Acute effects of vibration on peripheral blood flow in healthy subjects.

OBJECTIVES: The main objective was to study the acute vascular effects in the hands of normal healthy subjects of a complex vibration spectrum similar to that generated by many industrial hand held tools. The effects of repeated bouts of vibrations and alterations in the intensity of vibration were also studied. METHODS: Blood flow was measured by venous occlusion plethysmography with strain gauges. Vibration across a frequency range of 0.4 to > 4000 Hz was generated by a pneumatic chisel and applied to the right hand. Blood flow was measured in both middle fingers, both big toes, or both for…

Thyroarytenoid muscle activity and infraglottic aspect of canine vocal fold vibration.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of contraction of the thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle on the location of the mucosal upheaval (MU) and to estimate the location of the MU in relation to the histologic structure of the vocal fold. BACKGROUND: The MU is a small mucosal ridge arising on the lower surface of the vocal fold during phonation and is thought to be the lower border of the vibrating structure. METHODS: Vibrations were elicited under three conditions: during bilateral TA muscle contraction, without TA muscle stimulation, and during vocal fold lengthening. The vibrations were recorded f…

Vibrotactile perception sensitivity and its relation to hand-arm vibration exposure.

Vibrotactile perception thresholds (VPT) at seven test frequencies (8-500 Hz) have been measured and evaluated among 170 male employees at a heavy engineering production workshop, 125 of them were at present, or in the past, exposed to hand-arm vibration. All participants were examined by a physician and none had symptoms of diseases or were exposed to other factors known to cause sensory neuropathies. VPTs [for the three lowest (8-32 Hz; non-Pacinian), for the four highest (63-500 Hz; Pacinian) and for all test frequencies together] and a sensitivity index (SI) has been individually graded in…

The effects of phonosurgery on laryngeal vibration: Part I. Theoretic considerations.

Surgical manipulation of the laryngeal framework (phonosurgery) is rapidly gaining interest and attention. To date, however, a comparative objective evaluation of the various phonosurgical techniques has not been reported. A theoretic model of the larynx, a four-mass model based on the work of Ishizaka (J Acoust Soc Am 1976;60:1193-8) and Koizumi et al. (J Acoust Soc Am 1987;82:1179-92), was developed and adapted to simulate laryngeal biomechanical behavior, as understood by current research. The model was then applied to a comparative evaluation of phonosurgical techniques. Input parameters t

[Angiopathy caused by vibration and CREST syndrome: beware of hidden pathologies!].

The etiologic definition of an occupational disease should be achieved via an accurate differential diagnosis. A careful assessment of any clinical features that are atypical or unusual for the disease in question can sometimes lead to the identification of other morbid states that are either hidden or show few symptoms, and may or may not interfere with the occupational picture. The case described is of a man who, after working for 10 years with vibrating tools, developed a vibration disease with typical circulatory alterations in the hands and osteoarticular and neurological alterations. How…

Glottographic measures of vocal fold vibration: an examination of laryngeal paralysis.

Photoglottography and electroglottography were applied to groups of patients with recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, superior laryngeal nerve paralysis, and combined recurrent and superior laryngeal nerve paralyses of idiopathic causes. Individual patients with resection of the vagal nerve above the origin of the superior laryngeal nerve were also studied. Open Quotient and Speed Quotient were calculated from the photoglottography signals. Speed Quotient values significantly differentiated recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis from idiopathic paralysis and superior laryngeal nerve paralysis, a

Homodyne interferometer for basilar membrane vibration measurements. II. Hardware and techniques.

Selected mechanical features of the design of the homodyne interferometer are described. This interferometer was utilized for basilar membrane vibration measurements. The massive construction necessary to minimize mechanical vibration and noise is described. In order to measure basilar membrane vibrations, it was necessary to increase its reflectivity. Gold crystals were utilized as microscopic mirrors. The technique for fabrication of gold crystals is described. These crystals are small and fragile and required special handling. The method of picking up the crystals and placing them on a pres…

Increased vigilance with vertical vibration at 5 Hz: an alerting mechanism.

