BACKGROUND: The feasibility of completing a lobectomy by completely video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (cVATS) in the management of bronchiectasis is unclear. By retrospectively comparing the outcomes from the lobectomies that used thoracotomy vs. cVATS, we determined the appropriateness of the minimally invasive cVATS approach in the management of bronchiectasis.

Hemangiomas in the mediastinum are uncommon, and the majority of these tumors are located in the anterior mediastinum. The present report describes an extremely rare case of a hemangioma in the middle mediastinum. A 40-year-old male patient presented with a mass in the left lower lung field on radiographic screening. We present a rare case of malignant invasive thymoma (type A) arising from the posterior mediastinum. A 17-year-old girl was referred to our clinic after detection of a mass on a chest roentgenogram. Thoracoscopy showed a lobulated, pale yellowish mass located in the posterior compartment together with several foci in the lung parenchyma. The tumor and parenchymal foci were totally resected through a left minithoracotomy. Postoperative pathology revealed malignant invasive thymoma type A.

Adjuvant surgical resection in the setting of pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial infection removes focal parenchymal disease thought to serve as a poorly perfused reservoir for organisms, thus relatively resistant to standard antimicrobial therapy. Thymic lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) is a rare subtype of thymic cancer and reported in 6% of thymic carcinoma.
