Glix 13, a new drug acting on glutamatergic pathways in children and animal models of autism spectrum disorders.

Recently standardized diagnostic instruments have been developed in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for Autism Spectrumv Disorders (ASD). According to the DSM-5 criteria, individuals with ASD must show symptoms from early childhood. These symptoms are communication deficits and restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour. It was recently described by Bioinformatic analysis that 99 modified genes were associated with human autism. Gene expression patterns in the low-line animals show significant enrichment in autism-associated genes and the NMDA receptor gene family was identified among

Solid lipid nanoparticles reduce systemic toxicity of docetaxel: performance and mechanism in animal.

Nanotechnology presents great potential for increasing efficacy of docetaxel while reducing side-effects and toxicity. However, in vivo toxicity of nano-formulation of docetaxel has not been systemically investigated yet. Herein, the new docetaxel-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (DSNs) were prepared, and systemic toxicity of DSNs in different animals was comprehensively investigated. The experimental results showed that no allergenicity and vascular irritation were induced by DSNs at the highest drug concentration of clinical infusion. The maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of DSNs was as high as 4

Selected problems treated by vocal fold injection of collagen.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluates the results of vocal fold injection of bovine collagen. METHODS: A group of patients were selected because they were not good candidates for other forms of treatment. This included patients with scarred vocal folds, bilateral vocal fold pathology with a small glottic gap, and unilateral vocal fold pathology with atrophy. Assessment used patient self-evaluation, perceptual judgments of voice recordings, laboratory data based on acoustic signal analysis, and aerodynamic measures during voice production. Vocal folds were also studied by videostroboscopy. RESUL

Methylmercury Exposure Reduces the Auditory Brainstem Response of Zebra Finches (Taeniopygia guttata ).

Mercury contamination from mining and fossil fuel combustion causes damage to humans and animals worldwide. Mercury exposure has been implicated in mammalian hearing impairment, but its effect on avian hearing is unknown. In this study, we examined whether lifetime dietary mercury exposure affected hearing in domestic zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) by studying their auditory brainstem responses (ABRs). Zebra finches exposed to mercury exhibited elevated hearing thresholds, decreased amplitudes, and longer latencies in the ABR, the first evidence of mercury-induced hearing impairment in bi

[The possibilities for the restoration of the laryngeal function: the current state-of-the-art].

The restoration of the functional competence of the larynx following bilateral laryngeal nerve damage and vocal fold paralysis is a serious challenge for the surgeon that has thus far no satisfactory solution. Physiological re-innervation that occurs naturally with time is non-selective and, in the majority of the cases, leads to synkinesis. Laryngeal pacing achieved with the application of the implantable microchips appears to be a promising approach. The animal experiments have demonstrated the possibility of successful restoration of all the functions of the larynx by means of laryngeal pac

A device for the intraoperative identification of the recurrent laryngeal nerve in piglets.

The recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) is one of the most frequently injured nerves in head and neck surgery. Routine identification of the RLN during thyroid surgery has reduced the injury rate from 10% to less than 4%. Difficulty in identification of the RLN contributes to this surgical morbidity. Devices previously used for intraoperative identification of the RLN have failed to achieve the simplicity and reliability necessary for clinical use. This animal study uses a simple double-ballooned endotracheal tube and pressure transducer system, which assists intraoperative RLN identification thro

Deep Learning-Assisted Evaluation of Laryngeal Mobility in a Rat Model.

Vocal fold mobility is essential for normal laryngeal function and is often compromised following recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) or superior laryngeal nerve injuries. In a rat model of unilateral (RLN) injury, we quantitatively evaluate laryngeal mobility using advanced computer vision techniques. Adult male Long-Evans rats underwent direct laryngoscopy before and after RLN injury at the level of the 5th tracheal ring. High-resolution video recordings were analyzed with the open-source deep learning framework Social LEAP Estimates Animal Poses (SLEAP) to track key laryngeal landmarks. The dis

Behavioral and transcriptomic responses of wild least horseshoe bats to artificial light.

Artificial light has altered nighttime environments, jeopardizing the fitness of organisms. While many nocturnal animals avoid artificial light, the molecular mechanisms behind this phenomenon remain elusive. This study aimed to explore the behavioral and transcriptomic responses of least horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus pusillus) to artificial light. We manipulated three lighting conditions (i.e., dark control, white light, and green light) inside bat roost. We assessed behavioral responses and gene expressions in the adrenal gland-kidney complexes and brains of bats. Our analyses showed that whit

Altered laryngeal morphology in Period1 deficient mice.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) of mice are produced in and emitted by the larynx. However, which anatomical elements of the mouse larynx are involved and to which aspects of USV they contribute is not clear. Frequency and amplitude parameters of mice, deficient in the clock gene Period1 (mPer1-/- mice) are distinguishably different compared to C3H wildtype (WT) controls. Because structural differences in the larynx may be a reason for the different USV observed, we analyzed laryngeal anatomy of mPer1-/- mice and WT control animals using micro-computed-tomography and stereology. Toward affective circuit-based preclinical models of depression: sensitizing dorsal PAG arousal leads to sustained suppression of positive affect in rats.

