We examined the possible role of autonomic activity in Huntington's disease (HD) during a risky decision making task. Skin conductance responses (SCRs) of 15 HD participants and 16 healthy controls were measured while they performed a computerized version of the Simulated Gambling Task (SGT). The results replicated our previous finding of a performance decrement in HD, and showed that HD was associated with an altered pattern of SCRs during the risky decision task. Specifically, the healthy controls produced increased SCRs following selections from the disadvantageous decks and following losin

Neuropathy, one of the most common diabetes complications, is characterized by highly variable clinical picture. It is not established what evaluation scheme should be applied in the assessment of patient regarding diabetic neuropathy. The validity of various laboratory tests in the diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy also remains unclear. This paper describes different clinical manifestations of diabetic neuropathy and presents the most important methods of assessment of patients with neuropathy suspected based on literature data and authors' observations. Authors highlighted the implications of

The study focused on the prediction of autonomic reactivity to public speaking by using self-report and objective data (other-ratings and behavioral data) of task-induced nervousness and task engagement. Forty-one individuals participated in the study. Heart rate and electrodermal activity were recorded during baseline and speech delivery. Stepwise multiple regression analyses indicated that self-report data of task engagement and nervousness largely failed in predicting psychophysiological reactivity to the speech task. After controlling for baseline values, demographic variables, and self-re

This article describes current information concerning analyses of contraction and relaxation associated with electrical stimulation of efferent nerves in isolated mammalian sphincter muscles. Contractile responses of sphincters are mediated by alpha 1-adrenoceptors and muscarinic receptors stimulated by transmitters from adrenergic and cholinergic nerves, respectively, whereas those of the bladder body are almost exclusively mediated by transmitters from parasympathetic nerves. Relaxant responses to nerve stimulation are ascribed mainly to mechanisms that are sensitive and resistant to nitric

With an aid of an ultrasound investigation of the heart, aspects of central hemodynamics in 408 juveniles ranging in age between 11 to 14 years have been studied. Of these, 339 were diagnosed as having hypotensive type vegetovascular dysfunction, the other 69 essentially healthy juveniles formed a control group signs of systolic and diastolic dysfunction of the myocardium of the left ventricle revealed in the patients with hypotensive type vegetovascular dysfunction. Systolic dysfunction was compensated by increase in the rate of the heart's beat. Compensation of diastolic dysfunction was achi

In Germany, some 4-6 million men, including 1.2 million diabetics, suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED). Various other diseases including heart disease, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, hyperlipidemia, endocrine disorders, chronic renal insufficiency, prior radical prostatectomy, neurological diseases, trauma and the abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and side effects of medications, are frequently associated with ED. Medical history, clinical examination, routine blood chemistry and sexual hormone levels may help clarify the etiology of ED. Normally, relaxation of the smooth muscles of the corpus cav

The main disorders in juveniles who are resident in the zone of small doses of ionizing radiation are vegetative dysfunctions. Of these, there prevail vegetovascular dysfunction comprising 45.7%, with neurocirculatory and vegetovisceral dysfunctions occurring less frequently (26.3% and 19.7% respectively). The major proportion of juveniles present with neurosis-like states, asthenic and asthenodepressive ones being the most common type.

AIM: We conducted a study to investigate whether patients with somatization disorder show abnormal values in autonomic testing, especially in the central baroreceptor sensitivity.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy-one patients were included. All had a diagnosis of somatization disorder (ICD-10, F45.0). Psychometric testing was performed by means of validated questionnaires (STAI, STAXI, FPI, GBB, ADS, SOMS, SCL-90-R). Autonomic regulation was analyzed by international standards using frequency spectral calculation by fast Fourier transformation. Thereby 3 different groups were detected: 12 patien

