Non-infectious uveitis (NIU) comprises a group of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases of the uvea that frequently affect people of working age. If inflammation is not controlled promptly, it may lead to permanent structural damage and visual loss. Prolonged corticosteroid use increases the risk of adverse effects. Primary uveal melanoma is rare and affects approximately 8,000 persons per year worldwide. This malignancy can involve the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. Of these three structures, the iris is the least commonly affected site, representing only 4% of all uveal melanomas. We examined the ability of rabbit ciliary epithelium to metabolize arachidonic acid in vitro. The epithelium was homogenized and incubated with 14C-labeled arachidonic acid. 14C-labeled metabolites were extracted and then separated by thin layer chromatography. Fifteen patients with clinical presentations compatible with idiopathic inflammatory orbital pseudotumor were examined by CT and MR imaging to determine if MR could add specificity to the CT appearance of this entity. MR was performed on a 1.5 T system, using surface-coil and head-coil techniques.
