In June, 2002, the government of Dominica requested assistance in evaluating the coral culture and transplantation activities being undertaken by Oceanographic Institute of Dominica (OID), a coral farm culturing both western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific corals for restoration and commercial sales. We assessed the culture facilities of OID, the condition of reefs, potential impacts of coral collection and benefits of coral transplantation. Osteopetrosis and the absence of colony-stimulating factor 1 (CSF-1) in op/op mice are associated with decreased cellularity of the bone marrow (to one tenth of the normal), a very significant reduction in the number of cells recovered from peritoneal, pleural, and alveolar lavages, moderate leukopenia, and a slight decrease in the number of cells per spleen and thymus. MULi001-A is a human induced pluripotent stem cell line derived from urinary tract epithelial cells of a patient carrying a heterozygous germline ETV6 p.Pro214Leu mutation associated with Thrombocytopenia 5 and leukemia predisposition. Pluripotency was confirmed by colony morphology, expression of canonical pluripotency markers, maintenance of a normal karyotype, and trilineage differentiation capacity. This line provides a cellular resource for studying ETV6-related hematopoietic disorders and malignant transformations.

Small-colony variants (SCVs) were obtained from an Enterobacter cloacae clinical isolate in Okinawa, Japan. One variant showed auxotrophy for hemin with a deletion of 20 365 nucleotides, dosC-ydiK-mmuP-mmuM-tauA-tauB-tauC-tauD-hemB-yaiT-yaiV-ampH-yddQ-sbmA-yaiW-yaiY-yaiZ, including hemB, and was more resistant to aminoglycosides and carbapenems, but more susceptible to aztreonam, than the parent strain.

We present the case of a 43-year-old woman with a diagnosis of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, on chronic treatment with sargramostim, a recombinant granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, who presented with the nephrotic syndrome secondary to biopsy-proven membranous nephropathy. We discuss potential underlying mechanisms, including speculated effects of sargramostim on mesangial cells and the kidney resident macrophages, and review the existing literature on the potential association between these two disorders.

We describe the first case of white grain pedal eumycetoma caused by Phaeoacremonium krajdenii in a 41-year-old man from Goa, India. Based on histological examination of biopsy tissue showing serpentine granules, a culture of the granules yielding phaeoid fungal colonies, and morphological characteristics and sequence comparison of the partial beta-tubulin gene with the ex-type isolate of P. krajdenii, the causal agent was identified as P. krajdenii.

We present a case of primary pulmonary mucormycosis infection in a renal transplant recipient diagnosed serendipitously by computed tomography scan. Treatment included discontinuation of immunosuppressive regimen, initiation of antifungal therapy with amphotericin B lipid complex, administration of granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor, surgical excision of the involved lobe, and outpatient treatment with amphotericin B with dialysis. The patient ultimately required transplant nephrectomy as a result of immunosuppression discontinuation.

We report a case of terbinafine-induced agranulocytosis in a pediatric patient. This effect was noted 4 weeks after starting terbinafine and resolved within 1 week without the institution of therapy with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, a course similar to reports in adults. With the incidence of severe side effects still unclear in children, this case argues for continued blood surveillance during courses of terbinafine and for the confirmation of infection before initiation of the drug.

A 63-year-old man with a history of transient ischemic attack had been treated with ticlopidine for 2 months. He presented with a 6-day history of fever, sore throat, and generalized weakness. Agranulocytosis and anemia due to ticlopidine was diagnosed, and the ticlopidine was discontinued. Broad-spectrum antibiotics and granulocyte colony stimulating factor were administered. The recovery of the granulocyte count and an improvement of the clinical condition were noted on the 6th day of the admission.

An investigation into the cause of acute mortality in farmed hatchling crocodiles Crocodylus niloticus led to the isolation of chlamydia from the livers of affected animals. Prominent pathological finds were acute hepatitis with intracellular chlamydial colonies and generalized oedema. A chlamydia presumed to be C. psittaci was isolated from livers of affected hatchlings. Mortality subsided after treatment with oxytetracycline. This disease is now recognized as being a major problem on crocodile farms in Zimbabwe.

We describe a patient with viral induced aplastic anemia who developed severe bone pain after treatment with multiple courses of antithymocyte globulin, cyclosporine A, recombinant human granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor and deferoxamine. Radiographs and bone biopsy revealed extensive new trabecular bone formation in long bone diaphyses and adjacent periosteal reaction. The effects of hematopoietic growth factors, cyclosporine A and deferoxamine on bone metabolism are reviewed.

Synthesis of heteroaryl-ONN-azoxysulphones and pyrazolyl-ONN-azoxycyanides was carried out by the action of the appropriate reagents on the corresponding nitroso derivatives. Pyrazolyl-ONN-azoxyamides were obtained by hydrolysis of the corresponding cyanides. Synthesis of the arylsulphonylhydrazones was carried out by reacting R-substituted phenyl-sulphonylhydrazines on the isomers of methylfuroxancarbaldehyde. Cytotoxic activity was assessed on HeLa cells. Some of the compounds tested inhibit the colony-forming ability of the tumor cells at low concentrations.

A new mutation, affecting skin and hair, occurred in an expansion colony of Him:OF1 mice. Test crosses showed that a single autosomal recessive gene was responsible for this trait. Homozygotes have sparse greasy fur and lower viability and fertility than normal littermates. Histological observations showed hypertrophy of sebaceous glands, hyperkeratosis, parakeratosis, acanthosis and signs of inflammation. The disease was named 'inherited seborrheic dermatitis' and the gene name seb is proposed.

An inbred colony of narcoleptic doberman pinschers has been analyzed for muscarinic receptor levels in 19 discrete brain regions. In comparison to age-matched controls, receptors were generally elevated in the brainstem and reduced in forebrain areas. No changes in receptor binding affinity were detected. The increased receptor levels found in the brainstem suggest that cholinoceptive neurons in this region are hypersensitive and may be involved in the initiation of cataplexy and other aspects of the narcolepsy syndrome.

In the last 17 years, 55 of 2,125 (2.6%) purebred beagles maintained in a closed colony had urolithiasis. Males comprised 72.7% of the affected animals. All the uroliths except one set in the kidneys were in the urinary bladder, the urethra, or both. All uroliths were nearly pure magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate. Partially inbred beagles had a 10.7% incidence of urolithiasis, compared to a 2.0% incidence in an outbred line.

Abnormalities in cerebrospinal fluid associated with meningitis due to Haemophilus influenzae type b were characterized in infant rats. After intranasal inoculation of bacteria, the development of intense bacteremia (greater than 10(4) colony-forming units/ml) correlated with cultures of cerebrospinal fluid positive for H. influenzae, with pleocytosis, and with hisotologic evidence of meningitis. The degree of pleocytosis was related to the age of the animal, the amount of time since inoculation, and the severity of the meningitis.

We recently isolated Candida auris from a blood culture and cutaneous swabs of a patient in her mid-70s. Our routine phenotypic methods failed to identify the microorganism, but it was identified by molecular tests and MALDI-TOF MS analysis. Our report, the first from Italy, further underlines the geographically wide distribution of C. auris and the need to confirm species identification of any suspicious colony as soon as possible to stop its spread.
