The Parotid gland is rarely involved in tuberculosis, even in endemic countries. We report a case of a 26 year-old woman with no medical history, who presented with a swelling of the parotid lodge. Pathology performed after surgery found a tuberculous parotitis, and the patient received anti-tuberculous regimen with a satisfactory evolution. We discuss both diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for this infection.

BACKGROUND: Sialendoscopy can be followed by swelling and infection of the salivary gland. A possible pathomechanism is damage of the deeper salivary duct system by intraductal pressure generated by the irrigation fluid.

BACKGROUND: We describe a case of Kaposi's sarcoma that developed in a renal transplant recipient as early as 5 months after the transplant.
METHOD: The Kaposi's sarcoma evolved in an aggressive manner, involving the oral mucosa, the cervical and mediastinal lymph nodes, the gastrointestinal tract, and possibly the lung. Histological features of tuberculosis were also detected incidentally on an excisional biopsy of the lymph node. The patient was given 12 months of antituberculous chemotherapy. At the same time, immunosuppression was gradually tapered over a 2- to 3-week period.

Among 61 patients with AIDS seen in our hospital from February 1986 to June 1992, 38 (62%) had significant weight loss, 34 (56%) had fever of more than a month and 19 (31%) had chronic diarrhoea; 43 (70%) patients had at least one of the above symptoms. The diagnosis of thoracic actinomycosis is readily made when the patient presents with the constellation of poor oral hygiene, pulmonary infiltrates, empyema, sinus tracts, and osteomyelitis of the ribs. However, in the absence of rib and chest wall involvement, the disease may be overlooked. Three cases of primary pulmonary actinomycosis are presented showing three different pulmonary forms of the disease and comprising (a) subacute patchy pulmonary infiltrates, (b) a cavitary lesion simulating tuberculosis, and (c) a central mass lesion simulating bronchogenic carcinoma.
