When the Urine Turns Purple: Not Always a Urinary Tract Infection.

Purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) is an uncommon but distinctive phenomenon characterized by violet discoloration of the urinary collection system. It occurs mainly in elderly, debilitated, and chronically catheterized patients, and although alarming, it is usually benign. We report the case of an 89-year-old woman with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis and long-term catheterization who developed purple discoloration of the urine bag during hospitalization for influenza A. She remained asymptomatic, and the discoloration resolved after catheter replacement and optimization of bowel care w

Older people, continence care and catheters: dilemmas and resolutions.

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common problem and has a profound impact on quality of life among older people. There are various nursing interventions and treatments which can improve UI for the majority of people. Catheterization should be considered for specific clinical indications only when other options have been ruled out. Many complications are associated with catheterization, including catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), which are the most common cause of hospital-acquired infections. It is important for nurses and other healthcare professionals to appreciate how cat

[Clinical study of Silver Lubricath Foley catheter].

We evaluated the Silver Lubricath Foley Catheter (silver catheter) coated with silver and hydrogel developed to prevent urinary infection, in comparison with the silicone-coated catheter (silicone catheter). Twelve patients ranging from 71 to 95 years of age (median age, 82 years) were catheterized and the 16 of 18F catheter was replaced every 2 weeks. They answered a questionnaire which included inquiry about the treatment with urinary catheter. Because of less leakage and discomfort to the urethra, the silver catheter had advantages over the silicone catheter. The risk of bacteriuria after 1

Videourodynamic predictive factors of urological complications in patients with chronic spinal cord injury and detrusor sphincter dyssynergia.

BACKGROUND: Patients with suprasacral spinal cord injury (SCI) often develop neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction, with detrusor sphincter dyssynergia (DSD) being a prevalent and clinically significant condition. The severity of DSD is classified into three grades, with higher grades associated with an increased risk of urological complications. However, few studies have systematically compared these complications across different DSD grades. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 543 SCI patients diagnosed with neurogenic detrusor overactivity with or without DSD using v

Measurement of bladder volume following cesarean section using bladderscan.

Urinary dysfunction is common following delivery, especially after cesarean section. A large number of women may undergo catheterization to ascertain whether they are in retention, as ultrasound is not always available. The bladder volume in 50 women was estimated using a Bladderscan and compared to that measured by urethral catheterization. A close correlation was found (r = 0.807: P = 0.610). These results have resulted in the Bladderscan being used as an alternative to intermittent catheterization as a test of bladder overdistension following cesarean section in our unit.

Effect of clean intermittent self-catheterization on quality of life: a qualitative study.

AIM: This paper is a report of a study to describe the experience of people carrying out clean intermittent self-catheterization and the impact on their quality of life. BACKGROUND: Clean intermittent self-catheterization is a recommended treatment for people experiencing urinary voiding difficulties. The majority of the literature to date has focused on biomedical issues such as complication rates and use of different catheters. METHOD: A qualitative approach was used based on grounded theory. Fifteen users (eight men and seven women) of intermittent self-catheterization took part in semi-s

Risk factors for catheter-associated urinary tract infections following radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer.

BACKGROUND: Radical hysterectomy is the mainstay of treatment for early-stage cervical cancer. Urinary tract dysfunction is one of the most common complications after radical hysterectomy, and prolonged catheterization has previously been defined as a significant risk factor for catheter-associated urinary tract infections. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infections after radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer, and to identify additional risk factors for developing catheter-associated urinary tract infections in this population. Urethral false passage as a complication of intermittent catheterization.

Intermittent catheterization is used commonly to treat bladder dysfunction. We treated 10 patients who were experiencing difficulty with intermittent catheterization, 9 of whom had a false urethral passage. Of these patients 6 had previously undergone a bladder neck or urethral operation. Endoscopy was helpful to diagnose the condition. Treatment consisted of stenting in 3 patients, transurethral incision and stenting in 3, and fulguration and stenting in 4. An indwelling catheter was left in place for 2 to 3 weeks, after which intermittent catheterization was resumed with a softer catheter. T

Urinary Catheter Utility in Laparoscopic Appendectomy: Risk Benefit Analysis of Post-Operative Urinary Tract Complications.

Background: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) account for 1 million nosocomial infections annually and 75% of all hospital-acquired UTIs. A risk factor for CAUTI is prolonged urinary catheterization (UC); therefore, transitory UC during laparoscopic appendectomy (LA), a common practice justified to avoid iatrogenic bladder injury, is believed to be safe. However, data on the incidence of post-operative UC-related complications, including CAUTI, following LA or their avoidance are limited. Hypothesis: Patients who underwent UC for LA developed more post-operative UTIs than p…
