The AA. present a review of the embryologic development of the internal ear linked with evolutive phylogenic events, which will determine the morphogenesis of this organ, of ancestral origin. The significance of those phenomena in order to bring about several physiological attributes as the possibility of vestibular hearing and even to set off pathologic conditions like the otosclerosis are considered.

In the present paper a series of experiments will be described in which the postural consequences of long (up to 1.5 h) duration 3G-centrifugation have been subject to investigation. A vestibular model is presented in order to explain for the postural imbalance found in specific conditions after the centrifuge run, and for the often concomitant feelings of motion sickness (50% of the subjects suffer from Sickness Induced by long duration Centrifugation). Finally, the possible relation between SIC and the Space Adaptation Syndrome is discussed.

This review examines the role of activity and perceptual learning in motion sickness by means of a survey of the two kinds of recent research relevant to this topic. The first is a body of literature concerned not with motion sickness as such, but with perception of orientation and self-motion under the conditions of 'sensory conflict' which are thought to provoke motion sickness. Vestibulo-vascular responses were investigated in 52 patients suffering from hypertensive encephalopathy and cochleovestibular disorders. All the patients underwent neurological and otoneurological examinations, tachooscillographic and vestibulometric measurements during optokinetic stimulation and air calorimetry (T-20 degrees C) as well as rotatory tests (V-45 degrees/S). We demonstrated earlier, that undecapeptide of hydra vulgaris possesses vestibulo-protective activities in cats. We also investigated potential of vestibulo-protective properties of other peptide-protein substances from hydrobiontics. The work was done on 18 cats. We used the model of L. A. Radkevich and K. B. Suri for generated vestibulo-vegetative disorders (VVD).

The occurrence of monosymptomatic courses of Menière's disease is not generally accepted, although cochlear forms are described in literature. Retrospectively, we evaluated the case histories of 108 patients with Menière disease, who developed the typical trias in the further course of the disease. The revival of endolymphatic sac surgery has led to many investigations in Meniere's disease, including lateral tomography of the periaqueductal pneumatization. We radiologically assessed a series of Meniere's patients and a control group, and found hypocellularity to be more common in Meniere's disease as the literature has stated. However, we found this finding bilaterally in patients with unilateral disease. Our assessment of this information in regard to the etiology and treatment of Meniere's disease is presented.

When combined vestibular and visual (optokinetic) stimuli were given to squirrel monkeys in a direction and phase mismatching sinusoidal mode (in yaw plane), five of six monkeys exhibited actual emesis during three repeated exposures on separate trial days. Two animals vomited on two trial days and three animals, on one day. The incidence took place in 38.9% of the total trial days. When the identical vestibular and visual stimuli were given individually, the effect was negligible, thus confirming each stimulus magnitude was not stressful enough to produce emesis when used separately.

24 male subjects were divided into 3 groups, on the basis of their susceptibility to motion sickness. All subjects were then required to set a luminous line in an apparently vertical position while viewing the line from a body position which was deviated 70 degrees laterally from the upright. No visible frame of reference was available.
