OBJECTIVE: We describe 2 cases of intraoperative cervical plate screw loosening treated by modified screw augmentation using polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), which used the anchoring effect of hardened PMMA.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Intraoperative screw loosening during cervical plating is not rare. PMMA augmentation for a damaged pilot hole is one of the rescue techniques in such a case.

The authors used 2 techniques that are commonly used in finger operations: One is the pins and rubber band traction system, and the other is the hook plate osteosynthesis. Mucopolysaccharidoses are a group of lysosomal storage diseases characterized by the build-up of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and severe skeletal abnormalities. Forty-seven patients with open lateral malleolar (AO type-B2) fractures treated with copious irrigation and radical debridement, reduction, and immediate fixation by Knowles pins or lateral plates were retrospectively reviewed with an average follow-up period of 29 months. The deep branch of the ulnar nerve may be injured at the same time as fracture dislocations of the fifth metacarpal. We describe injuries to that nerve in two patients with dislocated fractures of the second or third and fourth metacarpals. The fractures were treated by open reduction and fixation with plates and screws, and it is possible that the repositioning and fixing caused the injury.

The senior author's 12-year consecutive series of surgery for metastatic disease of the femur was reviewed. In this study a series of 41 consecutive cases of operatively treated fractures of the tibial plafond was retrospectively analysed. The fractures were classified into types I (9.75%), II (41.5%) and III (48.75%) as defined by Rüedi. The 10-year average follow-up revealed 66% good and 24% fair objective results overall. The unstable intertrochanteric/subtrochanteric fracture, as identified by the modified Müller classification, should be considered a separate entity with its own problems. It can be highly unstable; none of the orthopedic appliances has been designed with this fracture in mind. Compression screws yield better results than Enders rods in these fractures. Results of bone grafting in ten cases of primary mandibular reconstruction using rib grafts and 62 cases of secondary mandibular reconstruction using iliac bone grafts or rib transplants are reported. Two (20%) of the primary transplants were lost and one of the secondary transplants was totally lost and another was partially lost (3.2%) because of infection. All other transplants healed without infection. Pseudarthrosis was observed in 30% of the cases after primary reconstruction and in 15% of the cases after secondary reconstruction.

In vivo temperature measurements were performed at drilling in the femoral cortex of the rabbit, dog and man. In the clinical study the bone temperature was measured at fixation of a Richards plate to stabilize a pertrochanteric fracture. The authors present a case of a distal radius fracture associated with a comminutive fracture of the ulna head, treated by volar locking plate for the radius fracture and ulnar head resection. We obtain an early good objective and subjective functional result, whereas this type of fracture is classically associated with bad results in the series published with other treatments. INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Adamantinomas are rare, low-grade, malignant skeletal tumors accounting for only 0.33-0.48 % of primary malignant bone tumors.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old boy with adamantinoma of the ulna was treated with en bloc resection, kryptonite bone cement, and plate fixation. The surgery resulted in marked pain relief and good functional recovery. No evidence of recurrence was observed for 5 years postoperatively, and the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society score was 93.
