[Tuberculosis of respiratory organs concomitant with tuberculosis of bones and joints in young children].

Specific features of thoracic tuberculosis were studied in children with various forms of tuberculosis of bones and joints, i.e. tuberculous spondylitis, arthritis and osteitis. Peculiarities of the clinical course and of complications of thoracic tuberculosis were detected in children with the mentioned clinical forms, which are mostly pronounced in spinal tuberculosis and tuberculosis of joints. A complicated course of thoracic process predetermines the duration of treatment and affects the choice of time for surgical intervention.

Improvement in clinical outcome and infection control using molecular diagnostic techniques for early detection of MDR tuberculous spondylitis: a multicenter retrospective study.

There has been limited research on the therapeutic efficacy of molecular diagnosis of spinal tuberculosis. We attempted to determine whether the utilization of molecular diagnosis to detect multidrug-resistant spinal tuberculosis can improve clinical outcomes. A multicenter retrospective study was conducted from February 2009 to June 2015. Ninety-two consecutive culture-confirmed multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients with spinal tuberculosis who were diagnosed clinically and by imaging were enrolled in the study. The initial time to treatment for MDR-TB, the method of infection co

Possible tuberculous meningitis presenting with predominant voiding dysfunction in an elderly patient: A case report.

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) typically presents with neurological symptoms. Voiding dysfunction in TBM is usually attributed to spinal cord involvement. We report a rare case of possible TBM co-existing with possible prostatic tuberculosis, presenting primarily with urinary symptoms in the absence of spinal pathology. A 69-year-old male presented with a two-year history of progressive urinary retention, urgency, and frequency. Initial management for benign prostatic hyperplasia was ineffective. He subsequently developed fever, headache, and dizziness. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis reveale

Paralytic ileus in the patient with tuberculosis of spine.

Background: We reported a patient with spinal tuberculosis and paralytic ileus. A 56-year-old Javanese male presented with lower limb paralysis and bowel obstruction 2 weeks prior to admission. He was found to have hypoalbuminemia and hypesthesia from the T7/T9 levels and below. Other than increased alanine aminotransferase, hematology and blood chemical tests were normal. MRI and plain abdominal radiographs confirmed the diagnosis of spinal tuberculosis at the T5/6 level and paralytic ileus. Tubercles in the lymphoid tissue of the intestinal submucosa were not seen. Conclusion: Paralytic ileus

Application of Cortical Bone Trajectory Screw for Treating Thoracolumbar and Lumbar Tuberculosis.

The common form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis is spinal tuberculosis (TB). Spinal TB can lead to vertebral damage, resulting in kyphosis and neurological impairment. Debridement, bone grafting, and reconstruction are common surgical treatments for spinal TB. Spinal TB patients with anterior-middle spinal column destruction are more likely to experience loosening of internal fixation. Cortical bone trajectory (CBT) screw fixation reduces this complication probability because the entrance trajectory of CBT screws in the sagittal and axial planes substantially interacts with the cortical bone an

Spinal African histoplasmosis simulating tuberculous spondylitis.

Spinal histoplasmosis is a rare disease condition that must be differentiated from other common inflammatory lesions of the spine such as tuberculosis. A case is presented of a pathologically proven African spinal hisptoplasmosis in a 39-year-old female. Paraplegia and fever were the patient's clinical findings. Cervical plain radiography demonstrated a lytic destructive process of the lower cervical spine with radiographic signs similar to tuberculosis. The surgical management and chemotherapy of histoplasmosis are briefly discussed.

More complications in cervical than in non-cervical spine tuberculosis.

Purpose: Cervical spine tuberculosis (CST) is a rare disease that may lead to severe neurological complications. The goal of the study was to compare the characteristics of patients with CST with those of patients with non-cervical spine tuberculosis (NCST).Methods: Between 1997 and 2016, we reviewed all cases of proven tuberculosis from a cohort of spine infections in a tertiary care hospital. Clinical, biological, and imaging data were collected at baseline and after treatment. Results: Fifty-one cases of spine tuberculosis were included: 14 with CST on imaging (27%) and 37 with no cervical l

Tumors and infections of the growing spine.

The growing spine differs from the adult spine in several ways. Although tumors and infections cause only a small percentage of pediatric back pain incidences, delayed proper diagnosis and treatment may be disastrous. Benign lesions, such as osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, and aneurysmal bone cyst in the spine, are predominant during the first two decades of life, whereas malignant bony spinal tumors are rare. In the pediatric population, malignant spine tumors include osteosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma, lymphoma, and metastatic neuroblastoma. Infections of the growing spine are rare, with the inci

Kyphosis secondary to infectious disease.