Nasal sensory nerve stimulation leads to sensations of pain and congestion and nociceptive nerve axon response-mediated release of substance P that stimulates glandular secretion as an immediate-acting protective mucosal defense. Recruited parasympathetic reflexes cause submucosal gland secretion via muscarinic M3 receptors. Parasympathetic reflexes, sneezing, and other avoidance behaviors rapidly clear the upper airway of offending agents while protecting the lower airways. Dysfunction contributes to allergic, infectious, and other nonallergic rhinitides and possibly sinusitis. Sympathetic ar

Permanent magnetic field was applied by placing two magnetic discs (induction 60 mT) in the projection of great arteries on both sides symmetrically. The treatment was given to hypertensive patients with vegetovascular asthenia. A course of such magnetic treatment affects pathogenetic mechanisms of vegetative disorders due to the ability of permanent magnetic field to restore vegetative homeostasis, normalize sympathicotony and vegetative regulation.

INTRODUCTION: Preservation of sexual function and voiding capacity after rectal cancer surgery has increased after adopting the technique of nerve-sparing dissection and total mesorectal excision. Still the rate of sexual and urinary dysfunction ranges between 25 and 67%. The precise locations where nerve damage occurs have not been looked at systematically.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In ten human corpses and two formalin-fixed human pelvises the autonomous pelvic nerves were isolated. Their relation according to surgical mobilization of the rectum were photodocumented.
RESULTS: Pelvic autonomous

Hypertension, bradycardia, and severe headache have been associated with autonomic dysreflexia. Autonomic dysreflexia affects those with spinal transection above the level of T6 after plastic changes of the afferent pathways. This restructuring in the presence of noxious stimuli below the level of the lesion leads to autonomic dysreflexia. The onset of the first episode of autonomic dysreflexia has been documented as soon as 30 days and as late as 13 years after the injury. This report presents a case study of a paraplegic man 8 years after injury with autonomic dysreflexia associated with a u

The data concerning the skin capillaries biomicroscopy in 102 patients with neurological complications of vertebral osteochondrosis were adduced. The presence of stable intense pain syndrome, prominent paresis of the extremities in concurrence with significant delay of blood flow up to the erythrocytic stasis in capillaries on the damage side, significant oedema of the skin papillary layer, the capillaries deformity, the vegetative microcirculatory reactions delay on external stimulants served as indications for surgical intervention performance.

The hypothesis that the maximal response to pCO2 of carotid body chemoreceptors would be the same regardless of pO2, if the receptor molecule behaves like a hemoglobin molecule, was investigated using single or a few fiber carotid body chemoreceptors in cats in vivo which were anesthetized and artificially ventilated. In one series, graded levels of CO2 inhalation in steady-state at p(a)O2 = 354 +/- 19 Torr showed a linear response from 1 to 20.1 +/- 2.3 imp/s for p(a)CO2 increase from 32 to 178 +/- 18 Torr, and at p(a)O2 of 48 +/- 3.8 Torr, from 3.8 to 18.6 +/- 1.7 imp/s for p(a)CO2 increase

The relationship between autonomic nervous system activity (ANA) and coronary vasoreactivity during transient myocardial ischemia was determined in patients with vasospastic angina (VA). ANA was measured by power spectral analysis of heart rate variability and humoral factors following intravenous infusion of insulin in 24 patients with VA and 6 control patients. Nine (38%) of the VA patients had significant ST segment depression (STD), and 4 of these patients had symptomatic STD. The frequency of anginal episodes in the 9 patients with VA and STD was significantly greater than that in the 15 …

The present study examined resting heart rate variability (HRV; an index of parasympathetic tone) and heart rate response to the Valsalva maneuver (Valsalva ratio; an index of overall autonomic responsiveness) in 12 repeat users of 3.4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, "Ecstasy"), and a matched comparison group of presumed nonusers. HRV and Valsalva ratio were smaller in users than in controls. Three out of 12 MDMA users but no controls had Valsalva ratios below 1.50, the cut-off for autonomic dysfunction. In several users, there was a total absence of post-Valsalva release bradycardia. All
