In mammals, severe and chronic deficiency of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) is associated with a characteristic neurological syndrome. Ataxia is a common and important neurological finding in medical practice. Severe deficiency of Vitamin E can profoundly affect the central nervous system and can cause ataxia and peripheral neuropathy resembling Friedreich's ataxia. Vitamin E deficiency can occur with abetalipoproteinemia, cholestatic liver disease or fat malabsorption. Ataxia with isolated Vit E deficiency (AVED) is an Autosomal Recessive genetic disorder with a mutation in the alpha tocopherol transfer protein gene (TTPA). This condition responds to high dose of Vit E and is one of the important causes of treatable ataxia.

The effect of vitamin E on chromosomal aberrations and mutation caused by Na2CrO4 was investigated in Chinese hamster V79 cells. Pretreatment with 25 microM alpha-tocopherol succinate (vitamin E) for 24 h prior to chromate exposure (2.5-5 microM) resulted in a decrease of metal-induced chromosomal aberrations. The study assessed selected parameters of redox status in the plasma of patients suffering from high myopia (HM). Cannabis as a therapeutic agent is increasing in popularity all around the globe, particularly in Western countries, and its potential is now well assessed. On the other hand, each country has its own regulation for the preparation of cannabis macerated oils; in Italy, there are only a few preparation methods allowed. With this work, we aim to perform a stability study of cannabis oils produced with a novel method for the extraction of cannabinoids from cannabis inflorescence. Three different varieties of cannabis were used, with and without the adding of tocopherol acetate as an antioxidant.

An electron spin resonance technique was used to measure cerebral antioxidant activity during asphyxial cardiac arrest and reperfusion. There were significant decreases in ascorbate (48%), glutathione (44%), total thiols (42%), protein thiols (38%) and alpha-tocopherol (26%) in the hippocampus 10 min after reperfusion (p < 0.05 vs respective baselines) but not during asphyxial cardiac arrest.
