Emergency Ureteral Stone Treatment Score Predicts Outcomes of Ureteroscopic Intervention in Acute Obstructive Uropathy Secondary to Urolithiasis.

INTRODUCTION: Immediate ureteroscopic treatment for patients presenting to the emergency room with symptomatic ureterolithiasis is more commonly being utilized. Recent reports demonstrate good efficacy for emergency ureteroscopy (URS); however, preoperative predictors of treatment success have not been described. In this study, we report our multicenter experience with emergency URS and identify predictors of successful treatment. We also describe the Emergency Ureteral Stone Treatment (EUST) score, which integrates these predictors and stratifies patients into those that are likely and unlike

[Efficacy of thiazide in idiopathic calcium urolithiasis. Results of a one-year double-blind study (author's transl)].

In a one-year double-blind study, the efficacy of hydrochlorothiazide was tested in 51 out-patients with recurrent calcium lithiasis. In the group to which thiazide had been administered, urinary calcium was significantly and lastingly reduced (p < 0.001 in fasting and daily urine), in the placebo group, however, it remained unaltered. Total serum calcium was unspecifically raised in both groups (protein-bound fraction) since ionized and ultrafiltrable calcium remained unchanged and parameters for parathyroid gland function tended to be reduced. The daily oxalate excretion in the urine was red

Case report: A case series report: recurrent urolithiasis as a risk factor for upper tract urothelial carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UBC) and upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) are distinct malignancies with differing prognoses and molecular characteristics despite their shared histological origin. Emerging evidence suggests that chronic inflammation, often driven by specific carcinogenic exposures, plays a critical role in tumour development. While the oncogenic role of various chemical agents in UTUC is well established, the potential contribution of recurrent urolithiasis remains underappreciated and insufficiently studied. Given the frequent observation of inflamma…

Three-fluorescence sensor for minute-time scale low-cost analysis of urinary oxalate in urolithiasis metabolic assessment.

Since oxalate plays an important role in the metabolic assessment of urolithiasis, there is need for convenient and efficient methods for oxalate detection. Herein, we report a three-signal fluorescence strategy for oxalate analysis based on the ability of oxalate to reduce Cu2+ to Cu+, and the ability of pyrophosphate-cerium coordination polymeric networks (PPi-Ce CPNs), cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs), and N-Methyl Mesoporphyrin (NMM) to selectively detect Cu2+ and Cu+. The detection range was 100 nM to 1 mM, the turnaround time was 6 min, while the limits of detections for PPi-Ce …

Comparative structural modeling and docking studies of oxalate oxidase: Possible implication in enzyme supplementation therapy for urolithiasis.

In humans oxalate is end product of protein metabolism, with no enzyme present to act on it. In conditions of its enhanced endogenous synthesis or increased absorption from the diet, oxalate accumulation leads to hyperoxaluria which can further lead to a number of pathological conditions including urolithiasis. Urolithiasis has been a perplexing problem due to its high incidence and rate of recurrence after treatment like Extracorporeal-shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). Hence other prophylactic treatment becomes necessary. One of the newer approaches of curing such metabolic disorders is the enzy…

Causal effects of obesity on urolithiasis and the mediating role of inflammatory factors: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

This study aimed to investigate the genetic causal relationship between obesity and urolithiasis using a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. It further explored the potential mediating role of inflammatory factors in this causal pathway. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, and urolithiasis were obtained from publicly available genome-wide association study datasets and employed as instrumental variables. A bidirectional two-sample MR analysis was performed to assess the causal effect of obesity on the risk of urolithiasis. T…
