The number of Trichophyton quinckeanum infections has increased significantly in recent years. In 2020 in particular, the number of cases in … o other zoophilic mycoses. Typical clinical manifestations of the infections are tinea corporis and tinea capitis. Treatment of T. quinckeanum infections is similar to other dermatophyte infections, depending on the severity, location and age of the patient as well as the immune status, previous illnesses and medication. Treatment of superficial fungal infections has come a long way. This has, in part, been through the development and evaluation of new drugs. However, utilising new strategies, such as identifying variation between different species in responsiveness, e.g., in tinea capitis, as well as seeking better ways of ensuring adequate concentrations of drug in the skin or nail, and combining different treatment methods, have played equally important roles in ensuring steady improvements in the results of treatment. Yet there are still areas where we look for improvement, such as better remission and cur…

Alopecia in childhood is a source of high concern, frustration, and anxiety. Delineating types of alopecia and those that are chronic or potentially related to underlying medical problems is important. There are 5 common types of hair loss in children: alopecia related to tinea capitis, alopecia areata spectrum/autoimmune alopecia, traction alopecia, telogen effluvium, and trichotillomania/trichotillosis. Hair-cycle anomalies including loose anagen syndrome can lead to sparse-appearing hair. Rarer reasons for alopecia in children include pressure-induced alopecia, alopecia related to nutrition…

Adult tinea capitis, especially kerion, caused by Trichophyton tonsurans is relatively rare in China. Here, we report a case caused by the agent in an old woman with normal immune function. Fungal microscopic examination and culture were positive. The isolate was further identified as Trichophyton tonsurans by internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing. Skin biopsy and histopathological examination suggested diffuse inflammatory cell infiltration in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Notably, fungal spores were observed within the dermis by Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining. After eight w…

We recorded the diagnosis made in 461 black patients (187 children and 274 adults) attending a dermatology clinic between January and March 1996. In the childhood population, atopic eczema and tinea capitis were the most frequent dermatoses, comprising 63% of diagnoses recorded. In the adult population, acne and acne keloidalis nuchae were seen most frequently. Other conditions observed commonly were eczema, psoriasis, keloid scarring, pityriasis versicolor and postinflammatory changes. Our study demonstrates a wide spectrum of skin disease and includes disorders more common in black skin, dis…

Fungal infections of the skin and nails are a common global problem. The high prevalence of superficial mycotic infections shows that 20-25% … is likely to be caused by the anthropophilic germ T. rubrum. In poorer countries, scalp infections (tinea capitis) caused by T. soudanense or M. audouinii are more prevalent. This review summarises current epidemiological trends for fungal infections and focuses on dermatomycosis of glabrous skin on different continents.

Dermatophytoses are fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails that affect approximately 25% of the global population. Occlusive clothing, living in a hot humid environment, poor hygiene, proximity to animals, and crowded living conditions are important risk factors. Dermatophyte infections are named for the anatomic area they infect, and include tinea corporis, cruris, capitis, barbae, faciei, pedis, and manuum. Tinea incognito describes steroid-modified tinea. In some patients, especially those who are immunosuppressed or who have a history of corticosteroid use, dermatophyte infections

Microsporum gypseum is a keratinophilic fungi grouped under dermatophytes infecting skin, hair and nail portions in human and animals causing tinea corporis, tinea facei and tinea capitis. As both human and fungi are eukaryotes, the available drugs for treating dermatophytes produce some side effects due to drug interaction with human also. Apart from this, the gut microbiota has a very big role in the health of human which should not be affected by the drugs. Hence this study focused on finding a target which is unique and essential to M. gypseum and non-homologous to human and gut microbiota…

Topical antifungal agents are generally used for the treatment of superficial fungal infections unless the infection is widespread, involves an extensive area, or is resistant to initial therapy. Systemic antifungals are often reserved for the treatment of onychomycosis, tinea capitis, superficial and systemic candidiasis, and prophylaxis and treatment of invasive fungal infections. With the development of resistant fungi strains and the increased incidence of life-threatening invasive fungal infections in immunocompromised patients, some previously effective traditional antifungal agents are …

Under specific light illumination, particularly ultraviolet (UV) and near-UV light stimulation, the skin produces both specular light reflectance and, possibly, specific fluorescent emission. These properties offer diagnostic clues and disclose some peculiar functions of the skin. A series of superficial infections (erythrasma, some tinea capitis types, tinea/pityriasis versicolor, dermatophytoses, etc.) and pilosebaceous follicles enriched in Propionibacterium spp show fluorescence. This latter characteristic is downgraded or lost while on some anti-acne treatments. A quenching effect of fluo…
