Factors Associated With Successful Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery for Traumatic Hemothorax in Children: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the rarity of traumatic hemothorax in children, no studies have evaluated factors associated with successful video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) as definitive management. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory cross-sectional analysis of pediatric patients in the Trauma Quality Programs database from 2008 to 2017 with traumatic hemothorax managed with primary VATS. Those with early resuscitative thoracotomy for cardiac arrest were excluded. We stratified patients by blunt or penetrating mechanism and estimated absolute differences (ADs) and 95% confidence intervals

A comparison of regional anesthesia techniques in patients undergoing video-assisted thoracic surgery: A network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain control remains challenging in patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). This study aimed to investigate the relative efficacy of different regional anesthesia interventions for VATS using a Network Meta analysis (NMA). METHODS: A literature search was conducted for NMA using Pubmed, The Cochrane Library, Embase, and the Web of Science databases to identify all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared the analgesic effects of different regional analgesia techniques from inception to February 2022. The primary outcome was opioid co

Effects of Preserving the Pulmonary Vagus Nerve Branches on Cough After Pneumonectomy During Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Cough is one of the most common complications of early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). The vagus nerve plays an important role in pulmonary inflammation and the cough reflex. In this study, we attempted to reduce the incidence of postoperative chronic cough and other complications by preserving the pulmonary vagus nerve branches. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was a randomized controlled double-blinded trial of subjects and observers. A total of 158 NSCLC patients were enrolled. We randomly assigned 79 patients to Group

CT-guided microcoil localization for pulmonary nodules in the scapula-shadowed area before Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility and safety of CT-guided microcoil localization for pulmonary nodules in the scapula-shadowed area before video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-seven patients (18 males, 19 females; mean age 57.5 years) with 48 pulmonary nodules covered by the scapulae were consecutively enrolled in this study. Successful targeting, localization, and VATS were defined as implantation of microcoil at the target site on CT image obtained immediately after the marking procedure, visualization of nodule location during VATS, and complete resection

Long-term follow-up results of patients diagnosed with nonspecific pleuritis by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery biopsy.

INTRODUCTION: Non-specific pleuritis (NSP) is a fibrinous or inflammatory pleurisy that is not attributable to a benign or malign etiology. The long-term follow-up results of patients diagnosed with NSP following video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) were investigated in this study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This investigation focused on 593 patients with exudative pleural effusion who underwent VATS between 2011 and 2014. Of the 137 patients diagnosed with NSP, a total of 39 patients were excluded from the study. RESULTS: Out of the 98 patients, 78 were male (80%) with their mean age bein

Single-center experience of simultaneous bilateral uni-portal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for multiple ground-glass opacities.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing incidence rate of ground-glass opacity (GGO), especially for multiple GGOs (≥2). Whether it is safe and feasible to have bilateral simultaneous surgical resection remains unknown. The purpose of this study is to summarize the experience of surgical resection of patients with multiple GGOs in our Hospital in recent years, and to discuss the above questions. METHODS: Clinical datas of patients who underwent one-stage bilateral uni-portal VATS resections of multiple pulmonary ground glass opacities and had routine pathological examination were collected from Ma

Efficacy of CT-guided localization followed by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in children with tiny pulmonary nodules.

CT-guided localization followed by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was performed in three children with pulmonary nodules less than 5 mm in diameter. The patients' respective primary diagnoses were Wilms tumor, hepatoblastoma, and osteosarcoma of the femur. The pulmonary nodules were marked preoperatively by a percutaneously placed hook-wire or dye under CT guidance. Although none of the nodules was grossly detected during the operation, they were correctly resected under the guidance of the hook-wire wound or dye. A histological assessment revealed viable metastatic lesions in the case o

[Pleural drainage vs video-assisted minimally invasive surgery in the treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax. A retrospective study].

