Rapid temporal accumulation in spider fear: Evidence from hierarchical drift diffusion modelling.

Fear can distort sense of time--making time seem slow or even stand still. Here, I used hierarchical drift diffusion modeling (HDDM; Vandeke … were higher-for spiders compared with birds. This result and further insights into how fear affects time perception would not have been possible on the basis of analyses of choice proportion data alone. Further results were interpreted in the context of a recent 2-stage model of time perception (Balcı & Simen, 2014). The results highlight the usefulness of diffus …

The neural link between stimulus duration and spatial location in the human visual hierarchy.

Integrating spatial and temporal information is essential for our sensory experience. While psychophysical evidence suggests spatial dependencies in duration perception, few studies have directly tested the neural link between temporal and spatial processing. Using ultra-high-field functional MRI and neuronal-based modeling, we investigated how and where the processing and the representation of a visual stimulus duration is linked to that of its spatial location. Our results show a transition in duration coding: from monotonic and spatially-dependent in early visual cortex to unimodal and spat

Brainstem correlates of concurrent speech identification in adverse listening conditions.

When two voices compete, listeners can segregate and identify concurrent speech sounds using pitch (fundamental frequency, F0) and timbre (harmonic) cues. Speech perception is also hindered by the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). How clear and degraded concurrent speech sounds are represented at early, pre-attentive stages of the auditory system is not well understood. To this end, we measured scalp-recorded frequency-following responses (FFR) from the EEG while human listeners heard two concurrently presented, steady-state (time-invariant) vowels whose F0 differed by zero or four semitones (ST) p

Combined effects of auditory and visual cues on the perception of vection.

Vection is the illusion of self-motion in the absence of real physical movement. The aim of the present study was to analyze how multisensory inputs (visual and auditory) contribute to the perception of vection. Participants were seated in a stationary position in front of a large, curved projection display and were exposed to a virtual scene that constantly rotated around the yaw-axis, simulating a 360° rotation. The virtual scene contained either only visual, only auditory, or a combination of visual and auditory cues. Additionally, simulated rotation speed (90°/s vs. 60°/s) and the number o

Getting hold of approaching objects: in search of a common control of hand-closure initiation in catching and grasping.

Both in the catching and grasping component of prehension, the hand opens and closes before hand-object contact is made. The initiation of hand closure has to be coordinated with the time course of the decrease of the distance between the hand and the target object, i.e., with the reaching component in prehension or the approach of the target in catching. The authors investigated if this initiation of hand closure could be explained by a common control. For this purpose, they fitted the dynamic timing model to data from the two tasks. In both tasks, participants were asked to get hold of an ob

Visual and visuomotor performance in dyslexic children.

The present study was designed to compare the performance of nine dyslexic boys and nine age- and IQ-matched controls on tasks which presumably tap visual functions dependent on the subcortical magnocellular (M) pathway (flicker sensitivity) and the cortical dorsal stream (stereoacuity, structure-from-motion, visuomotor control). Increasing evidence suggests that dyslexics experience impairments in M-system functioning. In keeping with previous work supporting this conclusion, dyslexic subjects in the present study were found to have reduced sensitivity to flicker relative to controls. Given t

Infants' responsiveness to the auditory and visual attributes of a sounding/moving stimulus.

Responses to unimodal and multimodal attributes of a compound auditory/visual stimulus were investigated in 4-, 6-, 8-, and 10-month-old infants. First, infants were habituated to a compound stimulus consisting of a visual stimulus that moved up and down on a video monitor and a sound that occurred each time the visual stimulus reversed direction at the bottom. Once each infant met a habituation criterion, a series of test trials was administered to assess responsiveness to the components of the compound stimulus. Response was defined as the total duration of visual fixation in each trial. In

A thalamo-parietal cortex circuit is critical for place-action coordination.

The anterior and lateral thalamus (ALT) contains head direction cells that signal the directional orientation of an individual within the environment. ALT has direct and indirect connections with the parietal cortex (PC), an area hypothesized to play a role in coordinating viewer-dependent and viewer-independent spatial reference frames. This coordination between reference frames would allow an individual to translate movements toward a desired location from memory. Thus, ALT-PC functional connectivity would be critical for moving toward remembered allocentric locations. This hypothesis was te

Electrophysiological signatures of visual temporal processing deficits in developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that affects reading ability despite normal intelligence and education. In search of core deficits, previous evidence has linked DD with impairments in temporal aspects of perceptual processing, which might underlie phonological deficits as well as inefficient graphemic parsing during reading. However, electrophysiological evidence for atypical temporal processing in DD is still scarce in the visual modality. Here, we investigated the efficiency of both temporal segregation and integration of visual information by means of eve

Enhanced reading abilities is modulated by faster visual spatial attention.

Research has shown improved reading following visual magnocellular training in individuals with dyslexia. Many studies have demonstrated how the magnocellular pathway controls visual spatial attention. Therefore, we have investigated the relationship between magnocellular pathway and visual spatial attention deficits in dyslexia in order to better understand how magnocellular-based interventions may help children to learn to read. Magnocellular function, visual spatial attention, and reading abilities of thirty elementary school students with dyslexia, aged between 8 and 10, were measured. The

Hitting moving targets: a dissociation between the use of the target's speed and direction of motion.

Previous work has indicated that people do not use their judgment of a target's speed to determine where to hit it. Instead, they use their judgment of the target's changing position and an expected speed (based on the speed of previous targets). In the present study we investigate whether people also ignore the target's apparent direction of motion, and use the target's changing position and an expected direction of motion instead. Subjects hit targets that moved in slightly different directions across a screen. Sometimes the targets disappeared after 150 ms, long before the subjects could re

When is a view unusual? A single case study of orientation-dependent visual agnosia.

Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain why some neurological patients fail to recognise objects from unusual views: that it results from difficulty identifying an object's principal axis when it is foreshortened, identifying an object when landmark features are occluded, or an inability to rotate mental images. It was possible to test these hypotheses by examining the recognition abilities of a single case (A.S.), by using stimuli that were "unusual" only because of picture-plane misorientation. A.S. showed a recognition deficit in which his accuracy was proportional to the extent of

Stereopsis measured by random-dot patterns--a new clinical test.

Comparative measures are presented of stereo-acuity by random-dot stereograms using a phase difference haploscope and a Titmus stereogram. Using two groups of fifteen subjects each, one with full binocular vision and the other of small-angle strabismic amblyopes, greater discrimination between subject groups was found with the random-dot stereograms. It is concluded that random-dot stereograms produced by crossed Polaroid would be a more effective clinical means of determining stereo-acuity.

The Extent of Task Specificity for Visual and Tactile Sequences in the Auditory Cortex of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

It has been proposed that the auditory cortex in the deaf humans might undergo task-specific reorganization. However, evidence remains scarce as previous experiments used only two very specific tasks (temporal processing and face perception) in visual modality. Here, congenitally deaf/hard of hearing and hearing women and men were enrolled in an fMRI experiment as we sought to fill this evidence gap in two ways. First, we compared activation evoked by a temporal processing task performed in two different modalities, visual and tactile. Second, we contrasted this task with a perceptually simila
