From blood collected from 94 cattle at 12 locations in the eastern and northeastern areas of Zimbabwe, DNA was extracted and analysed by polymerase chain reaction with primers previously reported to be specific for Babesia bigemina and Babesia borvis. Overall, DNA of Babesia bigemina was detected in the blood of 33/94 (35%) cattle and DNA from B. bovis was detected in 27/58 (47%) of cattle. The prevalence of DNA of B. bigemina was significantly higher in young animals (<2 years) (23/46) than in animals over 2 years of age (10/48; chi2= 8.77; P <0.01%). Although tick sampling was not thorough, …

This paper compares strains of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) serotype SAT (South African Territories) 2 viruses isolated from Zimbabwe and other African countries using monoclonal antibodies (MAb). A sandwich-ELISA was used to examine the relative binding of anti-SAT 2 MAb to the various viruses. The MAb-binding profiles of viruses isolated from field samples were compared using hierarchical cluster analysis. Viruses were obtained from game animals, mainly African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) which is the natural host and reservoir for SAT serotypes in Africa, and from cattle showing clinical sign…

BACKGROUND: Unlike in psychiatric disorders such as psychosis where treatment trajectories are well defined, little is known about pathways to care for depression which is increasingly prevalent among young people across the globe. Whilst empirical evidence is slowly becoming available on pathways to care for common mental disorders in the general population in Ghana and Zimbabwe, there is no study that specifically considered treatment pathways for young people.
OBJECTIVES: This study explored trajectories used by young people (15-24 years) to access specialised mental healthcare in order to…

PURPOSE: Adolescent pregnancy is common across Africa. Although programs emphasize contraception, support for those who do become pregnant is limited. We conducted a mixed-methods study in Zimbabwe to understand the service gaps and the needs of pregnant adolescents.
METHODS: Pregnant adolescents (<18 years) identified by community child workers underwent clinical and mental health assessment, and birth outcomes were recorded. Longitudinal in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 pregnant and postpartum adolescents in three waves; in addition, nonrepeat interviews were conducted with 10 nex…

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Zimbabwe faces a protracted cholera crisis exacerbated by El Niño-induced droughts, transitioning from episodic outbreaks to an endemic public health emergency. While recurrent outbreaks are often attributed to poor community awareness, this study moves beyond the conventional Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) paradigm. Grounded in the Integrated Behavioral Model for WASH and the theory of structural violence, we investigate the structural determinants of the knowledge-practice gap to understand how infrastructural disparities constrain cholera prevention.

Over the past few decades, significant progress has been made in the global fight against HIV and AIDS, largely driven by international funding mechanisms such as the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund. These initiatives have been instrumental in expanding access to antiretroviral therapy (ART), implementing prevention programs, and strengthening healthcare infrastructure, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), a region disproportionately affected by HIV. Zimbabwe, in particular, has achieved remarkable success in combating the epidemic, recently meeting…

BACKGROUND: Despite a significant reduction in the burden of malaria in the last decades, the disease remains a significant global public health threat. Community perception, knowledge, and practices are key determinants in malaria transmission. Mudzi is a border district in Zimbabwe, characterized by persistent malaria transmission despite having high indoor residual spraying coverages that meet the World Health Organization (WHO) indoor residual spraying (IRS) coverage thresholds. Human socio-economic behavioural factors driving persistent transmission have not been documented.
METHODS: A m…

INTRODUCTION: Gutu, a rural district in Zimbabwe, has been implementing comprehensive HIV care with the support of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) since 2011, decentralizing testing and treatment services to all rural healthcare facilities. We evaluated HIV prevalence, incidence and the cascade of care, in Gutu District five years after MSF began its activities.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was implemented between September and December 2016. Using multistage cluster sampling, individuals aged ≥15 years living in the selected households were eligible. Individuals who agreed to participate …

Numerous unknown factors influence anthrax epidemiology in multi-host systems, especially at wildlife/livestock/human interfaces. Serology tests for anti-anthrax antibodies in carnivores are useful tools in identifying the presence or absence of Bacillus anthracis in a range. These were employed to ascertain whether the disease pattern followed the recognized high- and low-risk anthrax zonation in Zimbabwe and also to establish whether anthrax was absent from Hwange National Park in which there have been no reported outbreaks. African lions (Panthera leo) (n = 114) drawn from free-range protec…

BACKGROUND: Despite high antiretroviral (ARV) treatment coverage among pregnant women for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in Zimbabwe, the MTCT rate is still high. Therefore in 2016, the country adopted World Health Organization recommendations of stratifying pregnant women into "High" or"Low" MTCT risk for subsequent provision of HIV exposed infant (HEI) with appropriate follow-up care according to risk status.
OBJECTIVE: The study sought to ascertain, among pregnant women who delivered in clinics of Harare in August 2017: the extent t…

Targeted HIV interventions for female sex workers (FSW) combine biomedical technologies, behavioural change and community mobilization with the aim of empowering FSW and improving prevention and treatment. Understanding how to deliver combined interventions most effectively in sub-Saharan Africa is critical to the HIV response. The Sisters' Antiretroviral Programme for Prevention of HIV: an Integrated Response (SAPPH-Ire) randomized controlled trial in Zimbabwe tested an intervention to improve FSW engagement with HIV services. After 2 years, results of the trial showed no significant differen…

IMPORTANCE: HIV self-testing is a promising approach for increasing awareness of HIV status in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Zimbabwe, where HIV prevalence is 13%. Evidence is lacking, however, on the optimal pricing policies and delivery strategies for maximizing the effect of HIV self-testing.
OBJECTIVE: To assess demand for HIV self-testing among adults and priority-population subgroups under alternative pricing and distribution strategies.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This randomized clinical trial recruited study participants between February 15, 2018, and April 25, 2018, in…

BACKGROUND: The rise in cervical cancer trends in the past two decades has coincided with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic especially in the sub-Saharan African region. Young people (15 to 24 years old) are associated with many risk factors such as multiple sexual partners, early sexual debut, and high HIV incidences, which increase the chances of developing cervical cancer. The National Cancer Prevention and Control Strategy for Zimbabwe (2014-2018) highlights that no cancer communication strategy focusing on risk factors as primary cancer prevention. Therefore, the study aims …

INTRODUCTION: This study provides, for the first time, comparable national population-based estimates that describe the nature and magnitude of physical and emotional violence during childhood in Zimbabwe.
METHODS: From August to September 2011, we conducted a national population-based survey of 2410 respondents aged 13-24 years, using a two-stage cluster sampling. Regression models were adjusted for relevant demographics to estimate the ORs for associations between violence, risk factors and various health-related outcomes.
RESULTS: Respondents aged 18-24 years report a lifetime prevalence …

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a broad concept reflecting a patient's general subjective perception of the effect of an illness or intervention on physical, psychological and social aspects of their daily life. HRQoL among patients infected with HIV has become an important indicator of impact of disease and treatment outcomes. A cross-sectional survey was carried out at Chitungwiza Central Hospital, Zimbabwe, to assess HRQoL in patients with HIV/AIDS receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), using two validated instruments. The HIV/AIDS-targeted quality of life (HAT-QoL) and EuroQoL F…
