Assessment of Functional Mobility After COVID-19 in Adults Aged 50 Years or Older in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

IMPORTANCE: The association of COVID-19 not requiring hospitalization with functional mobility in community-dwelling adults above and beyond the impact of the pandemic control measures implemented in 2020 remains to be elucidated. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between a COVID-19 diagnosis and change in mobility and physical function of adults in Canada aged 50 years or older during the initial pandemic lockdown. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study used data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) COVID-19 study. This study was launched

Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2, Symptom Profiles and Sero-Neutralization in a Suburban Area, France.

The World Health Organisation recommends monitoring the circulation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). We investigated anti-SARS-CoV-2 total immunoglobulin (IgT) antibody seroprevalence and in vitro sero-neutralization in Nancy, France, in spring 2020. Individuals were randomly sampled from electoral lists and invited with household members over 5 years old to be tested for anti-SARS-CoV-2 (IgT, i.e., IgA/IgG/IgM) antibodies by ELISA (Bio-rad); the sero-neutralization activity was evaluated on Vero CCL-81 cells. Among 2006 individuals, the raw seroprevalence was 2

Exploring the young demographic profile of COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong: Evidence from migration and travel history data.

This paper investigates the profile of COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong, highlighting the unique age structure of confirmed cases compared to other territories. While the majority of cases in most territories around the world have fitted an older age profile, our analysis shows that positive cases in Hong Kong have been concentrated among younger age groups, with the largest incidence of cases reported in the 15-24 age group. This is despite the population's rapidly aging structure and extremely high levels of population density. Using detailed case data from Hong Kong's Centre for Health Departmen

Impact of Routine Quantiferon Testing on Latent Tuberculosis Diagnosis and Treatment in Refugees in Multnomah County, Oregon, November 2009-October 2012.

Interferon-gamma release assays have potentially been transformative to screening programs focused on latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in foreign-born persons. We sought to add to this assessment by presenting the impact of a well-established refugee screening and treatment program switching from skin testing to Quantiferon(®)-TB Gold (QFT). We completed a retrospective cohort of refugees screened for tuberculosis between November 1, 2009-April 30, 2011 (pre-QFT) and May 1, 2011-October 31, 2012 (post-QFT). Among 2244 refugees screened that met the inclusion criteria, there was a significa

Changes in epidemiological pattern of Meningococcal disease in Saudi Arabia. Does it constitute a new challenge for prevention and control?

OBJECTIVE: Meningococcal meningitis epidemics, which occurred in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) coincided with Hajj and Umra seasons; the 2 major pilgrims to Muslims. In many countries, the disease showed major changes of its epidemiological determinants, in particular to age and prevailing serogroup. This study was conducted to determine the epidemiological trend of meningococcal meningitis disease in KSA. METHODS: All confirmed meningococcal meningitis cases reported in KSA during the period from January 1999 to December 2002 were studied retrospectively. Confirmation of cases was based

Head lice diagnosed in general practice in the West Midlands between 1993 and 2000: a survey using the General Practice Research Database.

The potential of the General Practice Research Database (GPRD) for communicable disease surveillance was explored using head lice as an example. All diagnoses of head lice and prescriptions for parasiticidal agents from 1993 to 2000 in the West Midlands were analysed. Diagnoses reached a peak of 28.2 per 1,000 patient years at risk and total prescriptions reached a peak of 27.1 per 1,000 patient years at risk in 1997. Malathion and permethrin were prescribed most often. The proportion of further parasiticidal prescriptions issued within 30 days of the initial prescription increased to a peak o

Burden of non-communicable diseases and their attributable risk factors in Africa from 1990 to 2023: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: The rapid rise in the burden of non-communicable disease (NCDs) in African communities has resulted in a considerable mortality, disability, and economic burden. A comprehensive evaluation of incidence, deaths, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and attributable risk factors related to NCDs by sex, and geographical location is essential for informing policy decisions aimed at controlling these diseases. METHODS: This study used a comprehensive analysis based on the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023 methodology to estimate the incidence, mo

Relatively mild symptoms after chronic overdose with a double-dose encorafenib: a case report.

Encorafenib (Braftovi) is indicated for the treatment of adult patients with unresectable or metastatic melanoma with a BRAF V600 mutation, in combination with binimetinib (Mektovi). According to the product label of encorafenib, there are no specific treatment recommendations in case of an overdose. We report on a 63-year-old man who ingested a double dose (900 mg) of encorafenib for 16 days. He developed overall minor chronic overdose symptoms such as nausea and vomiting grade 1 and muscle pain. Based on the most occurring adverse events of encorafenib, liver values, kidney function paramete

The hidden dangers of staying home: a London trauma unit experience of lockdown during the COVID-19 virus pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in reconfiguration of the NHS. Elective services were stopped and trauma services focused on decreasing patient-clinician interactions and managing injuries nonoperatively wherever possible. The everyday life of the general public changed dramatically with the introduction of a national lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This paper looks at the experience of a South West London trauma unit. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients reviewed in fracture clinic and by the orthopaedic on-call team between 23 March to 23 April 2020 were included. Da

Containment measures established during the COVID-19 outbreak and its impact on lipid profile and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio.

OBJECTIVE: Almost all countries announced social restrictions and distancing measures which could unintentionally lead to a decline in admissions to hospital for acute disorders other than signs of pneumonia. We aimed to evaluate lipid profile, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and cardiovascular admissions to the coronary care unit (CCU) of a tertiary center in Turkey during the COVID-19 era and to compare these results with admissions in the same time interval of the previous year. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed CCU admissions due to new-onset atrial fibrillation, ST-

Recent Transmission of Tuberculosis - United States, 2011-2014.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that may result from recent transmission or from an infection acquired many years in the past; there is no diagnostic test to distinguish the two causes. Cases resulting from recent transmission are particularly concerning from a public health standpoint. To describe recent tuberculosis transmission in the United States, we used a field-validated plausible source-case method to estimate cases likely resulting from recent transmission during January 2011-September 2014. We classified cases as resulting from either limited or extensive recent transmission ba

Typhoid Fever in an inner city hospital: a 5-year retrospective review.

BACKGROUND: Typhoid is a leading cause of fever in returning travelers. The prevalence is highest in migrants visiting friends and relatives (VFR travelers) in the Indian subcontinent, where reports of resistance have been of concern. This study is a retrospective analysis of patients with typhoid, seen over a 5-year period, in a tertiary center that serves a large immigrant population. METHODS: Patients with blood cultures positive for Salmonella Typhi were identified between 2006 and 2010. Charts were reviewed for demographic data, travel history, symptoms and signs, basic laboratory result

Controlling tuberculosis in prisons against confinement conditions: a lost case? Experience from Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is recognised as a major public health problem in the prisons of sub-Saharan Africa. In Cameroon, the main prisons have created diagnostic and treatment units linked to the National Tuberculosis Programme (NTP). OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of routine TB control activities in a prison population by determining the prevalence of undetected pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). METHODS: In 2009, a PTB case-finding survey was undertaken at the Central Prison of Yaounde (CPY), Cameroon. All prisoners with cough of ≥1 week's duration were screened by sputum smear m
