[Executive functioning in unipolar depression: a review].

While several neuropsychological studies have demonstrated that cognitive deficits are seen across a broad range of cognitive domains, executive deficits associated with frontal lobe dysfunction may be prominent in depression. Executive function refers to cognitive processes that control and integrate other cognitive activities such as episodic memory. These executive functions involve a set of cognitive behaviors which include: dealing with novelty, selecting strategies, inhibiting incorrect responses, monitoring performance and using feedback to adjust future responding. The measurement of e

[Cognitive and linguistic indexes in children with early hemispheric lesion].

Prospective studies of development following early focal brain injury have identified deficits across a range of cognitive, linguistic and affective domains. In most cases these deficits are quite subtle and often not detected on standardized behavioral tests. Nonetheless, more detailed tests of neuropsychological functioning have documented subtle, persistent profiles of impairment. These contrasting findings have been cited in defense of two conflicting beliefs: plasticity and hemispheric equipotentiality theories on one side and early hemispheric specialization on the other. This paper show

Theory of mind abilities of children with schizophrenia, children with autism, and normally developing children.

Theory of mind (ToM) abilities of children with schizophrenia, children with high functioning autism, and normally developing children, matched on mental age (MA), verbal MA, and performance MA, were compared. Both clinical groups were matched on chronological age as well, whereas the normally developing children were younger. A fact belief task, a value belief task, a deception task, and a false belief task were administered. The three groups did not differ on the fact belief task. Children with autism performed more poorly than normally developing children on value belief and false belief ta

[Syncopal consciousness disorders and drop attacks from the neurologic viewpoint].

The most important neurological disorders leading to syncope and/or drop attack are presented. With respect to epilepsy it is important to consider generalized absence seizures (petit mal), generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal) and some types of complex partial seizures. Additionally, some sleep and arousal disorders must be mentioned, such as narcolepsy, disorders of excessive somnolence associated with sleep-induced respiratory impairment, as well as the Kleine-Levin-Critchley syndrome. Vagotonic, asympathicotonic, sympathicotonic and central autonomic disorders are comprised in the

Aggravated CNS depression with urinary retention secondary to baclofen administration.

A 74-year-old woman with a history of cerebrovascular disease developed profound central nervous system (CNS) and respiratory depression, generalized hypotonia, sinus bradycardia, and urinary retention following an increase in dose of baclofen, an antispasticity agent. Before receiving baclofen therapy the patient had had minor urinary dysfunction associated with a remote cerebrovascular accident but no urinary retention. Cessation of baclofen therapy and the relief of the urinary obstruction improved mental status and normalized motor function within 24 hours. A withdrawal syndrome of agitati

Psychotherapeutic options for traumatized children.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review addresses two issues. First, it updates readers on new treatments for traumatized children. Second, it examines the breadth of target problems that current evidence-based treatments for child posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) effectively address in the context of current diagnostic uncertainty. Specifically, changes have been proposed to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) diagnostic criteria for PTSD and a proposal has been submitted to add a new developmental trauma disorder to optimally describe the range of ou

Free recall and forgetting of emotionally arousing words in autism spectrum disorder.

Since the earliest descriptions of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) abnormalities in affective behaviours have been considered a prominent feature in their clinical manifestations. What remains unclear, however, is whether these altered emotional behaviours are a mere facet of abnormalities in socio-cognitive processes or whether they constitute a primary feature of the condition. A number of studies now indicate that emotional processing atypicalities in ASD extend to domains outside the broader context of social cognition leading us to suggest that the disorder may be charac

Sexual functioning and disordered eating: A new perspective.

Fears about sexual maturity and intimacy were among early explanations for the etiology of eating disorders and related concerns, and research with clinical samples revealed a relationship between eating disorders and atypical sexual experiences. In contrast, feminist scholars offer explanations for both eating disorders and sexual dysfunction that emphasize societal pressures. As an alternative approach to understanding these difficulties, the authors empirically explored the relationship between the cognitive and affective aspects of sexuality and disordered eating among a nonclinical sample

[Neurocognitive functioning after cognitive treatment in post-COVID].

BACKGROUND: Post-COVID is a post-infectious condition resulting from COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) that can cause a wide range of neurocognitive and psychological symptoms. As no curative treatment currently exists, it is important to help patients learn how to manage their symptoms. AIM: To examine whether adults with post-COVID benefit from a treatment program focused on cognitive resilience, in terms of cognitive functioning and psychological symptoms. METHOD: A pre-post design without a control group was used within a mental health care setting. Twenty-three participants with post-COVID complete

Improvement of age-related neurocognitive disorders by Ginkgo biloba extract: neuroprotection in focus.

