The objective of this study was to (1) investigate the impact of commonly used heat treatment methods - water bath cooking (WBC), convection oven roasting (OCR), grilling (G), and pan frying (PF) - on the concentrations and retention of various forms of selected B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and B12) in goose breast muscle, and (2) assess the extent to which a 100 g portion of goose meat, both with and without skin, contributes to meeting the Nutrient Reference Values-Requirements (NRV-R) for these vitamins in the adults. The material used in the study comprised 36 breast muscles of 17-week-

Myo-Inositol (MYO) is the most abundant stereoisomer of inositols' family, cyclic polyols with 6 hydroxyl groups. Myo-Inositol has a relevant role in thyroid function and autoimmune diseases, as a precursor of phosphoinositides that takes part in the phosphatidylinositol (PI) signal transduction pathway. Among phosphoinositides, phosphatidylinositol 4,5- bisphosphate (PIP2) is the precursor of inositol triphosphates (IP3), second messenger of several hormones including thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). As a second messenger in the phospholipase C (PLC)-dependent inositol phosphate Ca2+/DAG pa

Thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency is a common condition in alcohol abusers, which can lead to damage of both the peripheral and the central nervous systems. Here we describe the case of an alcoholic patient who presented with acute onset of ataxia, severe weakness of the four limbs, and hypoesthesia and dysesthesia of the distal portion of the upper and lower extremities. The clinical picture also included mental confusion and amnesia. A diagnosis of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome was made based on clinical symptoms and brain RMI findings. Electromyography and electroneurography revealed signs of

Cognitive decline is one of the major causes of disability in older people. A high level of homocysteine, a byproduct of vitamin B, has been linked to brain atrophy, which itself is a precursor to cognitive decline leading to dementia and Alzheimer's disease. In addition, a low level of vitamin B is often noted in patients with dementia and Alzheimer's disease and its supplementation has been shown to improve memory and to slow the progress of brain atrophy. This information may aid in the use of vitamin B as a preventative measure against severe cognitive decline, and thus reduce the onset of

Dementia, being a neurodegenerative disease, has devastating consequences not just for the ailing but also for the carers as it has a tremendous negative impact on the quality of life. The pathophysiology of dementia commences far earlier than its diagnosis. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a stage prior to definite dementia. The progression from MCI to dementia is insidious with no definite demarcation, thus making diagnosis clinically difficult at an early stage. This paper attempts to throw light on the epidemiology, risk factors and the aetiopathogenesis of MCI. It further attempts to el

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a risk factor for thiamine deficiency and Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE). WE is a highly underdiagnosed condition. The misdiagnosis is associated more with early or mild WE. The interrelation between migraine and thiamine deficiency is unknown
CASE REPORTS: Here, we report two female patients with chronic migraine. During examinations, we also noted clinical signs pertinent with a diagnosis of WE. Both patients had low blood thiamine level. Intravenous thiamine supplementation led to the improvement of both WE and associated headaches.
DISCUSSION: Nausea, vomiting, an

Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA) is an autosomal recessive inherited disorder characterised by progressive gait and limb ataxia, dysarthria, areflexia, loss of position sense and a progressive motor weakness of central origin. Some observations indicate that all symptoms of FRDA ataxia could be the manifestation of a thiamine deficiency because of enzymatic abnormalities. Two patients with FRDA were under rehabilitative treatment from February 2012 to February 2013. The scale for assessment and rating of ataxia was performed. The patient began an intramuscular therapy with 100 mg of thiamine every 3

The aim of this report is to call attention to a poorly recognised cause of pulmonary hypertension, thiamine deficiency. A 78-year-old woman without alcoholism or malabsorption presented with progressive dyspnoea and generalised oedema. Echocardiography showed signs of right ventricular overload with an estimated systolic pulmonary artery pressure of 50 mm Hg. Increased lactate concentrations prompted us to investigate thiamine deficiency. A 3-month history of picky eating, relying exclusively on white rice as the staple food, and low blood concentrations of thiamine confirmed the diagnosis. S

INTRODUCTION: The focus of this work was to produce delayed-release capsules containing riboflavin (vitamin B2, as API) layered pellets. Riboflavin therapy is indicated in patients with a riboflavin deficiency, which usually occurs in conjunction with malabsorption, alcoholism or a protein-calorie deficiency and rarely as the sole vitamin deficiency. Riboflavin is readily absorbed from the upper gastrointestinal tract by a specific transport mechanism. The dissolution rate of coated capsules was controlled through the coating of the capsules and the thickness of the coating layer.
METHODS: Th

First described in 1881, Wernicke's encephalopathy continues to be an unrecognized and often misunderstood disease. The cause of Wernicke's encephalopathy is thiamine deficiency as a result of any nutritionally deficient state, though many physicians erroneously consider this disease to be confined only to alcoholics. Unfortunately, the syndrome is most often recognized only on autopsy, especially among nonalcoholics. Despite advances in magnetic resonance imaging, Wernicke's encephalopathy remains primarily a clinical diagnosis. The common clinical findings include mental status changes, ocul

We discuss the case of a 49 year old man who was admitted to the emergency department with acute heart failure. He suffered from severe alcoholism and malnutrition. His heart failure was of the high output type and the diagnosis beriberi, a disease caused by thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. The treatment consisted of intravenous administration of thiamine. The clinical response was spectacular with normalization of cardiac function within a few hours.

Homocysteine (tHcy) is an intermediate sulfur-containing amino acid which acts as a methyl group donor for methionine metabolism. Increased serum concentrations (=hyperhomocysteinemia, >10 micromol/l) have been associated with an increased cardiovascular risk. Homocystinuria, an infrequent genetic disease usually due to lack of cystathione beta-synthase, has been found with severely elevated serum homocysteine values (>150 micromol/l). Functional gene polymorphisms of key enzymes (e.g., N5,N10-methylene-tetrahydrofolate reductase) and dietary B-vitamin deficiencies in the elderly are, however,

A case of the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone in association with Wernicke's encephalopathy is described, where both responded to intravenous vitamin B complex. Thiamine may be life-saving in hyponatraemia with neurological signs due to Wernicke's encephalopathy.
