated tattoo pigment-related deposits without malignancy. Awareness of this benign mimic, combined with careful correlation with the clinical history and multimodality imaging, can prevent unnecessary escalation of care. Additionally, confirming imaging-patholog

Preferential Localization of Fixed Drug Eruption Over a Cosmetic Red Lip Tattoo.

Fixed drug eruption (FDE) is a delayed hypersensitivity reaction characterized by recurrent lesions at the same site following re-exposure t … d FDE preferentially localized to an immunologically altered cutaneous district created by cosmetic tattooing rather than tattoo hypersensitivity. This case highlights cosmetic tattooing as a potential locus minoris resistentiae that may predispose to preferential FDE localization and delay diagnosis.

Incidence of Tattoo-Associated Melanoma in the Netherlands (1991-2023): A Nationwide Registry Study.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Tattooing is an increasingly prevalent practice that is associated with various clinical complications. The carcinogenic potential of tattoo pigments remains unclear. While 45 case reports have described melanomas colocalizing with tattoos thus far, a pathogenetic link between tattoos and melanomas remains unproven. No nationwide epidemiological study has investigated the incidence of tattoo-associated melanoma (TAM). This study's objectives are to determine the incidence of TAM in the Netherlands from 1991 to 2023, analyse TAM characteristics and patient demograph…

Tattoo ink exposure is associated with lymphoma and skin cancers - a Danish study of twins.

BACKGROUND: We aim to study the potential association between tattoo ink exposure and development of certain types of cancers in the recently established Danish Twin Tattoo Cohort. Tattoo ink is known to transfer from skin to blood and accumulate in regional lymph nodes. We are concerned that tattoo ink induces inflammation at the deposit site, leading to chronic inflammation and increasing risk of abnormal cell proliferation, especially skin cancer and lymphoma. METHODS: We conducted two designs of twin studies to improve confounder control: A cohort study of 2,367 randomly selected twins an

Safe and efficacious use of the Q-switched alexandrite laser to treat traumatic tattoo.

Traumatic tattoos result from the forceful implantation of foreign material into the skin and may present a significant cosmetic burden to patients. Long-lasting or permanent skin pigmentation in traumatic tattoo may arise from particles of numerous materials such as fireworks, metals, gunpowder, asphalt, and dust embedded within injured skin. Our aim was to demonstrate the appropriate and beneficial use of the Q-switched alexandrite laser to treat traumatic tattoos. The patient's pigmented scars were biopsied and processed using standard histological methods to demonstrate foreign material wi

Inkjet-printed drug-loaded temporary tattoos for personalized pediatric pain treatment.

Parents worldwide suffer from their children's frequent refusal to take their medicine - even creams and patches may be refused due to tedious application, painful removal, and caprice. However, children find decorative tattoos appealing. Hence, a personalized drug-loaded temporary tattoo as a novel pediatric dosage form is presented. As a showcase, a pain treatment prototype tattoo based on a lidocaine/prilocaine eutectic was developed. By employing piezoelectric inkjet printing of the drug onto a decorative motif, which can be chosen based on the child's personal preference, the drug content

Optical-Tattoo Sensing for Non-Contact Control of Bionic Limbs: A Conceptual Framework.

Conventional pattern recognition (PR) methods in bionic hand systems are reliant on contact-based sensors and remain vulnerable to the inherent instability of biological signals. This study presents an alternative method that uses a novel non-contact PR approach to classify the motion of individual fingers and hand grasping gestures. This method does not depend on biosignals; instead, it utilises optical sensing. To enhance optical differentiation during muscle contraction, interference-pigment tattoos were applied to the targeted areas of the skin of the muscular areas. In this approach, musc

Erythroderma, Alopecia, Anhidrosis, and Vitiligo as Complications of a Red Ink Tattoo-A Case Report.

Background: Adverse reactions to tattoo pigments are increasingly recognized, yet severe systemic complications remain rare and poorly characterized. Red tattoo ink, in particular, is associated with delayed hypersensitivity reactions, but widespread manifestations affecting multiple organ systems have not been documented. This case report aims to describe an unusual constellation of erythroderma, alopecia universalis, anhidrosis, and vitiligo triggered by red tattoo ink and to highlight the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges associated with such reactions. Case presentation: This case repo

Determination of Rosin Oxidation Products in Pigments and Inks as a Potential Source of Tattoo Allergenicity.

BACKGROUND: The vast majority of allergic tattoo reactions involve red-shaded tattoos without a causal explanation. OBJECTIVE: To determine … e the most likely to be allergenic. ROPs within those inks are believed to remain in the body after tattooing, acting as haptens. This view is consistent with biopsy reports of allergic reactions to red-shaded tattoos. We propose that ROPs may be at least partially responsible for those reactions. Pending proof of this proposal, tattoo-ink manufacturers mig …

Towards Simultaneous Noninvasive Arterial and Venous Oxygenation Monitoring with Wearable E-Tattoo.

While noninvasive arterial blood oxygenation is easily estimated using peripheral pulse oximeters, noninvasive venous blood oxygenation monitoring is still a critical unmet need. Critical conditions that lead to inefficient extraction of oxygen from the blood, such as sepsis or shock, can only be detected by analyzing the oxygen content of the venous blood. In this work, we introduce a soft wearable e-tattoo sensor that simultaneously measures the arterial and venous pulses from the wrist. First, we prove that the origin of the signal is venous pulsatility. We hypothesize that a significant ob

Self-reported dental anxiety and injection phobia among individuals with tattoos and piercings.

Injection phobia and dental anxiety can, in severe cases, lead to avoidance of necessary treatment. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate self-reported injection phobia and dental anxiety among individuals with tattoos and/or piercings. The Injection Phobia Scale-Anxiety (IPSA) short form and the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) questionnaires were applied. Both the total IPSA and MDAS scores were significantly higher for individuals with tattoos in comparison with a control group (P < 0.001), suggesting a need for anxiety-reducing measures and facilitated treatment for this group