Oxidative stress and enhanced free radical production with subsequent mitochondrial dysfunction and neurodegeneration are major pathomechanisms for the ageing spectrum of neurocognitive disorders ranging from subjective cognitive decline over mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and vascular dementia (VD). Due to its radical scavenging, antioxidative and mitochondrial function-improving properties standardised Ginkgo biloba extracts (GBE) target several key processes of neurodegeneration. These include mitochondrial dysfunction, imp

Hippocampal neurogenesis: Bridging stress, cognitive decline, and therapeutic strategies for neural health.

The hippocampus plays a critical role in spatial and contextual learning, and its age-related decline significantly contributes to cognitive impairment. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN), the continuous production of new neurons in the dentate gyrus, provides a unique form of structural plasticity essential for lifelong learning and memory. AHN is notably altered in various neurodegenerative and mental health disorders characterized by cognitive deficits, suggesting its crucial involvement in maintaining neuronal populations and endogenous regenerative capacity. Given the emerging links bet

The neural systems of emotion regulation and abnormalities in major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a mental disorder characterized by aberrant emotion regulation. The capacity for emotion regulation stems from diverse neural circuits including higher level cognitive structures involved in processing contextual information, and lower level limbic structures involved in triggering emotional expression. Cognitive theories of depression posit that the MDD-specific abnormalities in emotional control derive itself from dysfunctional cognitive processes including biased attention, rumination, and altered information processing and memory. The main objectives of t

Unveiling the impact of siren noise exposure on cognitive function and mental health among firefighters.

Firefighters reside in inherently noisy environments with sirens and emergency alarms. This noise can negatively affect the performance of firefighters and further pose a safety risk. This study investigates the relationship between siren noise exposure and its mental health disorders. In doing so, the study focuses on cognitive function among firefighters, using a Bayesian network model for the first time. This case-control study involved 92 firefighters and was conducted in 2023. Participants were categorized into case and control groups based on their exposure levels to siren noise. Noise e

Topiramate impairs cognitive function in methadone-maintained individuals with concurrent cocaine dependence.

Topiramate is being investigated as a potential pharmacotherapy for the treatment of addictive disorders. However, its cognitive side effects raise concerns about its use, especially in populations with cognitive impairment, such as persons with chronic substance use disorders. This study investigated topiramate's cognitive effects in individuals dually dependent on cocaine and opioids as part of a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial of topiramate for cocaine dependence treatment. After 5 weeks of stabilization on daily oral methadone (M = 96 mg), participants were randomized to topiram

The effects of sleep dysfunction on cognition, affect, and quality of life in individuals with cerebellar ataxia.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Cerebellar ataxia comprises a group of debilitating diseases that are the result of progressive cerebellar degeneration. Recent studies suggest that, like other neurodegenerative diseases, sleep impairments are common in cerebellar ataxia. In light of the role of sleep in mood regulation and cognition, we sought to assess interactions between sleep, cognition, and affect in individuals with cerebellar ataxia. METHODS: A survey of 176 individuals with cerebellar ataxia was conducted. The battery of instruments included a modified International Cooperative Ataxia Rating Scale,

Cognitive inflexibility and heightened error monitoring are related to lower sexual functioning.

Sexual functioning is an important predictor of well-being and relationship satisfaction. Previous research indicates that several aspects of cognitive function are related to sex-related behaviors and functioning among individuals with sex-related disorders, neurological disorders, and in older adults; however, this has been relatively underexamined in younger populations. To examine this, the present study assessed whether behavioral and/or neurophysiological measures of cognitive function are associated with sexual functioning in a community sample of young 489 adults (64 % female) ages 18-

The 5 choice continuous performance test (5C-CPT): A novel tool to assess cognitive control across species.

BACKGROUND: Neurodevelopmental disorders including Tourette's syndrome (TS) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are characterized by significant impairment in attention and cognitive control. These cognitive deficits persist throughout development, contribute significantly to socio-occupational impairment, and are relatively impervious to available treatment. A critical challenge in pro-cognitive drug discovery is translatability of findings across species, underscoring the need for developing valid and reliable cross-species cognitive tasks. NEW METHOD: Here we describe a cro

Generalised anxiety disorder.

Generalised anxiety disorder is a persistent and common disorder, in which the patient has unfocused worry and anxiety that is not connected to recent stressful events, although it can be aggravated by certain situations. This disorder is twice as common in women than it is in men. Generalised anxiety disorder is characterised by feelings of threat, restlessness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and tension, and symptoms such as palpitations, dry mouth, and sweating. These symptoms are recognised as part of the anxiety syndrome rather than independent complaints. The symptoms overlap greatly w
