UNLABELLED: Pathological tooth wear is an escalating social problem. Occlusal veneers can be an alternative to traditional prosthetic restorations such as crowns, inlays, and onlays.
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to assess the fracture resistance of occlusal veneers made of various materials depending on their thickness.
METHODS: In total, 120 occlusal veneers were examined. The restorations were made of four ceramics: leucite LC (IPS Empress Esthetic), hybrid HC (Vita Enamic), lithium disilicate LDC (IPS e.max Press), and zirconium oxide ZOC (Ceramill Zolid HT). A total of 30 veneers

Background Dental caries in primary dentition requires restorative materials that combine durability, strength, and therapeutic properties. Glass ionomer cements (GICs) are widely used, but their lack of stability sometimes limits their application. Cention N (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), an alkasite restorative material (ARM), is an attractive option due to its greater mechanical strength and ion-releasing capacity compared to GIC. The objective of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of Cention N versus a high-viscosity GIC (Fuji IX, GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) in p

The retrospective examination of 70 patients who had suffered fractures in tooth-bearing segments of the maxilla and the mandible when they were between one and twelve years old revealed a high incidence of late pathologic changes (in 39 out of 70). Disorders in odontogeny, eruption of the teeth and occlusion were observed. Primary and secondary loss of teeth did also occur. Our results show the necessity to inform both the young patients and their parents about the high incidence of late changes after jaw fractures in childhood. An effective recall-system is required in order to diagnose and

CONTEXT: Understanding tooth biomechanics is essential for creating effective and durable dental restorations. While intact teeth are inherently resilient, cavity preparation compromises structural integrity, increasing fracture risk.
AIMS: This study utilized finite element analysis (FEA), the dominant in silico method for biomechanical investigation, to evaluate how cavity size influences stress and strain distribution in a three-dimensional mandibular molar model derived from micro-computed tomography.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: An FEA simulation was conducted on three tooth models (intact too

The shortened dental arch (SDA) provides a cost-effective dentition, considering the population is ageing and retaining teeth for longer. The aims were to observe the reasons and sites of tooth extraction and assess the functional dentition over 15 years in dental practice. Subjects were recruited who required permanent tooth extractions between 2000 and 2015. The reasons for extractions were chosen from twelve extraction codes. Data were also collected for demographics, tooth position, root treated teeth and functional pairs remaining. Patient-centred factors on reasons for tooth extraction a

In the course of a lifetime the crowns of teeth wear off, cementum thickens and the pulp closes-in or may stiffen. Little is known about how these changes affect the tooth response to load. Using a series of finite element models of teeth attached to the jawbone, and by comparing these to a validated model of a 'young' pig 3-rooted tooth, the effects of these structural changes were studied. Models of altered teeth show a stiffer response to mastication even when material properties used are identical to those found in 'young' teeth. This stiffening response to occlusal loads is mostly caused

BACKGROUND This study aimed to compare the bond strength of orthodontic brackets onto the tooth enamel of 120 freshly extracted adult bovine medial lower incisors using 4 adhesives: a resin-modified glass ionomer adhesive, a composite adhesive, a liquid composite adhesive, and a one-step light-cured adhesive. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study group (120 freshly extracted bovine medial lower incisors) was divided into equal subgroups depending on the type of adhesive used to fix the brackets to the tooth enamel (n=30), and then according to the observation time (n=10). Orthodontic brackets were fi

Mesial-occlusal-distal (MOD) cavity preparations are commonly used to restore damaged teeth. While numerous in vitro cavity designs have been devised and tested, no analytical frameworks for assessing their resistance to fracture seem to exist. This concern is addressed here by resorting to a 2D slice specimen cut from restored molar teeth with rectangular-base MOD cavity. The evolution of damage due to axial cylindrical indentation is followed in situ. The failure begins with a rapid debonding along the tooth/filler interface and continues with unstable cracking from the cavity corner. The de

This study aims to determine whether the design of resin posts reinforced with glass fiber (FRC) and Reporfost (Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil) significantly improves the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth restored through this method.A batch of 30 maxillary monoradicular teeth (15 central incisors, 15 canines) were treated endodontically by step-back technique (apical enlargement 40-K file) sealed with Sealapex (Kerr Corporation, Orange, US) and gutta-percha by lateral condensation, cold. They were divided into two equal groups, prepared for cementing the FRC posts. The Exacto

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the fracture behavior of a mandibular first premolar with a severely curved h-shaped canal using the extended finite element method.
METHODS: Following the micro-computed tomographic data, models of the intact tooth, the conservative endodontic cavity (CEC), the modified conservative endodontic cavity (MCEC), and the traditional endodontic cavity (TEC) were created. All models were subjected with a total load of 600 N perpendicularly to the contact areas. The distributions of maximum principal stress were recorded. The evolution of cracks in the e

The management of traumatically intruded permanent incisors is controversial. Some authors suggest a decreased incidence of ankylosis in cases treated with orthodontic extrusion. The purpose of this study was to examine two common management techniques for traumatic intrusion, orthodontic extrusion, and observation for re-eruption. The four first premolars of three shepherd dogs were traumatically intruded with a mallet while a holding device was used to prevent tooth fracture. Five to 7 days following the injury, orthodontic force was applied unilaterally while the contralateral tooth served

As every surgical procedure extraction of third molars can result in several complications, among them the mandibular angle fracture. Predisposing factors for fracture should be analyzed during and after the surgery. This paper aims to discuss the predisposing factors to the occurrence of mandibular angle fractures during and after the procedure for third molars extraction, as well as surgical principles to avoid this complication.

INTRODUCTION: Cemental tears have been described as specific types of root surface fractures that are seen infrequently but can cause rapid collapse of the periodontal tissue. However, to the best of the authors' knowledge, cases of cemental tears in autotransplanted teeth and their recovery by autotransplantation have not been reported previously. This case report presents the clinical and histopathologic features of a rare case of a cemental tear that occurred on an autotransplanted tooth. This meant a total long-term treatment course of 20 years involving two separate treatment procedures.

Internal resorption is usually asymptomatic. Large resorption defects may result in penetration of the root dentin leading to perforation. In this case report, we describe the diagnosis and nonsurgical repair of a large resorptive lesion with multiple perforations in a mandibular first molar using cone-beam computed tomographic technology. The 3 different root perforations were located in the mesial root and repaired using Biodentine (Septodont, Saint-Maur des Fossés, France). The mesial root weakened from resorption was reinforced by replacing the lost root dentin with calcium silicate-based

Iatrogenic mandible fractures are rare complications from third molar removal surgeries. While most documented cases stress risk factors inherent to the patient and tooth presentation in fractures' etiology, appreciation of the risk factors underlying the practitioner's skills is scarce. Here, we describe an intraoperative fracture in a healthy 26-year-old female resulting from an incompatible surgical technique during the right mandibular third molar removal. The patient showed facial swelling, pain, malocclusion, and significant mobility of the fractured segment. The surgical management invo
