Differential Health Impacts of Short-Term Particulate Matter Exposure in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions: A Scoping Review.

Particulate matter (PM) exposure is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular and respiratory morbidity and mortality across the world. While arid and semi-arid regions account for more than 40% of terrestrial land, there is a paucity of research investigating the relationship between PM exposure and health outcomes or how risk varies across different populations specific to these climate regions. To address this, we performed a scoping review to assess the extent of literature in arid and semi-arid regions that consider such morbidity and mortality risks from short-term PM exposure. Our review

Acute wood smoke exposure is associated with cell-specific hippocampal transcriptomic responses in an accelerated ovarian failure mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Wildfire events are increasing in frequency and intensity, and aging individuals demonstrate heightened biological susceptibility to air pollution exposures including increased risk of neurological sequelae. Declining ovarian hormones levels that occur with aging in females along with associated systemic physiological and inflammatory changes may contribute to increased cerebral vulnerability to air pollution, representing a potential but underexplored mechanism. Menopause and the menopausal transition represent a period of profound physiological change that affects cardiovascular,

Extending climate-health protection from public health to animals: evidence from Colorado.

Animal health remains largely absent from climate-health policy, despite growing evidence of climate-related health risks across species. Using Colorado as a model, we identify key climate hazards affecting animals and examine their overlap with human health risks. We synthesized national, regional, and state-specific climate and health, translating human health themes to 3 animal groups: companion animals, livestock (including horses), and wildlife. Findings were validated through interviews with subject-matter experts from state agencies, academia, and nonprofit organizations. Wildfire, air

Cities as hotspots of compound heat and fine particulate matter pollution: A 23-year urban-rural comparison across the United States.

Heat stress and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution are major stressors that threaten public health and environmental quality. When heat waves and PM2.5 pollution episodes co-occur as compound events, their impacts intensify, often leading to increased mortality and morbidity. This study provides a 23-year (2000-2022) analysis of heat waves, PM2.5 pollution episodes, and their compound occurrences during the warm season across urban and surrounding rural areas of the contiguous U.S. using reconstructed daily minimum air temperature and PM2.5 datasets. Results show that urban areas genera

Long-term tree population growth can predict woody encroachment patterns.

Recent increases in woody plant density in dryland ecosystems-or "woody encroachment"-around the world are often attributed to land-use changes such as increased livestock grazing and wildfire suppression or to global environmental trends (e.g., increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide). While such changes have undoubtedly impacted ecosystem structure and function, the evidence linking them to woody encroachment is mixed, and the underlying processes are not fully understood. To clarify the role of demographic processes in changing woody plant abundance, we conducted a meta-analysis of tree age s

Natural infrastructure in dryland streams (NIDS) can establish regenerative wetland sinks that reverse desertification and strengthen climate resilience.

In this article we describe the natural hydrogeomorphological and biogeochemical cycles of dryland fluvial ecosystems that make them unique, yet vulnerable to land use activities and climate change. We introduce Natural Infrastructure in Dryland Streams (NIDS), which are structures naturally or anthropogenically created from earth, wood, debris, or rock that can restore implicit function of these systems. This manuscript further discusses the capability of and functional similarities between beaver dams and anthropogenic NIDS, documented by decades of scientific study. In addition, we present

The Changing Climate and Pregnancy Health.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Climate change is the biggest public health threat of the twenty-first century but its impact on the perinatal period has only recently received attention. This review summarizes recent literature regarding the impacts of climate change and related environmental disasters on pregnancy health and provides recommendations to inform future adaptation and mitigation efforts. RECENT FINDINGS: Accumulating evidence suggests that the changing climate affects pregnancy health directly via discrete environmental disasters (i.e., wildfire, extreme heat, hurricane, flood, and drought)

A pandemic of inequality: reflections on AIDS and COVID-19 in the southern African context.

In 2020, COVID-19 started spreading from Wuhan in China to the USA, the UK and Europe and then to the rest of the world. In Africa, the first case of COVID-19 was reported in Egypt on 14 February, while South Africa's first case was identified on 5 March. On 11 March, the World Health Organization declared a pandemic. At the time, it was said that COVID-19 would become the great equaliser because the virus made no distinction between first and third world countries, between the rich and the poor, and nor was it influenced by gender, sexual orientation or race. When someone contracted SARS-CoV-

Tick abundance and diversity are substantially lower in thinned vs. unthinned forests in the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, USA.

Forest thinning is a management tool used in the New Jersey Pinelands and elsewhere to improve forest health and resilience, mitigate wildfire risk, and manage for wildlife. Forest thinning leads to warmer drier microclimates, which have been shown in both field and laboratory studies to reduce tick survival and reproduction. To directly assess the effects of forest thinning on the abundance and diversity of ticks and on the prevalence of tick-borne human pathogens, we sampled ticks weekly from March to November 2021 at three replicated pairs of thinned and unthinned forest sites composed prim

Comparing and Contrasting the Multiple Roles of Butenolide Plant Growth Regulators: Strigolactones and Karrikins in Plant Development and Adaptation to Abiotic Stresses.

Strigolactones (SLs) and karrikins (KARs) are both butenolide molecules that play essential roles in plant growth and development. SLs are phytohormones, with SLs having known functions within the plant they are produced in, while KARs are found in smoke emitted from burning plant matter and affect seeds and seedlings in areas of wildfire. It has been suggested that SL and KAR signaling may share similar mechanisms. The α/β hydrolases DWARF14 (D14) and KARRIKIN INSENSITIVE 2 (KAI2), which act as receptors of SL and KAR, respectively, both interact with the F-box protein MORE AXILLARY GROWTH 2

When the smoke gets in your lungs: short-term effects of Indonesia's 2015 forest fires on health care use.

