A silent pandemic of violence against providers in obstetrics and gynecology: A mixed-methods study based on a global survey.

OBJECTIVES: To quantify and qualify the experience of workplace violence (WPV) in a global sample of providers in obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN). METHODS: We performed a mixed-methods analysis on data from a global survey. Survey content was designed around categorical and open-ended questions in relation to WPV; the occurrence and character, the physical and psychological consequences, training and support structures, and perceived triggers of the experience of WPV. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and text data using mixed deductive-inductive content analysis.…

Exploring Access to and Use of Community Resources and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Interest Among Black and Latina Women in Texas.

Leveraging community resources to address disparities in HIV and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use across Black and Latino/a communities is of high importance, yet little is known about how community members utilize these resources. We explored the use of community resources and PrEP among Black and Latina women at high risk for HIV by conducting semistructured interviews with 18 Black and Latina women from May 2018 to November 2019 in Austin, Texas. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic content analysis. We found that the majority of participants used community re

Running on Empty: Ontario Hospital Workers' Mental Health and Well-Being Deteriorating Under Austerity-Driven System.

The well-being of health care workers (HCWs) and the public in Ontario, Canada is at risk as the province's health care system is strained by neoliberal restructuring and an aging population. Deteriorating working conditions that preceded the COVID-19 pandemic further declined as the added challenges took their toll on the work force, physically and mentally. The pandemic-weary hospital staff, predominantly women, many racialized, are facing unprecedented challenges. They are experiencing stress, anxiety, and burnout from staffing shortages and the resulting increased workloads, long hours, an

Compliance with mandatory reporting of intimate partner violence among professionals in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Mandatory reporting is a common legislative preventative measure for several types of crimes, among them family violence and specifically intimate partner violence (IPV). Among the individuals who are mandated to report under the law are professionals working with IPV victims and perpetrators in their practice. However, little is known about which characteristics are associated with compliance with the mandatory reporting of IPV (MR-IPV) law, on the one hand, and choosing not to report IPV, on the other. METHODS: The current study sampled 357 professionals from 6 different agencie

An exploratory study of the correlates of weight-based mistreatment at work.

Weight-based mistreatment (WBM), which reflects mistreatment through hostility, threats, underhanded comments, physical violence, or microaggressions that explicitly targets a person's larger body size, occurs frequently in the workplace. To begin to uncover why it occurs, this research documents correlates of WBM by investigating stigmatization of weight through four conceptual frames: stereotyping, the justification-suppression model of prejudice, objectification theory, and occupational contexts. Across a sample of 1,008 self-identified larger-bodied respondents, 383 paired coworkers, and d

The importance and feasibility of hospital interventions to prevent and manage patient aggression and violence against physicians in China: a Delphi study.

BACKGROUND: Aggression and violence by patient (and their relatives/friends) is widely acknowledged as a serious occupational hazard, with physicians being particularly susceptible to witnessing and experiencing such incidents within hospitals. Research has shown that the negative consequences of such aggression and violence are not only felt at the individual level, but also at the team and organizational levels. Understanding how to prevent and manage this behavior towards physicians in hospitals is urgent and not fully researched. While there are many potentially effective interventions, it

[Individual and environmental antecedents of mobbing].

The aim of the article is to present the most common risk factors of bullying at the workplace. In the relevant literature one can find two main classes of bullying risk factors: environmental and individual. The most important environmental predictors of bullying are negative social climate, ineffective social communication and poor work organization. Among individual risk factors of bullying the most frequently pointed are functional features, such as low level of assertiveness, lack of social skills, ineffective coping with difficult situations and the few relatively stable individual chara

What determines violence among female sex workers in an intimate partner relationship? Findings from North Karnataka, south India.

BACKGROUND: Like other women in India, female sex workers (FSWs) frequently experience violence from their intimate partners (IPs)-a reality … nt on IP. Higher likelihood of violence in presence of alcohol use and FSWs' previous experience of workplace violence linked to IPV call for strengthening the crisis management systems within community-based organisations that can address all forms of violence and associated risk factors. Poor working conditions and work stress among Canadian sex workers.

BACKGROUND: While sex work is often considered the world's oldest profession, there remains a dearth of research on work stress among sex workers (SWs) in occupational health epidemiological literature. A better understanding of the drivers of work stress among SWs is needed to inform sex work policy, workplace models and standards. AIMS: To examine the factors that influence work stress among SWs in Metro Vancouver. METHODS: Analyses drew from a longitudinal cohort of SWs, known as An Evaluation of Sex Workers' Health Access (AESHA) (2010-14). A modified standardized 'work stress' scale, mu

Privacy and safety: Issues of dual compliance in high-secure and other forensic psychiatric hospitals.

Health care organizations are obligated to provide safe and effective treatment to their patients and also protect the safety of their workers. This paper analyzes the tensions arising from legislative regimes that, respectively, protect privacy and workplace safety, using a large, tertiary high-secure forensic psychiatric hospital in Ontario, Canada, as an example. In Ontario, the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) prohibits personal health information (PHI) from being disclosed to individuals who fall outside the "circle of care," including nonclinical employees who have dire
