Female urethra tumours are rare conditions and so the series presented in the literature gathers just a few cases, and therefore is difficult to reach a conclusion with regard to the definite treatment to be adopted in each case. It appears to be certain that even histologically malignant forms of this disease can be cured in the earlier stages. The most representative cases presented in our experience are analyzed and an overall review of the literature is made aiming to examine the experience of various authors with regard to the diagnosis and treatment of the injuries.

A total of 16 patients with posterior urethral ruptures was treated with the aim of reestablishing urethral continuity immediately or early after injury. Followup ranged from 13 to 83 months (average 27). In all patients an emergency retrograde urethrogram demonstrated extravasation from the posterior urethra. Twenty-one patients with traumatic complex urethral obstruction were treated by hydroelectric shock wave (HSW). In the 21 patients, anterior urethral stricture was noted in 3 and posterior urethral obstruction in 18. The length of obstruction was 0.5-6cm. 15 patients were cured by single hydroelectric shock wave, 3 by HSW and electric resection, 2 by HSW with open operation, and 1 failed. The authors report the case of a 26 year old man, in whom recurrent hematuria revealed the diagnosis of urethral condylomata with bladder extension, and HIV serology positive. This case reminds us that it is essential to search for immunodeficiency in every case of extensive or recurrent condylomata. The analysis of such cases in the literature allows discussion of the various clinical courses according to the Human Papilloma Virus types found in condylomatous tissues.

The surgical correction of chordee without hypospadias may be difficult and result in significant intraoperative and postoperative complications, especially when there is an associated hypoplastic type I urethra. Between 1981 and 1985 we treated 13 patients with this condition. Of the cases 9 had a type I urethra, 3 had type II and 1 had type III, according to the Devine-Horton classification. We describe 2 patients with an absent segment of the bulbomembranous urethra, in 1 of whom the defect extended from the triangular ligament to the scrotal area. A simple method to restore continuity is presented, which is applicable to a wide variety of conditions resulting in the absence of a long segment of the bulbomembranous urethra.

In 589 males, 169 with and 420 without urethritis, urethral swabs were taken and assessed semiquantitatively for the sexually transmittable infectious agents Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma hominis, Trichomonas vaginalis and Candida species. Idiopathic female pseudohermaphroditism associated with a vaginal urethra, prominent clitoris and an accessory phallic urethra is a rare syndrome, with no apparent cause to account for the masculinization of the genitalia and exhibit of similar characteristic features. We report such a case and review the pertinent literature.

Hyphema and secondary glaucoma were ocular manifestations of disseminated neoplasia in a 4-year-old dog. The dog was euthanatized following enucleation after disseminated intravascular coagulopathy had developed. The histopathologic diagnosis was transitional cell carcinoma of the urethra, with metastasis to the lungs, heart, adrenal gland, and eyes.

Benign neoplasia of urethra are of frequent by aged women. Epithelial tumours (polyps, papilloms) are distinguished from mesenchymal tumours (fibroms, myoms, angioms) histologically. Dislocations of the mucosa and real malignoms of the urethra are marked off from these. The authors report about the rarity of mesenchymal neoplasia and represent a case by which it comes to retention of urine because of a big leiomyoma. Diagnosis and therapy are described in detail.

An isolate of Chlamydia trachomatis obtained from a man with nongonococcal urethritis was used to produce experimental urethral and pharyngeal infections in chimpanzees. After urethral inoculation of 8 X 10(1) inclusion-forming units (IFU), infections were established in three of three animals; urethral discharges developed in two.
