One hundred and eleven (16%) of 701 patients with gastric ulcers, admitted to Kommunehospitalet, Copenhagen, from 1955 to 1964, were 70 years of age of older. Of those elderly patients, 43 were treated surgically, 68 non-surgically. A patient with a progressive Mooren's ulcer of the cornea was successfully treated utilizing a peritomy with limbal conjunctival excision and cryotherapy. The limbal conjunctiva contained a band of IgG beneath the epithelium as well as complement and fibrin in the wall of small blood vessels. This implies Mooren's ulcer is an immune mediated process.

The relationship between chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer was studied in 97 patients, 51 with duodenal ulcer and 46 with gastric ulcer. In the years 1971-1976 five patients with Dieulafoy's ulcer were operated upon succfully in the Innsbruck University Surgical Clinic. A high consumption of alcohol and tobacco was an outstanding feature in the history of all these patients. A case of Curling's ulceration of the duodenum in a child with 50 per cent burns, requiring operative arrest of the bleeding, is reported, and this condition is reviewed. Inquiry among the surgical units treating burns in Great Britian showed that only 18 cases of alimentary bleeding had been seen in the course of treating some 32 500 patients. Direct immunofluorescent techniques demonstrated immunoglobulins localized to the conjunctival epithelium in three cases of Mooren's ulcer. In addition, complement was found in association with the immunoglobulins in the two active cases. Circulating antibodies to the conjunctival and corneal epithelium were demonstrated by indirect immunofluorescent techniques in all three patients. Further immunological examinations of the three cases failed to demonstrate other significant immune alterations.

About 5--10% of the gastric carcinomas develop from a gastric ulcer (ulcerocancer). This process, however, is, referred to gastric ulcers, too rare to indicate a prophylactic resection of the stomach on account of the danger of the development of cancer. Careful diagnostics and following control with X-ray examination and gastroscopy are, however, necessary in every gastric ulcer.
