Primary hyperhidrosis: Implications on symptoms, daily life, health and alcohol consumption when treated with botulinum toxin.

Primary hyperhidrosis affects approximately 3% of the population and reduces quality of life in affected persons. Few studies have investigated the symptoms of anxiety, depression and hazardous alcohol consumption among those with hyperhidrosis and the effect of treatment with botulinum toxin. The first aim of this study was to investigate the effect of primary hyperhidrosis on mental and physical health, and alcohol consumption. Our second aim was to study whether and how treatment with botulinum toxin changed these effects. One hundred and fourteen patients answered questionnaires regarding

Effect of nicotine on 35% CO2-induced anxiety: A study in healthy volunteers.

Panic disorder and cigarette smoking co-occur at a rate that exceeds what would be expected by chance. Theoretically, cigarette smoking may (a) attenuate panicky symptoms via cognitive factors or pharmacological action, (b) contribute to the development of panic disorder, or (c) share an etiological vulnerability with panic. The present study was aimed at testing whether nicotine has a direct influence on laboratory-elicited panic. In a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized, cross-over study, 33 healthy nonsmokers underwent a 35% CO2 challenge after transdermal administration of a nicot

Validation of the Computerized Adaptive Test for Mental Health in Primary Care.

PURPOSE: The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for depression in the general adult population. Although screening questionnaires for depression and anxiety exist in primary care settings, electronic health tools such as computerized adaptive tests based on item response theory can advance screening practices. This study evaluated the validity of the Computerized Adaptive Test for Mental Health (CAT-MH) for screening for major depressive disorder (MDD) and assessing MDD and anxiety severity among adult primary care patients. METHODS: We approached 402 English-speaking adul

Self-reported negative attentional bias is associated with smartphone addiction among male flight cadets: chain mediation by impulsivity and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: With the widespread use of smartphones, smartphone addiction has become a prominent mental health issue Negative attentional bias, a stable cognitive trait, is closely linked to addictive behaviors. Drawing on cognitive resource theory and emotional regulation theory, self-reported negative attentional bias may be linked to increased impulsivity via cognitive resource depletion and heightened anxiety through amplified negative perceptions, with these associations potentially forming a chain pathway related to smartphone addiction. However, the specific mechanism remains unclear. M

From lockdown to Liberation: How inflexible thinking, obsessive-compulsive and affective symptoms shape pandemic adjustment.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted daily life, and the transition to post-pandemic living presented additional psychological challenges. Previous research shows that individuals with obsessive-compulsive traits and pre-existing mental health histories were vulnerable to adjustment difficulties, which appear to be mediated by depression, anxiety, and stress. AIMS: This study examined the relationship between post-pandemic adjustment and mental health variables in a population-based cohort during the final lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, tracking outcomes over six month

INTRODUCTION: Persistent psychological distress including symptoms of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occur in as many as 70% of intensive care unit (ICU) survivors. However, few therapies exist that target this population's unique symptoms and needs. To address this, we developed the Blueprint adaptive coping skills mobile app, which was found to be feasible and reduce psychological distress symptoms in a recent single-center pilot randomized control trial (RCT). OBJECTIVE: To describe the methods of the Blueprint 2 multi-center RCT (clinicaltrials.gov ID NCT065

Assessment of contemporary social phobia verbal report instruments.

The Social Phobia Scale (SPS), the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) and the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory (SPAI) were compared to each other and evaluated in patients with social phobia. We examined the relationship of these three contemporary social phobia verbal report instruments with each other, as well as with behavioral and self-report cognitive criteria. As expected, the three social phobia scales were significantly intercorrelated, although they differed in their relationship to the behavioral and cognitive measures. Specifically, the SPS had a significant negative relatio

The Association Between Autistic Traits and Disordered Eating is Moderated by Sex/Gender and Independent of Anxiety and Depression.

Previous studies have reported positive correlations between autistic traits and disordered eating, though it is unclear whether the association is moderated by sex/gender or whether it is independent of anxiety or depression. We present the findings of an online survey of 691 participants who completed the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26). Following a pre-registered analysis plan, we observed positive correlations between AQ and EAT-26 in males and females, with the association being significantly stronger in fe

The relationship between restrained eating and exercise addiction: The chain mediating role of social physique anxiety and grit.

BACKGROUND: Exercise addiction often coexists with eating disorders and extreme dietary habits. It has remained unclear whether restrained eating, the most common maladaptive behavior in eating disorders, is associated with exercise addiction and whether some common psychological factors will affect their relationship. This study aimed to explore the interplay among restrained eating, exercise addiction, social physique anxiety, and grit. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1575 Chinese college students (73.9 % men) aged 17-24 (19.68 ± 0.02). Data were collected using the Dutc
