Fasciolopsis buski is the largest intestinal fluke infecting human beings. This trematode is endemic in certain parts of the country. Migration poses the risk of spread of the worm to other parts of the country. We report fasciolopsis buski in a migrant from Bihar working in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Acute kidney injury following intestinal obstruction occurred in this case which was never described before.

Paragonimiasis is a zoonotic, food-borne trematode infection that affects 21 million people globally. Trematodes interact with their hosts via extracellular vesicles (EV) that carry protein and RNA cargo. We analyzed EV in excretory-secretory products (ESP) released by Paragonimus kellicotti adult worms cultured in vitro (EV ESP) and EV isolated from lung cyst fluid (EV CFP) recovered from infected gerbils. The majority of EV were approximately 30-50 nm in diameter. We identified 548 P. kellicotti-derived proteins in EV ESP by mass spectrometry and 8 proteins in EV CFP of which 7 were also pre

Freshwater snails of the genus Biomphalaria serve as obligatory hosts for the digenetic trematode Schistosoma mansoni, the causative agent for the most widespread form of intestinal schistosomiasis. Within Biomphalaria, S. mansoni larvae multiply and transform into the cercariae form that can infect humans. Trematode development and proliferation is thought to be facilitated by modifications of host behavior and physiological processes, including a reduction of reproduction known as "parasitic castration." As neuropeptides participate in the control of reproduction across phylogeny, a neural t

Fasciolosis is a chronic parasitic disease caused by two species of liver trematodes, Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica, which infest ruminants and rarely humans. The disease is spread all over the world, but more common in Asia in areas with extensive livestock farming and can be imported cases in Europe and America. In this case, we describe imported infection with F. hepatica in Bulgaria from 11-year-old Syrian immigrant boy.

The effect of reservoir construction on medically important parasites is well known worldwide but lacks information in Vietnam. With 385 active hydropower plants and numerous water reservoirs, Vietnam provides an ideal setting for studying this issue. This study investigated trematode infection in snail first intermediate hosts from three hydropower reservoirs: Hoa Binh, Son La, and Thac Ba. In total, 25,299 snails representing 16 species were examined, with 959 individuals (8 species) shedding identifiable cercariae. Infection prevalence was highest in thiarid snails (5.4%-15.4%), followed by

Sirenians are parasitized by a number of nematodes and trematodes, most which appear to be host specific. Reports of parasitism in the West Indian Manatee, Trichechus manatus, exist for several regions within the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea, but there is a lack of parasitic data existing for the manatee subspecies living in the coastal waters of Belize. Herein, we report the first published record of parasites found in a deceased adult male Antillean manatee, Trichechus manatus manatus, recovered in the Placencia Lagoon, Belize. A thorough necropsy was performed w

Paragonimiasis is a parasite infection caused by several species of Paragonimus, a trematode that is transmitted through the consumption of raw or undercooked crabs and that has been found in the subtropical areas of America, Asia and Africa. This infection mainly affects the lungs, causing clinical and radiological manifestations very similar to pulmonary tuberculosis, so it should always be included in the differential diagnosis. We present the case of a 7-year-old school patient, hospitalized with the diagnosis of pulmonary paragonimiasis, who had a favorable evolution after receiving treat

Parasitic infections of the lung occur worldwide among both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients and may affect the respiratory system in a variety of ways. This review provides an update on the presenting symptoms, signs, investigation and management of diseases affecting the lung caused by protozoa, nematodes and trematodes. The clinical presentations and radiographic findings of several of these diseases may mimic tuberculosis and malignancy. It is important to consider parasitic infections in the differential diagnosis of such lung diseases. If identified early, most parasitic di

Dicroceliasis is an unusual zoonotic trematode infection caused by the lancet liver fluke, Dicrocoelium dendriticum. Grazing herbivores (usually sheep or cattle) are the definitive hosts. The life cycle proceeds through two intermediate hosts: the land snail and the field ant. Human infection is acquired by consuming the field ant. This case report describes a human immunodeficiency virus-seropositive patient who presumably acquired this parasite from bottled water contaminated with ants. A brief discussion of the parasitology, pathology, clinical findings and treatment is presented.

Schistosomiasis is a trematode infection rarely diagnosed in the United States. Intestinal involvement is common with chronic infection and causes abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, hematochezia, and polyp formation. Chronic, disseminated infection can affect the intestines causing the aforementioned symptoms, but reports of intestinal polyps are rare. Most cases are inflammatory fibrous polyps in the colon. There are very few cases reported in the literature of hamartomatous polyps arising in the small intestine. We present the rare case of a U.S.-born, 35-year-old woman diagnosed with

The foodborne liver trematode Opisthorchis felineus (Rivolta, 1884) is a member of the triad of phylogenetically related epidemiologically important Opisthorchiidae trematodes, which also includes O. viverrini (Poirier, 1886) and Clonorchis sinensis (Loos, 1907). Despite similarity in the life cycle, Opisthorchiidae liver flukes also have marked differences. Two species (O. viverrini and C. sinensis) are recognized as Group 1A biological carcinogens, whereas O. felineus belongs to Group 3A. In this review, we focus on these questions: Are there actual differences in carcinogenicity among these

The growth of knowledge and research practices in any discipline is characterised by a trade-off between depth and breadth: we can either invest efforts to learn a little about many things, or learn a lot about few things. In parasitology, breadth of knowledge corresponds to research on biodiversity and taxonomy: the discovery and description of an increasing number of new species. In contrast, depth of knowledge comes from focused research on a few model species, about which we accumulate much detailed information. Breadth and depth of knowledge are equally important for progress in parasitol

Investigations into the digenean trematode fauna of southern African marine fishes revealed representatives of three families of the superfamily Lepocreadioidea Odhner, 1905. A new taxon, requiring the proposal of a new genus, Cutmoreia galjoen n. gen. et n. sp., is described from the intestine of the galjoen, Dichistius capensis (Cuvier) (Dichistiidae), collected from off the shore between Langstrand and Swakopmund, Namibia. A combination of morphology and molecular sequence data place this taxon in the Lepidapedidae Yamaguti, 1958, representing the first member of this family to be recorded

Paramphistomiasis, a neglected infectious disease affecting ruminants, leads to significant productivity losses. The limitations of current antitrematodal agents and emerging anthelmintic resistance highlight the need for alternative treatments, including those derived from medicinal plants. Pharmacological screening plays a crucial role in the discovery and development of natural products for antiparamphistomiasis. This scoping review summarises the methodological aspects used in pharmacological screening studies of medicinal plants for antiparamphistomiasis. Eligible studies included origina

A new species of trematode of anaporrhutine gorgoderid, from the gill chambers of the Munda round ray Urotrygon munda in Costa Rica is described, based on an integrative taxonomic approach that includes the use of light and scanning electron microscopy, ITS2 and 28S rDNA sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. Anaporrhutum mundae sp. nov. can be distinguished from congeneric species by a combination of morphological traits and particularly by having the genital pore opening at the level of the intestinal bifurcation. The new species also can be distinguished from all other species of Anaporrhut
