OBJECTIVE: To examine surgical case volume characteristics among certifying urologists associated with treatment of urethral stricture to compare practice patterns of recent graduates to recertifying attending urologists and trends over time.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six-month case log data of certifying and recertifying urologists (2003-2013) were obtained from the American Board of Urology. In a 1.5-year-old male hunting dog, a urethral defect distal to the pelvic flexure and the resulting urethral fistula were treated with a mucosal graft and a transurethral catheter. Six months postoperatively a stricture of the urethra occurred. Following balloon dilatation, urination was normal. One month after dilatation, urethral narrowing relapsed and was treated using a combination of balloon dilatation and urethral stent implantation. Following urethrotomy approximately 50% develop recurrence within 6 months. Twenty-nine consecutive patients were offered clean intermittent self-catheterization (CISC) as a preventive measure against urethral stricture recurrence following internal urethrotomy. Seven cases of difficult urethrorectal fistulas complicated by posterior urethral stricture following accidental trauma were repaired successfully by a transpubic approach. This method makes urethroplasty of complex posterior urethral stricture, closure of urethrorectal fistulas and an omental interposition possible. This approach was considered after a review of all techniques described to treat the urethrorectal fistulas.

Between February 1987 and May 1988, 30 patients who presented with single, iatrogenic, annular strictures of the bulbar urethra were included in this prospective study. They were randomly divided into two groups; group 1: 15 patients who underwent direct-vision endoscopic urethrotomy (cold-knife incision at 12 o'clock) and group 2: 15 patients who underwent internal urethrotomy plus Nd-YAG laser.