The most frequent cause of spontaneous pneumothorax is bleb's disease of the lung. Considering that, pnx s. has a remarkable bent for relapsing, we think that it's necessary an aggressive treatment to resolve it. That's because pleural drainage is useful for a symptomatic resolution, VATS for an etiologycal one. To value the real efficacy of the treatment of VATS, we have effected a retrospective research between two classes of patients suffering from pnx s. admitted in our Institute from 1987 until 1991, one treated with pleural drainage (class A, 11 patients) and the other with VATS (class B

Transaxillary retromammary route approach of video-assisted breast surgery enables the inner-side breast cancer to be resected for breast conserving surgery.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic surgery for inner-side breast cancer usually is performed by periareolar approach, but leaves deformation or malposition, and sensory disturbance. We devised an approach of retromammary route without subcutaneous removal, from an axillary skin incision, to treat distant cancers and also to preserve sensation to skin touch. METHODS: We have performed video-assisted breast surgery on 230 patients. The transaxillary retromammary-route approach was performed on 20 patients with early breast cancer. From a 2.5-cm axillary incision, we dissected the major pectoral muscle fasc

Effects of enhanced recovery after surgery plus pulmonary rehabilitation on complications after video-assisted lung cancer surgery: a multicentre randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer surgery is associated with a high incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). We evaluated whether enhanced recovery after surgery plus pulmonary rehabilitation was superior over enhanced recovery after surgery alone in reducing the incidence of postoperative PPCs and length of hospital stay. METHODS: In this pragmatic multicentre, randomised controlled, parallel-group clinical trial, eligible patients scheduled for video-assisted lung cancer surgery were randomly assigned (1:1) to either a newly developed programme that integrated preoperative and posto

Uniportal Robotic-Assisted Versus Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery for Anatomical Lung Resection in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Comparative Single-Center Cohort Study.

Background: Direct comparisons between uniportal robotic-assisted (uRATS) and uniportal video-assisted (uVATS) thoracoscopic anatomical lung resection for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remain scarce. We compared oncologic radicality and perioperative outcomes between the two uniportal approaches in a single-center contemporaneous cohort. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 56 consecutive NSCLC patients undergoing uniportal anatomical resection between January 2024 and December 2025 (uRATS, n = 12; uVATS, n = 44). The primary endpoint was oncologic radicality of lymph-node di

Combined minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass with video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery thymectomy via left anterolateral mini-thoracotomy.

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has become increasingly prevalent across almost all surgical specialties, including cardiothoracic surgery. However, combined MIS for coronary artery bypass and thymectomy in a single sitting has not been previously documented. We report a case of a 61-year-old male with coronary artery disease and anterior mediastinal nodules who underwent both minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) thymectomy via left anterolateral mini-thoracotomy. He was discharged on post-operative day 3. In well-selected p

Comparison of intrathecal morphine versus thoracic paravertebral block for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: a randomized non-inferiority trial.

BACKGROUND: Although widely performed, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is associated with significant postoperative pain. Thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB) is a guideline-favored regional technique, while intrathecal morphine (ITM) is a technically less demanding and more widely applicable neuraxial alternative. We hypothesized that ITM would provide analgesic efficacy non-inferior to TPVB in terms of 24-hour intravenous morphine milligram equivalents (IV-MME). METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized, controlled, observer-blinded non-inferiority trial. Adults undergoing elec

Isolated pulmonary and renal IgG4-related disease: a rare dual-organ presentation diagnosed via video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic fibroinflammatory disorder that typically presents with multiorgan involvement. Herein, we report a rare phenotype in which the disease was confined solely to the kidneys and lungs. A man in his 60s presented with a 6-month history of cough and exertional dyspnoea. Imaging revealed bilateral renal enlargement with decreased enhancement, compatible with IgG4-related kidney disease, whereas the pulmonary findings were atypical for IgG4-related lung disease and radiologically mimicked non-specific interstitial pneumonia, making it difficult to determin

Effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation on perioperative hypothermia in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative hypothermia is common during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and is associated with adverse clinical outcomes. Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique that may modulate thermoregulation; however, evidence from randomized controlled trials remains limited. This study evaluated whether TEAS prevents perioperative hypothermia in patients undergoing VATS. METHODS: Adults scheduled for elective VATS under general anesthesia were randomized (1:1) to receive TEAS at predefined acupoints from 30 min before