The human body resonates at a vertical frequency of 5 Hz. Yet in vigilance tasks when motivation is low, performance improves reliably with vertical vibration at 5 Hz. This is because the vertical vibration of the shoulders at 5 Hz can be reduced by tensing the trunk muscles. The increased muscle tension helps to maintain alertness. The alerting mechanism is not mentioned in the international standard for human exposure to vibration. Drivers who travel long distances on deserted motorways at night with modern well-sprung car bodies and seats are deprived of the alerting mechanisms. They would …

Exposure to hand-arm vibrations in the workplace and the occurrence of hand-arm vibration syndrome, Dupuytren's contracture, and hypothenar hammer syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

This study provides an overview of the relationships between exposure to work-related hand-arm vibration and the occurrence of pre-defined disorders of the hands. We searched Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Central, and PsycINFO for cross-sectional and longitudinal studies on the association between work-related vibration exposure and the occurrence of hand-arm vibration syndrome (including vibration-induced white finger), Dupuytren's contracture, or hypothenar hammer syndrome. We used a 16-item checklist for assessing the risk of bias. We present results narratively, and we conducte…

Nonlinear Freezing of Vibrational Polariton Transport via Mesoscale Simulations.

Two-dimensional real-space imaging of vibrational polariton transport in planar Fabry-Pérot microcavities is numerically simulated via the mesoscale cavity molecular dynamics approach, which self-consistently propagates∼2×104 realistic molecular simulation cells on a two-dimensional grid coupled to the same number of cavity modes. Beyond the well-known polariton ballistic-to-diffusive turnover in the linear response regime, these atomistic simulations reveal a nonlinear freezing mechanism of vibrational polariton transport; that is, under strong pumping of the upper polariton, the initially ba…

Nonequilibrium CO2 utilisation via vibrational activation in plasma catalysis.

With the rapid expansion of renewable electricity, CO2 conversion into fuels and chemicals is attracting growing interest as a route toward circular carbon utilisation. However, the high chemical stability of CO2 makes its efficient activation a central challenge. Molecular vibrational excitation can couple with reaction coordinates, thereby reducing the translational energy required to access transition-state regions and enhancing reactivity. Nonthermal plasma can generate vibrationally excited CO2 under nonequilibrium conditions, offering a practical route to exploit vibrational activation i…

Superheating and melting phenomena of a vibrated granular layer of cubic particles.

We report the combined results of both experiments and molecular dynamics simulations, carried out to investigate superheating phenomena in vertically vibrated granular matter. Specifically, we consider a system of cubic particles, densely packed in a squared-lattice array and subjected to different acceleration shaking strengths Γ. Below a critical value Γ_{c}∼3.2, the excited crystalline array remains stable indefinitely, whereas for a fixed Γ>Γ_{c}, the system stays first in a metastable solid phase and then it transitions progressively into a liquid phase, during a Γ-dependent timescale τ_

Continuous Hand-Arm Vibrations Do Not Interfere with Cognitive Processing.

When humans engage in closely coupled human-machine interactions, they often experience hand-arm vibrations, which are a byproduct of the running machine. Yet, in closely coupled human-machine interactions, it is important to ensure that human attention and cognition remains sufficiently high to avoid accidents and to achieve a good performance. The aim of the present study was to examine whether hand-arm vibrations impact on cognitive processing. In two studies, we investigated the impact of constant or random vibration compared to a baseline condition without vibration on selective attention…

Mechanical characterization of constrained soft materials via nonlinear vibrations.

Soft materials such as gels and elastomers have widespread applications in robotics, biomedical engineering, and the food industry. Traditional mechanical characterization methods such as uniaxial tension/compression and rheometry cannot work in-operando or track the internal stress build-up and geometric changes of the materials due to environmental stimuli. Vibration-based methods with non-contact sensing techniques can achieve high-throughput measuring to monitor the evolution of mechanical properties and internal stresses of soft materials. However, vibration characteristics depend not onl…
