A total of 739 taiga ticks of ixodes persulcatus species, obtained in the recreational zone of St. Petersburg, were studied for the presence of Babesia sp. with polymerase chain reaction. All these ticks underwent the preliminary examination for the presence of Borrelia (3 species), Ehrlichia (2 species) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus. In 7 cases Babesia were detected among 413 ticks containing other pathogens. Among 326 ticks no Babesia were detected, as well as no other pathogens. The population of the Top End of the Northern Territory has a high incidence of several infections of particular significance in the immunosuppressed. The following protocol for evaluation and treatment of patients prior to immunosuppression was developed in order to reduce the incidence of serious opportunistic infections. This manuscript delineates the territory of the anterior choroidal artery (AChA) in rats, as defined by the induction of an AChA infarction. By advancing a 0.24-mm surgical suture up the internal carotid artery (ICA) to a point 0.5-2 mm proximal to the middle cerebral artery (MCA) origin, the AChA could be occluded and a reliable AChA distribution infarction was produced in 62% (23/37) of animals. We conducted a brief health survey of adults in an isolated Northern Territory Aboriginal community, whose standardised mortality rates are the second highest in Australia. Copro-ovoscopic survey of the human population in the Khabarovsk Territory and the analysis of data of account of territorial sanitary epidemiological station showed that people invaded with D. klebanovskii are registered only in areas whose rivers catadromous salmon come to spawn. Most of invaded people are recorded on the seashore. The risk of tapeworm invasion and the epidemiological characteristics of the carry-over zone are discussed.
