Improvement of three-dimensional motion sickness using a virtual reality simulator for robot-assisted surgery in undergraduate medical students: A prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: A virtual reality (VR) simulator is utilized as an inexpensive tool for gaining basic technical competence in robotic-assisted surgery (RAS). We evaluated operator 3D motion sickness while using a VR simulator and assessed whether it can be reduced by repeating the training. METHODS: This prospective observational study was conducted at the Department of Urology, Iwate Medical University, a tertiary training hospital in an urban setting. A total of 30 undergraduate medical students participated in the study. We compared whether the VR simulator improved the students' skills in ope

Enabling Heart Self-Monitoring for All and for AAL-Portable Device within a Complete Telemedicine System.

During the last decades there has been a rapidly growing elderly population and the number of patients with chronic heart-related diseases has exploded. Many of them (such as those with congestive heart failure or some types of arrhythmias) require close medical supervision, thus imposing a big burden on healthcare costs in most western economies. Specifically, continuous or frequent Arterial Blood Pressure (ABP) and electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring are important tools in the follow-up of many of these patients. In this work, we present a novel remote non-ambulatory and clinically validated

Socially anxious people reveal more personal information with virtual counselors that talk about themselves using intimate human back stories.

In this paper, we describe our findings from research designed to explore the effect of virtual human counselors' self-disclosure using intimate human back stories on real human clients' social responses in psychological counseling sessions. To investigate this subject, we designed an experiment involving two conditions of the counselors' self-disclosure: human back stories and computer back stories. We then measured socially anxious users' verbal self-disclosure. The results demonstrated that highly anxious users revealed personal information more than less anxious users when they interacted

On the effect of free vs. restricted interaction during the exploration of virtual environments.

Exploration of a Virtual Environment (VE) might vary as well in applied technology as in the conceptual design. A conceptual difference of exploring style and navigation type relates to the degree of freedom a user possesses. It ranges from completely unrestricted to completely restricted navigation. To assess the impact of different exploration styles, an experiment was carried out. Four different styles were compared in a large-scale VE. The navigation of the participants was either free or restricted in various levels concerning motion and viewing direction. During the exploration, the part

[Simulator sickness as a valid issue of simulator-based research].

Simulators are increasingly being used in both research and training as well as in medicine, e.g., therapy of patients with diagnosed post traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). The use of simulators with strict control of environmental conditions allows for workload assessment or procedures improvement. Despite all the advantages of the utilization of simulators, the simulator sickness issue remains still topical. Simulator sickness may interfere with the measurement accuracy or effectiveness of training or therapy, but it can also be a source of stress for those carrying out the assignments on s

Long-term hand tele-rehabilitation on the PlayStation 3: benefits and challenges.

Rehabilitation interventions for the hand have shown benefits for children with Hemiplegia due to cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury. Longer interventions are facilitated if training is provided in the patient's home, due to easier access to care and reduced impact on school or work activities. Providing remote rehabilitation over lengthy periods of time has however its own challenges. This paper presents two pediatric patients with hemiplegia, who practiced virtual hand rehabilitation games using a modified PlayStation 3 and 5DT sensing gloves. Despite severe initial hand spasticity, an

Accuracy of a Brain Computer Interface (P300 spelling device) used by people with motor impairments.

A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) provides a completely new output pathway and so, an additional possible way a person can express himself if he/she suffers from disorders like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), brainstem stroke, brain or spinal cord injury, or other diseases which impair the function of the common output pathways which are responsible for the control of muscles or impair the muscles. Although most BCIs are thought to help people with disabilities, they are mainly tested on healthy, young subjects who may achieve better results than people with impairments. In this study we c

A systematic approach to the use of the multiplanar display in evaluation of abnormal vascular connections to the fetal heart using 4-dimensional ultrasonography.

OBJECTIVE: The multiplanar display is a modality that allows the simultaneous visualization of 3 orthogonal planes from volume data sets obtained with 3- and 4-dimensional ultrasonography. Simultaneous display of standard views used in fetal echocardiography and their orthogonal planes may provide novel ultrasonographic views for examination of the fetal heart and its vascular connections. This study was designed to determine the clinical utility of the multiplanar display in the examination of abnormal vascular connections to the fetal heart. METHODS: We reviewed 4-dimensional volume data se

[Developing authoring tools for web-based multi-media orthopedics education modules].

In the framework of the EC-Project VOEU ("Virtual Orthopaedic European University"), authoring tools have been developed to support the implementation of online interactive courses for multimedia orthopaedic educational modules. Based on the pedagogical concept of case-based, problem-oriented learning, different user-interaction scenarios and Learning Objects (LOs) were analyzed and developed. Each LO acts as an interactive dialogue presenting one kind of question with certain rules and interactions. The multimedia course content entailing anamnesis, diagnosis and therapy is managed in a datab

Pruritometer 2: portable recording system for the quantification of scratching as objective criterion for the pruritus.