Infections of the spine usually involve the vertebral body and therefore by definition produce a kyphosis. Non-tuberculous infection usually staphylococcal and in the lumbar spine, is often diagnosed late and can involve the cord. Open exploration and stabilization with graft should therefore be considered. The destruction is usually less extensive and therefore the kyphosis less severe than in late neglected tuberculous infections. Tuberculous spinal infection accounts for 59% of all orthopedic tuberculosis. It invariably involves vertebral bodies and is progressive. Destruction of the bodies

Elusive tuberculous meningitis with rare neurological complication of longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) is inflammation of the spinal cord that spans three or more spinal segments. LETM is a rare occurrence on its own and has seldom been reported with tuberculous meningitis (TBM), the rarest and deadliest of tuberculous manifestations. TBM is usually seen in children, the immunocompromised, or those with a previous history of tuberculosis infection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old healthy male with no co-morbidities or history of tuberculosis presented with fever and headache for the past 3 months. The patient's Kernig's and Bru

Tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis remains a serious health problem worldwide, particularly affecting the poorest in both high-income and developing countries. It was declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization in 1993. Central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis is caused by mycobacteria belonging to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, and is acquired through inhalation of aerosolized droplet nuclei. Meningitis represents the most frequent and severe form of CNS tuberculosis. Parenchymal CNS involvement can occur in the form of tuberculoma or, more rarely, abscess. Also, damage of the spinal cor

Isolated tuberculosis of posterior elements of spine: magnetic resonance imaging findings in 33 patients.

STUDY DESIGN: Study of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of tuberculosis of spine to determine the incidence and features of isolated tuberculous involvement of the posterior spinal elements. OBJECTIVE: To describe the MRI findings in patients with isolated tuberculous involvement of the posterior spinal elements. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Spinal tuberculosis is more common in the eastern countries than in the western world. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in tuberculosis in the west because of its re-emergence, especially in immunocompromised patients (e.g., HIV). The classic r

Hepatic toxicity in South Indian patients during treatment of tuberculosis with short-course regimens containing isoniazid, rifampicin and pyrazinamide.

Results are presented of the incidence of hepatitis, nearly always with jaundice, among 1686 patients in clinical trials of the treatment of spinal tuberculosis, of tuberculosis meningitis and of pulmonary tuberculosis with short-course regimens containing rifampicin, isoniazid, streptomycin and pyrazinamide. The incidence was high in patients treated with daily regimens of isoniazid and rifampicin: 16-39% in children with tuberculous meningitis, 10% in patients with spinal tuberculosis (non-surgical cases), and 2-8% in those with pulmonary tuberculosis. Hepatitis, in those receiving rifampici

Active tuberculosis of spine: Current updates.

BACKGROUND: Spinal tuberculosis (TB) is the most common extrapulmonary form of tuberculosis. In both developing and developed countries, TB has been on the rising trend due to factors such as increasing HIV coinfection, multidrug resistance of the organism, and global migration. Spinal TB, which most often affects the lower thoracic and thoracolumbar area, accounts for 50% of all musculoskeletal tuberculosis. METHODS: Using the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, EMBASE, and PubMed, a systematic computerized literature search was performed. Analyses of studies published within the past 1

Does computed tomography-guided percutaneous catheter drainage is effective for spinal tuberculous abscess: a midterm results.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. PURPOSE: To evaluate an effectiveness and report a midterm clinical outcome in pain and neurological status in spinal tuberculous abscess after treated by CT-guided percutaneous catheter drainage. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Spinal tuberculosis is one of the destructive forms of tuberculosis infection, which can cause undesirable consequences. The gold standard of surgical treatment of spinal tuberculosis with tuberculous abscess is radical debridement, abscess drainage, and bone grafting of the defect via anterior approach. However, this treatment may l

Paraspinal synovial sarcoma mimicking tuberculosis: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a rare and highly malignant soft tissue sarcoma. When SS occurs in atypical locations, it can present significant diagnostic challenges. We report a case of paraspinal SS initially misdiagnosed as spinal tuberculosis, highlighting the diagnostic difficulties and the importance of considering SS in the differential diagnosis. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 23-year-old woman presented with progressively worsening lower left back pain over 3 weeks, accompanied by weakness and numbness in her left lower limb. She was initially misdiagnosed with spinal tuberculosis at 2 di