Little is known about why clinical depression feels so bad, perhaps because optimal neural circuit-based animal models of depression do not yet exist. Our goal here was to develop a strategy of inducing and measuring depressive-like states in the rat using neural circuits as both the independent and major dependent variables. We hypothesized that repeated electrical stimulation of the brain (ESB) within the dorsal periaqueductal gray (dPAG) aversion circuits would lead to a long-lasting suppression of 50kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), a validated measure of positive social affect. [Vocalab: a new software for voice evaluation and therapy].

When handling vocal pathologies, speech therapists need tools to visualise voice and speech, in order to correlate personal auditory analysis with accurate data. Vocalab2 is a spectral analysis tool designed for speech therapists, developed in partnership with INSA Toulouse, France. Vocalab is a simple and user-friendly tool with important features to be used during evaluation and therapy. The software is based on a set of phoniatric data and sophisticated real-time signal analysis (Fourier transform, fundamental detection). One of the key tools of Vocalab2 is the real-time spectrum for visual

Defensive reflexes of the respiratory tract in dogs.

Intrapleural pressure, the tracheal air flow and tidal volume were recorded simultaneously in pentobarbital-anaesthetized dogs and changes occurring in them during defensive reflexes elicited by mechanical stimulation of the mucosa of different parts of the respiratory tract were evaluated quantitatively. The results show that, in addition to coughing and sneezing provoked by inserting a nylon fibre into the tracheobronchial region, the larynx and the nose, further respiratory reflexes described in other mammals also appear in these animals. Mechanical stimulation of the epipharynx with a fine

Switch costs reveal vocal-specific executive demands during flexible action selection in crows.

Crows and other corvids exhibit remarkable cognitive flexibility, exercising volitional control that allows them to select, initiate and withhold actions based on deliberate decisions rather than reflex. Among these behaviours, vocalizations are especially demanding, yet crows perform them with exceptional precision, paralleling core building blocks of human speech. Despite this, the executive mechanisms supporting intentional vocal control, and how they differ from those governing other voluntary actions, remain largely unknown. We trained carrion crows to produce either vocalizations or peck

Combinatorial Instrumental Sound-Making in a Captive Chimpanzee: Evolution of Vocal Externalization.

Instrumental music may have evolved from earlier vocal expressions, gradually expanding into rhythmic sound production using tools. We report a novel case in which a captive male chimpanzee spontaneously produced a structured instrumental display using a self-fabricated tool. The display consisted of combinatorial sequences of rhythmic actions resembling the structure of pant-hoot vocalizations. Transition analyses revealed significant nonrandom transitions from tool-assisted drumming to object dragging, and from dragging to object throwing, and rhythm analyses showed that the drumming pattern

Unpredictable prey motion shapes behavior across time scales.

Locating, tracking and intercepting objects is a fundamental behavior for many organisms. For instance, predators must track and capture erratically moving prey for their survival. Using the echolocating bat as a model species, we investigated how short-term changes in target motion predictability affect longer-term motor plans when tracking a prey item. We used a paradigm where prey motion is under experimental control, and then applied computational methods to characterize how target motion predictability influences short- and long-term behavioral control. We found that target motion predict

The Vocal Repertoire of Gray-Cheeked Mangabeys (Lophocebus albigena) in the Bugoma Forest Reserve, Uganda.

Vocal communication is central for regulating social interactions among primates, particularly in dense forest environments with limited visibility. The acoustic structure of vocalizations is often shaped by a species' socio-ecology. However, numerous species remain poorly documented, including the gray-cheeked mangabey (Lophocebus albigena), an arboreal primate endemic to the forests of Central and East Africa. We combined acoustic measurements with behavioral observations to provide a first quantitative and contextual description of the gray-cheeked mangabey vocal repertoire in the Bugoma Ce

Acoustic features and morphological parameters of the domestic chickens.

Acoustic characteristics reflect male quality and play a role in female mate choice. Thus, the frequency of vocalizations and temporal characteristics are often related to body size within and across species. However, it is less clear whether acoustic features can reveal information about individual quality in the domestic chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) populations. Here, we investigated the relationship between morphological parameters and acoustic features in male and female free-ranged domestic chickens in Liuzhi, Guizhou, southwest China, and further examined whether acoustic character

California mice (Peromyscus californicus) adjust mouth movements for vocal production during early postnatal development.

BACKGROUND: The order Rodentia is the largest group of mammals. Diversification of vocal communication has contributed to rodent radiation and allowed them to occupy diverse habitats and adopt different social systems. The mechanism by which efficient vocal sounds, which carry over surprisingly large distances, are generated is incompletely understood. Here we focused on the development and function of rhythmic mouth movements and laryngeal sound production. We studied spontaneously vocalizing California mice (Peromyscus californicus) through video and sound recordings. Mouth gape was estimate

Adult neurogenesis is necessary for functional regeneration of a forebrain neural circuit.

In adult songbirds, new neurons are born in large numbers in the proliferative ventricular zone in the telencephalon and migrate to the adjacent song control region HVC (acronym used as proper name) [A. Reiner et al., J. Comp. Neurol. 473, 377-414 (2004)]. Many of these new neurons send long axonal projections to the robust nucleus of the arcopallium (RA). The HVC-RA circuit is essential for producing stereotyped learned song. The function of adult neurogenesis in this circuit has not been clear. A previous study suggested that it is important for the production of well-structured songs [R. E.