Studies to evaluate therapies for itching (pruritus) related diseases often require the quantification of the itch sensation. Like all subjective symptoms the evaluation of itching is difficult and can only be done indirectly. With the Pruritometer 2 a measuring system is introduced that evaluates itching by detecting scratching movements. Based on the Pruritometer 1, that processes the signals of a piezoelectric vibration sensor, fixed on the midfinger of the patients dominant hand, and triggers a simple counter, the Pruritometer 2 allows to store the scratch activity during a 24 hours period

Serious Game-Based Training for Improved Control of a Temporalis Electromyography Interface for Controlling Powered Wheelchairs.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by a significant decrease in mobility due to its neurodegenerative etiology. Throughout the progression of ALS, patients lose independence in their motor control. An electromyography (EMG) interface that enables control of a powered wheelchair can restore autonomous movement. The use of serious game-based training that mimics EMG-temporalis wheelchair controls can be used as training prior to wheelchair usage in the real world. PURPOSE: Limbitless Runner, a forearm EMG training game, found improved player performance with no sig

The Impact of Physical Props and Physics-Associated Visual Feedback on VR Archery Performance.

Most existing virtual reality exergames rely on generic VR devices, which can limit the physical exertion in VR-based exercises. In contrast, physical props can enhance exercise intensity, yet their impact on users' performance and experience remains understudied, particularly in skill-based tasks. Meanwhile, physical props offer richer tactile and kinesthetic feedback, which, combined with the visual effects of head-mounted displays, presents a potential solution for improving user experience in VR. To explore this, this study developed a sensor-driven experimental framework for investigating

Sense of embodiment with synchronized avatar during walking in mixed reality.

Gait guidance systems that synchronize the gait rhythm with an avatar in a mixed reality (MR) environment are attracting attention owing to their rehabilitation applications. More effective gait guidance can be achieved by changing body sensations for the sense of embodiment (SoE), which refers to the feeling of owning, controlling, and being inside a body in MR. This study investigated full-body synchronous motion between a human and a virtual avatar to enhance the SoE in walking with actual position changes in the real world. The full-body motion and gait rhythm were measured using body-worn

Spatial Augmented Reality for Expanding the Reach of Individuals with Tremor beyond Their Physical Limits.

Tremor is a prevalent neurological disorder characterized by involuntary shaking or trembling of body parts. This condition impairs fine motor skills and hand coordination to varying degrees and can even affect overall body mobility. As a result, tremors severely disrupt the daily lives and work of those affected, significantly limiting their physical activity space. This study developed an innovative spatial augmented reality (SAR) system aimed at assisting individuals with tremor disorders to overcome their physical limitations and expand their range of activities. The system integrates eye-

Usability assessment of an interactive health technology for kidney living donors: protocol for a prospective cross-sectional survey.

INTRODUCTION: Several web portals for kidney patients are available, but assessments of their performance are scarce. A crucial aspect of living donation is to provide standardised information about the risks of the procedure. This is of particular interest among candidates for kidney living donation. In 2019, the Digital Care Path for Living Kidney Donor Candidates was launched in Finland as part of the Health Village portal, containing information about the donation process and facilitating communication between clinicians, transplant coordinators and patients. The performance of this eHealt

In silico prediction of drug-induced ototoxicity using machine learning and deep learning methods.

Drug-induced ototoxicity has become a serious global problem, because of leading to deafness in hundreds of thousands of people every year. It always results from exposure to drugs or environmental chemicals that cause the impairment and degeneration of the inner ear. Herein, we focused on the in silico modeling of drug-induced ototoxicity of chemicals. We collected 1,102 ototoxic medications and 1,705 non-ototoxic drugs. Based on the data set, a series of computational models were developed with different traditional machine learning and deep learning algorithms implemented on an online chemi

Motion sickness and sense of presence in a virtual reality environment developed for manual wheelchair users, with three different approaches.

Visually Induced Motion Sickness (VIMS) is a bothersome and sometimes unsafe experience, frequently experienced in Virtual Reality (VR) environments. In this study, the effect of up to four training sessions to decrease VIMS in the VR environment to a minimal level was tested and verified through explicit declarations of all 14 healthy participants that were recruited in this study. Additionally, the Motion Sickness Assessment Questionnaire (MSAQ) was used at the end of each training session to measure responses to different aspects of VIMS. Total, gastrointestinal, and central motion sickness
