Evaluation of the Normal Airway Morphology Using Optical Coherence Tomography.

BACKGROUND: The anatomic location of small airways, the distribution of airway cartilage, and their correlation with ageing have not been well elucidated. The objective of this article was to explore the morphologic characteristics of small airways in vivo, and how airway structural changes correlate with age using endobronchial optical coherence tomography (EB-OCT). METHODS: We recruited 112 subjects with peripheral pulmonary nodules. Participants underwent CT scan, spirometry, and EB-OCT measurements. We measured the airway internal diameter, the inner area (Ai), the airway wall area percen

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Highlights Chorioretinal Lesions in Ocular Coccidioidomycosis.

A 34-year-old woman presented after recovering from a disseminated Coccidioides immitis infection of the lungs, blood, brain, and placenta. The patient was asymptomatic for visual complaints. Visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. Fundus examination demonstrated bilateral chorioretinal infiltrates worse in the left eye. Fluorescein angiography (FA) was unable to be performed as the patient was breastfeeding, prompting the use of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) imaging to further investigate the infiltrates. OCTA imaging was able to detect all visualized chorioretinal infiltrates

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) study in Argentinean Huntington's disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is a genetic, rare and progressive neurodegenerative disorder that causes motor and cognitive impairment in midlife patients. Although retinal damage was observed in animal HD models and in patients with other neurodegenerative diseases, we still need confirmation of impairment in HD patients. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive methodology that analyses the retinal nerve fibre layers (RNFL) and could reflect processes of neurodegeneration. METHODS: A cross-sectional study with 14 HD patients who underwent a spectral domain OCT. Results w

[Optical Coherence Tomography in Disorders of the Central Nervous System].

Retinal changes and visual symptoms are present in several inflammatory, degenerative and tumorous disorders of the central nervous system (CNS). Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a method that can be used in clinical practice to detect and quantify the structural correlates of these visual symptoms in neurological disorders. OCT is a non-invasive imaging technique, based on interferometry, which can create high-resolution images of the retina and measure the thickness and volume of the different retinal layers. The combined ganglion cell- and inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) and the peripapi

Bilateral congenital macular coloboma: Swept-source optical coherence tomography findings.

A 15-year-old male presented with decreased vision and nystagmus from childhood. Best-corrected visual acuity was limited to 0,05/10 in both eyes. Fundus examination revealed a well-demarcated macular excavation of 2 discs diameter, baring of the underlying sclera, surrounded by a pigmented rim and hypopigmented retinal areas. Autofluorescence images showed a central hypoautofluorescent lesion with patchy hypoautofluorescent areas corresponding to retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor atrophy. Swept-source optical coherence tomography showed a crater-like depression with atrophy

Suction blister lesions and epithelialization monitored by optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Our objective was to assess epithelialization of suction blister lesions by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and benchmark it to histology using epidermal thickness (ET) as the primary outcome. METHODS: Thirty-two healthy volunteers were recruited to Study 1 and 2. One 10-mm suction blister was raised on each buttock, and the blister roof was excised. Lesions were covered with moisture-retaining dressing. In Study 1, the lesions were OCT-scanned on day 0 (D0), D2 and D4 and excised for histological examination. In Study 2, the progress of epithelialization and skin barri

Optical Coherence Tomography in Alzheimer's Disease and Other Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Over the past decade, a surge of evidence has documented various pathological processes in the retina of patients suffering from mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and other neurodegenerative diseases. Numerous studies have shown that the retina, a central nervous system tissue formed as a developmental outgrowth of the brain, is profoundly affected by AD. Harboring the earliest detectable disease-specific signs, amyloid β-protein (Aβ) plaques, the retina of AD patients undergoes substantial ganglion cell degeneration, thinning of the retinal nerve f

Optical coherence tomography impacts the evaluation of visual pathway tumors.

The objective of this systematic literature review is to assess the role of retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the evaluation of patients with tumors of the visual pathway. We performed a PubMed database search according to the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. The search was restricted to articles published in English between 2000 and 2016, with at least 10 human adult participants enrolled. Twenty-seven articles met the eligibility criteria. All studies investigated tumors of the anterior visual pathway. Both time-domain and spec

Renal fluid overload diagnosed by retinal optical coherence tomography scanning.

Fluid overload is one of the major findings in patients with end-stage renal disease. Common findings in fluid overload include shortness of breath, pedal edema, ascites, and pericardial effusion. Rarely, vision loss can be associated with decompensated systemic fluid status. In the following case, we report an unusual case of vision loss due to retinal edema as a result of fluid overload diagnosed and followed to resolution by optical coherence tomography testing.

Optical coherence tomography angiography in dural carotid-cavernous sinus fistula.

BACKGROUND: Recently, applications of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) have been limited to the retina and posterior segment. Although early studies have described its use for other clinical applications, its role in anterior segment vasculature and optic disc imaging has been limited thus far. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a novel clinical application of OCTA in a patient with dural carotid-cavernous sinus fistula (CCF), which was complicated by increased intra-ocular pressure (IOP). In this case report, we used the OCTA to delineate increased epsicleral venous flow in the af
