Intraradicular reinforcement for traumatized immature teeth.

Immature necrotic teeth after trauma pose both endodontic and restorative challenges because of incomplete closure of the apex, and thin and weakened dentinal walls that make them prone to fracture. The use of light-transmitting plastic posts, in combination with adhesive materials, enable intraradicular reinforcement of flared canals, helping to rehabilitate fractured immature teeth and maintain a functional unit within the dental arch. The purpose of this paper is to present the case of a nine-year-old patient who had a complicated fracture of an immature anterior tooth, which was endodontic

Lack of periradicular healing and gradually increasing swelling two years after intentional extrusion of calcium hydroxide into periapical lesion: report of a case.

A 40-year-old female patient with noncontributory medical history presented to the postgraduate clinic of the Department of Endodontology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Her chief complaint was a gradually increasing swelling in the left side of her maxilla, during the preceding 2 months. After clinical examination, the radiologic and computerized tomographic scan examinations revealed the presence of a radiopaque foreign material in contact with the apex of tooth #22, confined within the limits of a radiolucent area. On dental anamnesis and after communication with her dentist,

Treatment of Retrograde Peri-Implantitis Originating From Apical Periodontitis of an Adjacent Tooth: A Clinical Case Letter.

This report aims to present a treatment of retrograde peri-implantitis originating from apical periodontitis of an adjacent tooth in an 84-year-old male. Apical periodontitis of the maxillary left central incisor (#9) extended to the apex of the maxillary left lateral incisor implant (#10), which had been functioning for 16 years. Root canal treatment for #9 was performed, followed by root end surgery to treat the apical periodontitis, which showed a periapical radiolucency measured 1 cm in its greatest dimension. After the root end filling was placed, neither bone substitute materials nor bar

Root Canal Filling after Revascularization/Revitalization.

INTRODUCTION: Revascularization/revitalization therapy is considered an alternative procedure for management of teeth with an immature apex and necrotic pulp, mainly when root development is interrupted in the early phases of formation. However, this clinical treatment protocol should be considered a permanent procedure? METHOD: A maxillary central incisor with a previous and successful RR treatment was intentionally filled with a biocompatible material with the periapical tissues due to the patient's lack of adherence to the follow-up protocol. RESULTS: The 20-month follow-up showed absence

Variation in morphology of the maxillary central incisors found in class II, division 2 malocclusions.

Class II, Division 2 malocclusions show several common characteristics. One of the features is the presence of a deep overbite ("deckbiss"), which can be the result of an excessive eruption of the maxillary central incisors. This study tested the theory that the deep overbite, together with the apparent entrapment of the mandible, may be partly due to the bending of the maxillary central incisors or the presence of the Collum angle. In a comparison between the group of patients with Class II. Division 2 malocclusions and the control group, it was determined that the former group exhibited sign

Surgical-anatomical evaluation of mandibular premolars by CBCT among the Italian population.

BACKGROUND: The thorough knowledge of the anatomy of mandibular premolars is an essential factor for a correct approach to endodontic treatment, concerning both non-surgical and surgical treatment. OBJECTIVES: Since there is no data on the Italian population in this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate, from a surgical perspective, the anatomy of mandibular premolars among the Italian population through a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis, considering the morphology of their root canals according to Vertucci's classification and the prospect of their apices with regard t

3D digital analysis of tooth movement with magnets and elastics in vitro.

OBJECTIVES: Magnets have many advantages in orthodontics, and our previous studies confirmed their therapeutic potential through 3D-data analysis. The aim of this study was to compare tooth movements, including rotation, obtained via magnetic and elastic forces in crowded cases in vitro. METHODS: Typodont models mimicking a crowded case were prepared. In the magnetic force-driven orthodontics (MG) group, Nd-Fe-B magnets were attached to the labial surfaces from UR4 to UL4 for attracting force, and to UR6 and UL6 for repulsing force. For the elastic force-driven orthodontic (EL) group, bracket

Maxillary lateral incisor implants: planning with the aid of orthodontics.

Implants are commonly used to replace congenitally missing lateral incisors in adolescent orthodontic patients. However, these restorations are often challenging for the orthodontist, surgeon, and restorative dentist. In some patients the space across the alveolar crest is too narrow to permit the surgeon to place the implant. Occasionally the root apices of the adjacent central incisor and canine are in close proximity. In other cases the ridge thickness could be inadequate and require augmentation. When the orthodontist opens the space, the papilla heights are adversely affected. Some adoles

Alveolar bone changes after tooth-borne surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion: A three-dimensional study.

INTRODUCTION: Surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) with a dental-anchorage appliance can induce dental and skeletal complications adjacent to the teeth supporting the device. The purpose of this study was to quantify the dentoskeletal changes observed after SARME using a tooth-borne device. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cone beam CT images from 39 patients were compared between the preoperative (T1) and the postoperative period (T2). The mean time to complete the second imaging was 13.8 ± 6.9 months after the SARME. Dental and bone parameters were assessed: the vestibular bone heigh

Tomographic evaluation of apexogenesis with human treated dentin matrix in young permanent molars: a split-mouth randomized controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The concept of vital pulp therapy (VPT) of immature permanent teeth has evolved in recent years. There has been a great tendency towards investigating new pulp capping materials for perfect imitation for natural dentin-pulp complex formation process and restoring the normal tissue's characteristics. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the clinical and tomographic outcomes of apexogenesis with human treated dentin matrix (hTDM) compared to mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 40 bilateral deep carious young mandibular first permanent molars (FPMs) in 20 health

Evaluation of the use of a clinical practice guideline for external apical root resorption among orthodontists.

BACKGROUND: External apical root resorption (EARR) is a frequently observed adverse event in patients undergoing fixed appliance therapy. Assessing the patients' risk during treatment is important, as certain factors are assumed to be associated with an increased likelihood of occurrence. However, their predictive value remains limited, making evidence-based clinical decision-making challenging for orthodontists. To address this issue, the Dutch Association of Orthodontists (NvVO) developed a clinical practice guideline (CPG) for EARR in accordance with the AGREE II instrument (Appraisal of Gu

Accuracy of Different Apex Locators in Teeth with Simulated Apical Root Resorption: an In Vitro Study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate working length (WL) determination is necessary in achieving optimal healing by non-surgical root canal therapy in teeth with inflammatory apical root resorption. Electronic apex locators (EALs) are one of the mainstays in determination of WL of teeth. AIM: This study evaluated the accuracy of three EALs [RootZX (third generation), iPex (fourth generation) and Raypex 6 (modification of a fifth generation)] in determining the WL of teeth with simulated apical root resorption in permanent teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty freshly extracted maxillary anterior teeth were co

Increased width of the apical periodontal membrane space in endodontically treated teeth may represent favourable healing.

AIM: To examine cases showing increased width of the periodontal space (IW) at a long-term follow-up examination and to determine whether this finding could be explained by endodontic or nonendodontic factors. METHODOLOGY: A series of intraoral radiographs was obtained from 131 patients 20-27 years after root canal treatment. The same individuals had been examined 10 years earlier, and radiographs taken immediately after treatment were also available. Fourteen roots (5.6%) demonstrated increased width of the apical periodontal space at the end of the study period. These were subjected to furt