BACKGROUND: The forest fires that ravaged parts of Indonesia in 2015 were the most severely polluting of this century but little is known about their effects on health care utilization of the affected population. We estimate their short-term impact on visit rates to primary and hospital care with particular focus on visits for specific smoke-related conditions (respiratory disease, acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI) and common cold). METHOD: We estimate the short-term impact of the 2015 forest fire on visit rates to primary and hospital care by combining satellite data on Aerosol Optica

Air pollutants and primary liver cancer mortality: a cohort study in crop-burning activities and forest fires area.

INTRODUCTION: Northern Thailand experiences high levels of air pollution in the dry season due to agricultural waste burning and forest fires. Some air pollutants can enter the bloodstream, and the liver has the role of detoxifying these along with other harmful substances. In this study, we assessed the effects of long-term exposure to air pollutants on liver cancer mortality in this area. METHODS: A cohort of 10,859 primary liver cancer patients diagnosed between 2003 and 2018 and followed up to the end of 2020 were included in the study. Extended time-varying covariates of the annually ave

Machine Learning Predictions of PM2.5 and Their Applications to Exposure and Health Assessment in the CONUS.

Atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is one of the most important risk factors for various respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. We develop a two-phase data-driven framework that uses geostationary Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) retrievals to predict hourly PM2.5 at 0.01° × 0.01° resolution and support exposure assessment across multiple spatial and temporal contexts. We use a U-Net-like partial convolutional neural network framework inspired by image inpainting to address missing Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) data from the GOES-R geostationary satellite. To fill large spatiotemporal gaps

Mortality in relation to smoke exposure 9 years after the Hazelwood coal mine fire.

BACKGROUND: In 2014, a coal mine fire in rural Australia shrouded nearby towns in smoke for several weeks. In response to community concerns and a lack of available evidence, the Victorian Department of Health commissioned a long-term health study. This article evaluates smoke effects on mortality 9 years after the fire. METHODS: In 2016-17, 2872 individuals living near the mine during the fire were recruited into a cohort study and consented to linkage of their data. Time-location diaries were blended with estimates of hourly fire-related fine particulate matter ≤2.5 µm (PM2.5) to generate i

Prenatal exposure to prescribed smoke PM2.5 and low birth weight in Georgia, USA.

BACKGROUND: Prescribed burning is a major but poorly characterized source of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the southeastern United States. While wildfire-related smoke PM2.5 has been linked to adverse birth outcomes, evidence on prescribed fire-related smoke (PFS) and birth weight remains limited, particularly in the Southeast. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the association between prenatal exposure to PFS-specific PM2.5 and birth weight in Georgia, USA. METHODS: We analyzed 448,477 singleton term births (37-42 weeks of gestation) with last menstrual period (LMP) dates between Janua

Fire Severity Drives Long-Term Divergence of Soil Microbial Communities and Functional Traits in an Alpine Forest.

Increasing wildfire severity under climate change may alter the trajectory of belowground recovery in alpine forests, yet its long-term effects on soil microbial communities remain poorly understood. Here, we examined soil physicochemical properties and microbial communities eight years after fire across unburned, low-, moderate-, and high-severity fire sites in an alpine forest of western Sichuan, China. Fire severity was associated with persistent divergence at depths of 0-10 cm, with significant changes in soil organic carbon (SOC), soil water content (SWC), available nitrogen (AN), and mic

Addressing water scarcity to support climate resilience and human health.

Water scarcity is projected to affect half of the world's population, gradually exacerbated by climate change. This article elaborates from a panel discussion at the 2023 United Nations Water Conference on "Addressing Water Scarcity to Achieve Climate Resilience and Human Health." Understanding and addressing water scarcity goes beyond hydrological water balances to also include societal and economic measures. We consider five categories of health impacts resulting from deteriorating water qualities and quantities: (1) water-related diseases and water for hygiene, (2) malnutrition and water fo

Windthrow disturbance impacts soil biogeochemistry and bacterial communities in a temperate forest.

AIMS: Forests across the world are subject to disturbance via wind, wildfire, and pest and disease outbreaks. Yet we still have an incomplete understanding of how these stressors impact forest biota-particularly the soil microbes, which govern forest carbon and nutrient cycling. METHODS: Here, we investigated the impact of a severe windstorm on soil bacterial communities in Kielder Forest, a temperate coniferous forest in the north of England. Within ten individual sites, defined by common stand composition and topography, we established 50 m2 plots in undisturbed stands, and in nearby stands

Environmental impacts of three Asian dust events in the northern China and the northwestern Pacific in spring 2021.

In March 2021, China experienced three dust events (Dust-1, 2, 3), especially the first of which was reported as the strongest one in recent ten years. Their environmental impacts have received great attention, demanding comprehensive study to assess such impacts quantitatively. Multiple advanced measurement methods, including satellite, ground-based lidar, online aerosol speciation instrument, and biogeochemical Argo float, were applied to examine and compare the transport paths, optical and chemical properties, and impacts of these three dust events on urban air quality and marine ecosystem.

DI-SPME method for the analysis of fire accelerants in simulated fire debris samples using GC/MS and GC×GC/Q-TOFMS.

Climate change has intensified droughts and heatwaves, increasing wildfire frequency and the release of hazardous pollutants that threaten ecosystems, human health, and air quality. Selective and sustainable analytical methodologies are therefore required for forensic and environmental investigations. One of the most common methods for fire debris analysis is headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME); however, this approach is limited in its ability to capture low-volatility analytes, typically lost during combustion. Here, an alternative strategy integrating direct immersion solid-phase
