Salviae miltiorrhizae radix et rhizoma is a traditional herbal medicine with anti-cancer activities. We have defined a human breast tumor associated antigen using a murine monoclonal antibody (MAb DF3) prepared against a membrane-enriched fraction of a human breast carcinoma. This antigen has a MW of 290 kD and is detectable on the cell surface of human breast carcinoma cells using a live cell radioimmunoassay and fluorescence flow cytometry. The survey of sources presented discusses the results of the research on lipid metabolism in cases of such a common disease as acute and chronic cholecystitis. The application of modern analytical methods for studying individual lipids of different classes enabled to acquire a better comprehension of metabolism of these major cell membrane components and the main gall-bladder compounds--biliary acids. This study was conducted to evaluate morphometrically the microscopic components of the testis in cases of varicocele, the leading cause of male infertility, with the aim to identify consistent differences from controls. In our specimens of patients with varicocele, the vascular and interstitial fractions, as well as the Leydig cell count, were significantly increased. Our data support the notion that the interstitium is the testicular compartment most consistently affected and that the damage to the tubules is erratic and probably late.

The cellular changes which lead to the increase of drug-metabolizing enzymes following drug administration are explained by correlating new biochemical data with previously reported electron microscopic and pharmacologic observations. Repeated administration of phenobarbital and several other drugs results in a quantitative increase of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum of the liver cell. The marked increase in drug-metabolizing enzymes is found to occur in this enlarged smooth membrane fraction of the endoplasmic reticulum.
