Trends in pediatric traumatic brain injury-related mortality in the United States from 1999 to 2024: a retrospective cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric traumatic brain injury (pTBI) remains a preventable cause of death among U.S. children and adolescents. Prior national CDC WONDER-based analyses described pTBI mortality through 2017; however, updated surveillance is needed to evaluate post-2017 and post-2020 trends. METHODS: We conducted a population-based repeated cross-sectional analysis using the CDC WONDER Multiple Cause of Death data from 1999 to 2024 among U.S. residents aged 0-19 years with pTBI-related ICD-10 codes recorded anywhere on the death certificate. Crude mortality rates (CMRs) per 1 000 000 population

A mixed-methods study of methodological approaches in population-based cancer registries in the North and South.

INTRODUCTION: Population-based cancer registries (PBCRs) are essential for cancer surveillance; reliable and comparable data depending on both methodological standards and operational organization. While international guidelines define core quality indicators, less is known about how governance structures and registry workflows influence data quality across different healthcare settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a convergent mixed-methods study involving seven PBCRs: six in Colombia and one in Haute-Vienne, France. Breast cancer was used as a model disease. Quantitative analyses ev

An analysis of heart failure among cancer patients in the United States between 1999 and 2020.

BACKGROUND: Cancer and heart failure (HF) are highly prevalent in the population and can co-exist, due to shared risk factors and an aging population. The HF-related mortality burden in cancer patients across in the United States (US) remains poorly understood. The goal of this study is to evaluate the patterns of HF-related deaths among cancer patients in the United States. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) WONDER Multiple Cause of Death database between years 1999 and 2020. HF-related deaths were defined as death certi

The effects of asymmetrical versus symmetrical high-flow nasal cannula on respiratory muscle activity in acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A randomised crossover study.

BACKGROUND: High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is standard therapy for acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure and is increasingly used in hypercapnic COPD. Comparative data between the asymmetrical and conventional HFNC interfaces regarding respiratory muscle work of breathing is limited. This study aimed to compare the effects of both HFNC interfaces on diaphragm and parasternal intercostal thickening fraction (TFdi and TFpi), and other physiological variables. METHODS: This randomised crossover study enrolled two cohorts: 20 subjects with acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure and 18 subjects with

Trends and inequities in peptic ulcer mortality across the United States, 1999-2023.

BACKGROUND: Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) remains a cause of gastrointestinal mortality despite advances in Helicobacter pylori eradication and gastroprotection. METHODS: We analyzed U.S. death certificates in CDC WONDER from 1999 to 2023, using Underlying Cause-of-Death files. Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs; per 100,000) were standardized to the 2000 U.S. POPULATION: Trends used average annual percent change (AAPC). Analyses were stratified by sex, age, race/ethnicity, region, urban-rural status, and ICD-10 subtype (K25-K28). RESULTS: From 1999 to 2023, there were 87,574 PUD deaths. Annu

National mortality trends due to OSA and respiratory failure in U.S adults from 1999-2023: Insights from the CDC-WONDER database.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and respiratory failure (RF) represent increasing clinical and public health challenges in the United States, yet national trends in mortality remain underexplored. This study evaluates trends in mortality associated with OSA and RF to highlight targeted prevention and management across demographics and regions. Using the CDC WONDER multiple cause of death (MCD) database, we retrieved death certificates from 1999 to 2023 to analyze mortality related to OSA and RF among adults aged ≥ 25 years. Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) per 100,000 were calculated and cat

Trends in Diarrhea-associated Mortality in Children Less Than 5 Years of Age in the United States, 2005-2024.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of rotavirus vaccines in the United States in 2006 and 2008 has had large impacts on reducing rotavirus- and diarrhea-associated healthcare utilization. We evaluated changes in diarrhea-associated mortality from 2005 to 2024 among children 1-59 months of age. METHODS: We examined diarrhea-associated deaths, identified by International Classification and Diagnostic codes related to diarrhea listed anywhere on the death certificate, reported to the National Center for Health Statistics from 2005 to 2024. Diarrhea-associated death rates were calculated using national

The community drug distributor passport: a case study of training and recognition in Chad.

INTRODUCTION: Community health workers (CHWs), particularly volunteer community drug distributors (CDDs), play essential roles in advancing universal health coverage (UHC) and neglected tropical disease (NTD) control, yet their responsibilities and formal recognition remain poorly defined across health systems. This creates policy-implementation disconnects, especially during mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns for schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases, where CDDs deliver critical services amid declining motivation and weak community awareness. METHODS: From 15 September 202

Staphylococcus aureus Burden in Frozen, Precooked Tuna Loins and Growth Behavior During Typical and "Worst-case" Processing Conditions.

FDA's Seafood HACCP Guidance (SHG) recommends a cumulative exposure time limit of 3 h if product temperature exceeds 21.1 °C (70°F) to minimize the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and prevent staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) production. This time limit is insufficient to practically accomplish postthawing activities (e.g., packing, brining, sealing, retort staging, and time for the center of the can to reach the critical temperature of 50 °C (122°F)). The documented evidence supporting the establishment of this exposure time recommendation is minimal and mostly irrelevant to tuna. The goal

Drug overdose deaths in Kentucky, 2019-2024: are we back to Pre-COVID-19 levels?

BACKGROUND: Kentucky has historically experienced a high burden of drug overdose deaths. During the first years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the state saw a 45% increase in overdose deaths in 2020, followed by an additional 15% increase in 2021. However, drug overdose deaths declined in 2023 and 2024. This study used electronic death certificate records from the Kentucky Office of Vital Statistics (2019-2024) to evaluate whether Kentucky's 2024 drug overdose death rates have declined to pre-pandemic levels and if declines were observed across all demographic groups. The results from Poisson regre
