1. Amounts of KCN of 0.2, 1.0 and 2.0 X 10(-11) mol in a probe do not prevent the uptake of transferrin iron from lactating mouse mammary gland cells. 2. The effect of 5, 10 and 100 X 10(-11) mol in a probe 2,4-dinitrophenol dissolved in 20% ethanol is also negative on the iron-transferrin uptake from the cell. 3. There is a statistically significant decrease of uptake of transferrin-iron under the influence of 20% ethanol in the incubation mixture (25, 50 and 100 microliters). The effect of ethanol is diminished by 2,4-dinitrophenol in the solution. 4. The uptake of 59Fe-transferrin from cell

In order to determine the nutritional effects of BCAA compositions in the treatment of cancerous hypoproteinemia, the appropriate ratio of I-leu: Leu: Val and the proportion of BCAA to Total Amino Acids were investigated. As for results, indices such as the serum albumin, the RBP and N-balance quickly recovered to normal levels when the ratio of I-leu: Leu: Val was 1.0:1.8:1.0 and the proportion o BCAA to TAA was 31%. These composition thus may be suitable for the treatment of cancerous hypoproteinemia.

Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and anemia are both public health nutrition concerns. An association between VDD and anemia has been suggested in various healthy and diseased populations. The current study aimed to elucidate the effect of VDD on iron status in children with type I diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The study recruited two groups of children with T1DM: control group comprised of 38 T1DM children with sufficient vitamin D (> 30 ng/ml) and a case group, consisted of 52 T1DM children with VDD (< 20 ng/ml). Both groups had comparable gender, age, BMI, and disease duration. The laboratory measure

The Access(®) soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) is considered the world's first automated chemiluminescence immunoassay. In this study, the diagnostic utility of this and other tests for serum iron were evaluated by studying their interrelationships with inflammation. A total of 367 patients with anemia (iron deficiency anemia [IDA], 157; anemia of chronic disease [ACD], 210) and 80 normal controls were subjected to a battery of diagnostic tests, including complete blood cell count, serum iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), ferritin, sTfR, and hepcidin. BACKGROUND: Therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) show great promise for treating neurological disorders thanks to their high selectivity and potency. However, their clinical potential is significantly limited by poor penetration across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). It has been shown that antibodies targeting transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) can reach the brain after peripheral administration. In addition, human H-ferritin (HFn) naturally undergoes TfR1-mediated transcytosis, making it a compelling alternative candidate platform for brain-directed drug delivery. This study evaluates the feasi

Anemia has been identified as a severe public health concern among young children in India, however, information on the prevalence of anemia attributed to micronutrient deficiencies is lacking. We aimed to assess multiple micronutrient status (iron, zinc, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin D, folate and vitamin B12) in young Indian children and to investigate the role of these seven micronutrients and other non-nutritional factors on hemoglobin concentrations and anemia. One-hundred and twenty children aged 12 to 23 months were included in a cross-sectional nutritional assessment survey, of which 77

Ferroptosis is closely associated with fluoride-induced liver injury. As a natural flavonoid with potent anti-ferroptotic activity, quercetin (Que) could mitigate fluoride-triggered hepatotoxicity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of Que against sodium fluoride (NaF)-induced ferroptosis and to elucidate its molecular mechanisms. In vivo data demonstrated that Que restored liver function, ameliorated hepatic pathological lesions, and alleviated mitochondrial damage in NaF-exposed mice. Additionally, Que suppressed NaF-induced apoptosis and inflammation.

PURPOSE: Depression is associated with low-grade systemic inflammation and impaired intestinal function, both of which may reduce dietary iron absorption. Low iron status has been associated with depression in adults and adolescents. In Swiss adolescents, we determined the associations between paediatric major depressive disorder (pMDD), inflammation, intestinal permeability and iron status.
METHODS: This is a matched case-control study in 95 adolescents with diagnosed pMDD and 95 healthy controls aged 13-17 years. We assessed depression severity using the Children's Depression Rating Scale-R

Tongue-rolling behavior (TR) is commonly observed in dairy cows and is considered a stereotypic behavior indicative of compromised welfare. Chronic stress can impair lactation and immune function, yet the interaction between behavior (TR vs. normal behavior (NB)) and chronic stress (high vs. low) remains unclear. In this study, hair cortisol concentration (HCC) was used to assess stress levels in cows. The cows were first classified into high- and low-stress cows using K-means clustering. Subsequently, cows exhibiting high levels of TR and those exhibiting NB (i.e., no stereotypic behaviors) w

The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) is widely used in monitoring disease progression, evaluating treatment efficacy, and predicting outcomes across diverse diseases. Yet, its roles in iron deficiency (ID) remains unclear. This investigation aims to explore the association between SII and ID in 20-80 years old individuals which can accurately represent the people's health status in the United States. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 4,075 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES) participants. The relationship between SII (SII = platelet counts × neutrophil

ICF (immunodeficiency, centromeric region instability and facial anomalies) is a recessive disease caused by mutations in the DNA methyltransferase 3B gene (DNMT3B). Patients have immunodeficiency, chromosome 1 (Chr1) and Chr16 pericentromeric anomalies in mitogen-stimulated lymphocytes, a small decrease in overall genomic 5-methylcytosine levels and much hypomethylation of Chr1 and Chr16 juxtacentromeric heterochromatin. Microarray expression analysis was done on B-cell lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) from ICF patients with diverse DNMT3B mutations and on control LCLs using oligonucleotide a

BACKGROUND: Recently, 89Zr-immuno-PET imaging of therapeutic antibodies, actively transported over the blood-brain-barrier via transferrin-mediated transcytosis, was demonstrated using the chelator DFO*. In these studies, aducanumab targeting amyloid-beta was fused with a transferrin binding unit: a single-chain Fab fragment derived from 8D3 (scFab8D3). Alpha-synuclein is a hallmark protein of several neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's Disease, Lewy-Body-Dementia, and Multiple System Atrophy. 89Zr-immuno-PET imaging of alpha-synuclein can be a valuable tool for image-guided drug de
